I hope he's right, but....Yikes.
Wow. Kids got a big mouth. Hope he backs it up in 2011
Hmmmmm... I wonder how much of being the most physical, translates to wins?
sounds like this year's version of whatever last year's was. believe it when i see it.
LOL. We ain't even the most physical team in the state of Colorado yet we are going to be the most physical in the Pac 12? Hilarious.
The Pac might have a rep as being an Air-it-out league, but last year they had some physical bruising running backs (Gerhardt, Blount, etc)
A lot of those guys won't be there in 2011, but Hansen and our small backfield aren't going to scare anybody in the Pac.
He knows he won't have to because Hawk will put in little hawk.
I love the kids with Moxie. Way to go Hansen! Enough of the status quo...
Sounds like a football player to me. Coach, give him the keys and let him go. Please...
I like the moxie. I'm not sure I like a player making statements he won't have to back up, though. It would be different if Miller or Pericak had said it.
Whatever, though. Most important thing for our Buffs is that they're getting their swag back.
Hopefully the kid can turn into a Reesing type player for us.
This is a pretty bold prediction though. Wow.
10 Wins Baby!
Exactly. Why on earth would a member of this particular football team ever say such a thing?
It's one thing to be confident. But damn, this team (including the head coach) tends to describe themselves with some baffling superlatives at times.
Not the end of the world, give the kid credit for having some balls.
What station was it? I'd like to listen to this.
Someone else will need to answer your question.
I just wanted to be the first to say, "Welcome to AllBuffs. Now get me a beer!" :smile2:
I like the confidence. They did make me quite physically ill last year.
Most physical team in the Big 12...... So, the power running game is back.... I like his moxy but cu coaches and players should win first, then talk.
Coach Hawk is starting to rub off on this guy. All talk and no production. I'm sure if we get our butts kicked there will be plenty of excuses too. Don't talk **** until you can back it up on the field. I like the passion but save it for Saturdays in the fall.
We're going to be a physical team with a dink and dunk offense made up predominantly of screen and short passes and misdirection runs?
When we can at least average over 125 on the ground consistently, Ill believe we are becoming more physical. Geez I miss the days when we were averaging like 250 on the ground, 125 is pitiful and cupcake soft.
Here's the balance from Hawkins' last 2 seasons at Boise State:
2004: 2,758 rushing (596 attempts) / 3,154 passing (355 attempts)
2005: 2,632 rushing (560 attempts) / 2,892 passing (390 attempts)
He actually favors a very balanced attack that skews toward running the ball.
Looking at the same seasons at Cal while OC Eric Kiesau was coaching the WRs and being mentored by Tedford:
2004: 3,081 rushing (509 attempts) / 2,828 passing (331 attempts)
2005: 2,823 rushing (483 attempts) / 2,312 passing (321 attempts)
The 4 years at CU also show something interesting, I think:
2006: 2,070 rushing (471 attempts) / 1,422 passing (254 attempts)
2007: 1,875 rushing (485 attempts) / 3,046 passing (476 attempts)
2008: 1,494 rushing (439 attempts) / 2,328 passing (404 attempts)
2009: 1,044 rushing (379 attempts) / 2,717 passing (473 attempts)
I believe that there has been a major disconnect between what Hawkins (and Kiesau now) want to do versus what they are able to do. In 2006, we couldn't pass worth a lick and were forced into over 200 more rushing attempts than passing attempts. In 2007 and 2008, we ran a bit more than we passed but as the OL broke down in 2008 we simply did not do anything well the last half of the season. In 2009 we got down early and had to air it out (plus Kiesau panicked a bit early in the season as a 1st time coordinator) and we ended up throwing the ball nearly 100 more times over the course of the season than we ran it.
You can look at this as a trend that shows a change in offensive philosophy that has been bad for the program. But I would point back to what these guys did at their previous stops. People tend to repeat the things they have done that worked / made them successful. For that reason, I completely expect that with a veteran and talented offensive line in 2010 that we will see the Buff get back to playing the balanced football that Hawkins and Kiesau favor. I think we'll see our rushing and passing attempts come out about equal this year and we will be a physical team as Hansen talked about in his interview.
Excellent analysis. I want to believe we will run the ball more. While I think the kids on the O-line are talented, I do not think they are well coached. I will be pleasantly surprised if the O-line is a position of strength this year. I certainly hope they will come out with a physical blocking scheme, rather than constantly backpedaling. Last year we made every member of CSU's defense look like Ndamkong Suh!
What gives me hope for 2010 is that in week 12 of 2009, Ryan Miller made Ndamakong Suh look like a Lammie for most of the game.
Not the most appropriate simile. The Lammie's also beat us.
It was completely appropriate if you read what I was responding to.
Just as the awful OL play to start the season made Lammies look like Suh at the start of the season.... the improved line play made Suh look like Lammies at the end of the season.
(Those Lammies did lose their last 9 games in 2009. We were just that awful at the start of the year.)
I see what ur getting at Nik but we arent close to physical. We used to be the type of team that would fight Miami before the game. The oline and the whole damn roster would try to bust any and everyone in the mouth. They improved as a unit but have a long way to go.
They do have a long way to go. But let's not forget that Givens and Miller had such a high school rivalry that the two of them ended up in a fist fight nearly every time they saw each other in public. I've got a feeling about this OL and this team. I'll just leave it at that.
I hope ur right, I wasnt starting **** with you, just that we are not very physical. You do a great job on the board and the other mods do good too. What is this about Givens and Miller fighting? Meaning was it something they brought with them to college? I have never heard, knew, or read that?
