Hawkins isn't going anywhere for a while

I have been writing Bohn since last year telling him he needed to get rid of Hawkins...but you can tell that he's not going anywhere. Rumors abound, but to Bohn and Co. we are 3-2. Heck, that's a wining record! Why are the fans complaining? (you can almost hear him thinking).

This guy isn't going to be fired until AT LEAST we are eliminated from a bowl (and probably not until the season is over). If we DO go to a bowl, heaven help us, Hawk may not be fired at all. Firing Hawkins for Bohn is the same as saying he screwed up, and the guy just doesn't want to do that.

I would love to believe all the hype, but I am finally coming to the realization that they don't care what we think (and in fact, Bohn and Co. are starting to remind me a bit of Hawk...the more we clamor and threaten, the more they almost want to shove it in our face as a way of showing us who's really in charge).

We are in this boat for a while guys. Sad to say. Can we PLEASE hire some CU alums for the A.D. job? Bohn has no clue what tradition and bleeding Black and Gold means (and unless it concerns a donation from a wealthy alum, he doesn't care).

Bohn hates Hawk and wants Hawk gone. He was ready to fire Hawk last year

Bohn grew up in Boulder rooting for CU. And tried to fire Hawk after last season. Other than that, your post is spot on.

Really? Any proof for that statement? (sorry, specifically the part about trying to fire Hawk last year...not the growing up part)

Ya, do a search for threads in December of 2009. It's in several threads. It was when Hawk has a meeting with the chancellor or something meeting to keep him when Bohn was in Maui

He won't be fired until the end of the season. He could still save his job with 8 wins, which means he has to win all the remaining home games and 1 road game. Highly unlikely, but looking at our home schedule and at KU, it is not out of the realm of possibility. 7 wins with a road victory at KU and a loss at home is a big maybe. Lose every road game, regardless of home record he is gone. Sadly we just have to put up with it for a while longer.

Let's keep our fingers crossed (but how do you root against the Buffs? I find it impossible during games, no matter how much I tell myself it might be in our long term interests)

The prospect of us getting 8 nondescript wins scares the hell out of me. And yes, I think it's quite possible. I'm not optimistic or drinking the kool-aid, just fearful.

You don't have to root against the Buffs. As I have been saying, this season will take care of itself and Hawk will validate our "faith" in him.

8-4 with this schedule wouldn't come close to validating my faith in him. But what scares me is that it would validate faith in him to Bohn and the administration.

Okay...did the search (and I remember that time well, and the rumors that were circulating) I didn't see anything here other than the same sort of rumors we have now. Obviously, Bohn's a businessman who realizes you can't very well tell everyone what you are thinking (if you have lost confidence in the coach), which is why I didn't expect to find anything concrete...and I didn't.

I don't think it is worth an argument (after all...in the end I suppose it doesn't matter), but I see no evidence that Bohn feels as we do. In fact, circumstantial evidence would indicate that he probably doesn't. What seems stupid though, from a business standpoint, is staying the course right now if you don't think that he's going to turn things around and be "The Man" for a long time to come. There are TONS of reasons to let him go now and few arguments to let him stay. The money isn't as much of an issue as it was last year (since each year we owe him less) and the sooner the rebuilding process starts (and the sooner we can start selling recruits on the prospects of a new regime) the better. Attendance would pick up (or at least not drop off as much) as well.

So, why are we dithering? What is the point? Can you think of any legitimate arguments besides the money? Unless he thinks we are all wrong about Hawkins and he thinks he has a chance to turn things around for the long term. If he really thinks that, one would have to conclude that he doesn't understand the rudiments of football.

Quite possibly the most ill-informed, ignorant, and flat out incorrect thing ever posted on allbuffs. And that's saying something.

You're aware, I'm sure, that Bohn is a Boulder native, grew up selling cokes at Folsom, and had accepted a scholarship offer to play for Bill Mallory that was revoked when Chuck Fairbanks got the job, right? Bohn bleeds more black and gold than anybody else in the athletic department. ANYBODY ELSE. You're so incredibly off base with this statement it makes me question your motives.

Firing Hawk mid season does nothing for us, except cost cu money. Relax, he's gone at year end. The Colorado media has hammered CU every way it could over the last 20 years, but at least now it's to our advantage. Do you think The admin can ignore Woody Paige writing that Hakins is "finger painting" game plans? They can ignore the message board freaks, but not the traditional media.

They shouldn't risk it. He could stumble upon 7 or 8 wins and undeservedly keep his job. Do what should have been done last November.

so, just because he didn't e-mail you back and say "OK, you're right. After the THOUSAND's upon THOUSAND's of phone calls, e-mails, letters, and personal comments I have decided to solely respond back to you that we will be firing Hawk as proof that I give a **** about CU, the University that pays my salary and my career is at stake for. I know that by informing you, Mr 1989Buff, that our handling of the situation can only proceed with success, please inform me as what my next step should be so that I can appease your sense of entitlement in the athletic department's affairs." you feel that the CU AD is just trying to "shove it in our face", seriously? get a clue.

You feel overlooked in favor of wealthy donors? welcome to reality.

We all want CU to WIN. Mostly we all realize that it will need to be someone else besides Hawk to do it. Bohn has ALOT on his plate and I'm sure his job would be easier if Hawkins would do his job and field a competitive/entertaining team. The AD has to time the decision so that the current players are not left in the lurch. Maybe that is this week, maybe next, maybe the end of the year, we don't know; but it isn't because he wants to "shove anything in our faces".

I have very little doubt that Hawkins is done for... my main concern remains if Bohn can actually pick the right guy to replace him.

I think he's gone even at 8-4, but I'm not too confident about it. Like BB, I'm worried about his replacement, but at this point even Calhoun would be a massive improvement over Hawk. Hopefully Bohn can think a little more outside the box than that, though.

Agree Boulder Buff and White Rabbit. I am worried what will happen if the wrong coach is hired. Notre Dame has hired three bad coaches in a row and the jury is still out on #4. We have to find the right guy.

    Just not soon enough.

If they didn't fire him at the end of last year it is going to take more than two pathetic performances in a year where he has so far a 3-2 record.

Speculation is that if he gets 8 wins he stays, I'm not sure that even 8 would save him. I think that Benson told Bohn in effect "We can't fire him this year for political reasons but next year after the election season is over go ahead and do what you need to do.

I don't think that we even need to worry about winning 8. We don't have any more CSUs on the schedule, we don't have another Hawaii coming in after spending 11 days in hotel rooms and traveling. To win 8 we would have to win all the home games plus one road game. Considering that we have won 2 road games in all the time Hawk has been here the idea of winning a road game is questionable, especially considering that we have to go to Norman and to Lincoln, the one we might have a chance at is KU but I wouldn't bet my house on that one. That is all assuming that we go undefeated at home. Both Baylor and Tech can put up bunches of points and we, well, we don't. Unless we play a perfect defensive game we lose at least one of those games if not both. Iowa State and Kansas State are both weak but when has that ever stopped a Hawkins team from laying an egg.

Best bet, we end up 6-6, go to a very minor bowl, lose and Hawkins is replaced by someone that Bohn has already selected for the job, potentially Hawkins even coaches the bowl with everyone knowing he is a lame duck including him.

Did I say I ever expected a reply? I just added my name to the list of others calling for the same thing. More on this when I answer the other gentleman's post.

So, when I read his comments about what his goals are for the program (mediocre at best..."be competitive", "finish in the upper tier of the league" "go to a bowl game" etc.) THAT is supposed to make me think he understands what the standards should be?

Look...you seem to think that this guy's history is what makes him a good fit for their job, I think it is his outlook and his belief in what this program is supposed to be. If your goals are to improve upon the Fairbanks years (or get us back to the Mallory ones) you are not the guy for this job.

Now, I was excited when Bohn came in, because I thought he was an upgrade over his predecessor. But have you seen how we have done on picking coaches? How is the woman's basketball program doing (one of the jewels of the program for so long)? How is the football team doing?

Now, perhaps you might say he hasn't had enough time (to which I am sympathetic), but then SHOW ME SOMETHING! Show me that we have a standard for performance that must be met. Don't give away contracts that lock us into coaches who have losing records when you ink the deals. C'mon man. How do you judge a guy? Cause he sold cokes at Folsom as a kid or because he says "You have a losing record, you haven't looked good in your first two years, our goals for this program require you to meet a higher standard than this, here's a deal that will pay you a ton if you turn things around, but that allows us to fire you easily if you don't"? One shows a committment to winning, one shows a tolerance for underperformance, lack of improvement and ineptitude.

You needn't question my motives...my motives are "RTD". What has Bohn showed you that makes you think he's cognizant of what the standards for the Buffs should be? I see no evidence, and yet you call me (well, all those names). Hawkins is the problem at first. But after that, the A.D. is the guy to blame. If he allows a coiach to hurt the program long enough, what is one to think of his commitment to the long-term health of CU's athletics? Why isn't he saying that this is intolerable and we won't stand for this level of performance?

A guy who "bleeds black and gold" should be showing it. Have I just missed a display of his frustration or an outburst suggesting that the current situation is intolerable? Point it out if I have. I don't live in Boulder anymore, so may miss some of the local news that Isn't online that you may have access to. But even the public comments from Bohn about his standards for the program have me saying "Huh?" His "goals" are the things we should settle for in bad years, not aspire for in good ones. Conference championships should be the goal, and he should say so. Then he should market that to the alums and tell them what they can do to make that a reality. Who wants to buy into the idea of "being competitive" or "going to a bowl"?

They are waiting until after the season so they don't lose a bunch of kids and hurt the APR scores for the team (and lose more scholly's in the process.) I don't like it, but the rules Bohn laid down included being competitive in every game and not getting blown out in games. The two losses are both deal killers. Hawk in gone after the season.

But WHY are they a mess? This was my point in the thread. This is no longer Hawkins' fault. What coach in his position wouldn't stay if allowed to?
Look, I assume many of you are business owners (as am I), how much slack do you cut those who allow such continuing embarrassing performances?

But , everyone here seems to think it's a moot point because Hawk is gone regardless of the rest of the season. What can I say, hope you are right. But I think Bohn should be fired if Hawkins is retained after this season.

Let's hold this debate off until around the KU game. I did predict a 8-4 season for the Buffs and I am right on the mark. The road losing streak will be gone eventually (hopefully this year). We still have games at OU and NU where it might be wise to not watch the game but other than that, 8-4 is still doable.
