If we were to land 1 5* player this year

    What position would you want?

QB: I like our guys and they have a lot of heart, but with this being Cody's JR year it'd be nice to bring in a guy and teach him the game so he can take over and lead for 2-4 years.

TE: We have talent here, but if we could get a TE that is essentially a downfield blocker with great speed and height with good hands (ala Graham) it'd be a great compliment to our attack. We will have 2 experience TEs after this year, Deehan will be a Jr and DeVaughn will be a So.

DT: Nuckols will hopefully be a member of the team in January, but we don't have much depth at DT right now. Kaynor will be the only scholly DT leaving (Sale is a Sr too, but I don't think he's a scholarship player). We will have Bonsu, Cunningham, Pericack and (hopefully) Nuckols. Not bad, but competition at this spot would be incredible.

DE: We have Kasa, but he has 0 PT right now. Herrod, Obi and Forrest (Frosh) are the others I recognize off the roster; that's not to say the others aren't solid players though.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd love to have a 5* player on the DL. We have guys there, but I want a DT like Dorsey (wishful thinking on anyone's part). The CBs lose a lot of really good talent, but I think Brown has a good hold of things. The LBs should be a strong unit for the foreseeable future. I don't think QB is as much of an issue as people make it out to be at the cfb level (although a Detmer type on the team would be awesome). We should be stacked at RB. The OL has some depth, even though we lost a couple of guys. We get a double team on the DL and our LBs eat up opposing RBs for lunch.

As a whole, however, I think the DL has underperformed since Hawkins got here. Wright was an exception and TRG and his counterpart Nicolas were solid contributors, but weren't game changers. I want this one to fall squarely on the Bandison's shoulders and not second guess ourselves with the talent we do have. Having a DT or DE that is as naturally gifted as Kasa is and is familiar with the position would be a great thing to have.

I would love CB, WR, or DT.

I prefer it to be plural and have the class dominated by 5s.

That is not asking for too much is it?

Stars aren't important on this board, we need to concentrate on as many one and two stars as we can get. They are all diamonds in the rough you know.

Now if you want my opinion, I'd like to see us have a Rivals top 5 class the next ten years running. I just don't see how the "guru's" can be that irresponsible and uninformed in their assessment of talent. I sure don't see how having a roster that was teeming with 4 and 5 star players could hurt this program. I think the idea that all we need are the leftover one and two star kids is 100 proof kool-aid that we console ourselves with when we keep getting beat out on 4 and 5 star talent. (There's a Sunday morning rant for you :pissed:)

If I can't have my wish list I'd go 5* defensive lineman first. We need to start attracting some major talent at the core of the line and turn it into an annual trend.

A Matt Barkley type 5* QB wouldn't be a bad thing either and that would be my second choice. I'm big on QB's that strike fear in the heart of a defense every time they step up behind center

I'd like to get that 5 star DT and then another one, and then a DE. As they say, it all starts up front, and while the staff has done great with the OL, the DL needs more guys.

    QB.

Most important position and landing a blue chipper has a hugely positive impact on your overall recruiting.

Good point, but he has to live up to the hype, very few do.

    1. QB
    2. DT

A five star QB would boost recruiting big time. And we need a big run stuffer in the middle to make the 3-4 D work for us.

Funny to look back at the 5* pro-style qbs since 2002.

    Ben Olson (bust)
Trent Edwards (okay but team sucked)
    Kyle Wright (bust)
    Rhett Bomar (bust)
    Anthony Morelli (bust)
Chad Henne (mediocre - 0 - 4 vs Ohio St)
    Ryan Perrilloux (bust)
    Tim Tebow

Of the 8 5*s, I would say that only Tebow is a game changer.

    Sanchez (good)
    Stafford (good)
Mustain (rode bench for last 2 years)
    4 Rings Clausen (bitch)
    Ryan Mallet (transferred)

If you look at which QBs were drafted, especially in the early rounds, the 5* guys really dominate. In a lot of cases, there are reasons why some of them underperform in college that have nothing to do with their talent. No position is a sure thing, but the QBs highly rated QBs fare pretty well.

I'm not so sure about that. I'm not going to look them all up, but I think some of these guys were not heavily recruited:

    Matt Ryan
    Joe Flacco
    Kevin O'Connell
    Kevin Kolb
    Jay Cutler
    Tavaris Jackson
    Alex Smith
    Charlie Frye
    Andrew Walter
    Philip Rivers
    Roethlisberger
    Losman
    Schaub
    Leftwich
    Carr

    Jus sayin...

If you have a chance at a 5 star QB, you go after him every time. Even if he doesn't pan out, that pickup boosts your classes profile with other potential recruits.

The good outweighs the bad every time imo.

    CB

Great coverage will improve the pass rush; make the qb hold the ball a little longer.

I agree with this, however, if he doesn't develop into a big time QB in our program then it was OUR fault, not his that he sucked. Some guys pan out and some guys don't. You need a QB that fits your system more than you need a great QB, especially when you lack the WRs and TEs to help them out. I don't see a 5* guy on either line going to a team just because of a QB. Skill guys, however, would.

Josh Freeman was an NFL prototypical QB that wasn't very good at the CFB level. He had a terrible coach and there wasn't much talent to work with, but he didn't win games on his shoulders. This was a guy that also was drafted early in the 1st. KSU is not going to land a big time QB again for a while.

You need the talent to get the top QBs, but it also helps to have good/great team as well so they don't have to have all of the pressure on their shoulders. A chicken and the egg problem.

If we have multiple 800+ yard receivers this year then hopefully everything will line up. Hawkins is coaching WRs this year so I'm going to put this on him and Kiseau.

Getting a five star QB is a program changer. You can build a program around that kid. No other position holds that much importance imo.

If he doesn't pan out, I agree with you. The blame goes squarely on the coaching staff.

Freeman was a four star kid. I think Mustain, Tebow, and Stafford were the five star kids.

Don't get me wrong here. I'm not a big believer in the Star System. But it's pretty much common sense that those three QB's were the top of their class coming out of HS.

Maybe true, but I'd argue that Edwards, Wright, Morelli, and Henne were all better college QB's than anyone CU has had sine Koy. I know your list is only pro-style QBs, but Vince Young was a 5 star that lived up to his rating (in college at least).

I'd still take a 5 star QB every year.

And a good pash rush can help the coverage.

    5 star DT/DE

I'm comfortable with Clark Evans and Nick Hirschman and won't get greedy beyond that. I'd prefer a 5 star on OL or DL. DL for obvious reasons to come in and make an impact where our depth is largely untested. OL because of our usual attrition at the position.

    That's not saying much.

If we're just talking about 1 impact player, I would want my 5 star to be an athlete. Skills are too hard to project.

However, valdezj makes a good point. 1 5 star QB can turn around an entire class, especially if he commits early. For that reason, I would probably agree with valdezj.

Cu won't get a 5 star qb here so we don't have to worry about it.
