from the Memphis AD on expansion
Interesting perspectives there. It's obvious the Big 10 is a few months away from detonating a bombshell on college athletics. I just hope we can get to our safe harbor quickly.
My fear is that the pac-10 might not be bold enough..and be stuck at 12..while the SEC and Big 10 super explode.
Fair enough, Super. Let's assume the SEC (UT, A&M, OU, OSU) and Big 10 (NU, MU plus east coast options Cuse, Pitt and Rutgers)) go Supernova and take a chunk of the Big 12 with them to do it. Let's also assume that's the effective end of the Big 12. At that point, the Pac MUST act in a large way, IMO. Looking just at athletics (I realize academics means a lot to the Pac), I would add the following:
-- New Mexico
-- Colorado State
-- Boise State
In reality, only CU, UU and UNM are logical choices that aren't huge reaches in one way or another. However, if this simply becomes a game of numbers and positioning for the future of the BCS or whatever is next, this would be my list.
I can't speak for utah, NM, CS Uwe or Boise, but one of my cousins who went to Knu back in the 80's and told me on more than one occasion that academics were not real high on their priority list, especially if you were a SA.
In that scenario, I would replace CSU and Boise State with Hawaii and UNLV.
The Pac-16 would then own all the flagship schools out west, and the fastest growing markets.
Air Force and Texas Tech would probably be considered before CSU or Boise, and maybe they would even accept BYU at that point, who knows.
Adding UNLV over CSU/Boise would immediately pay dividends in basketball distributions.
Yeah but that Travel with Hawaii would suck.
suck, as in, not wanting to come back?
Suck as..costing too much.
PAC would take any remaining Big 12 schools before they even considered CS Ewe, NM, or any other Mountain West team with exception of Air Force. Even if they could not get enough of the remaining Big 12 teams they would look at many options like Fresno State, before ever getting to a CS Ewe
Honestly, I doubt that the Pac-10 takes Frenso State before CSU due to the academics part. Don't be shocked if CSU is a BCS school after the big realignment.
There's no way the Pac-10 would have any interest in inviting CSU. None.
Agreed. I think the Pac 10 is much less desperate to expand than people here want to believe. They'll only expand if it makes sense for the existing schools. Adding schools such as Fresno or CSU would do nothing to help the existing schools. In fact it would be a net loss since these schools would get more money from the Pac 10 than they'd bring in.
I still think the Big 12 is looking at going to 14.
Maybe...who do you think they'll add?
That might be doable, as long as they don't lose anybody. If Mizzou, Colorado or UNL take off as rumored, the conference is going to struggle to stay at XII, much less expand to XIV...
If they did add two, my guess would probably be TCU and somebody from the UNM, SMU, BYU group. I really don't understand what the conference gains from doing that, though...
Possible Big 12 expansion targets would be BYU, UNM, Tulane & Memphis. Any one of them would make a decent addition to the conference.
CSU ranks somewhere between Chico State and Loveland High School on the Pac 10s wishlist. Not happening.
If the Big 12 doesn't lose anybody and decides to expand, I would certainly think that Utah would be a likely candidate.
No way, Loveland H.S. is much more appealing....
Good point. I guess I was kind of assuming Utah was already gone. If we're talking about a scenario where the Big 12 expands and the Pac 10 doesn't, then certainly Utah would be at the top of the list.
But would the Utes want to join (or any other school for that matter) knowing the braindamage Texass has caused the other 11 teams? There could be a few schools thinking if Texass leaves we would be happy to take their place.
Utah or BYU or anybody would jump to the Big 12 in a moments notice.
$8 to $10 million in conference distributions, national broadcasting, and a guaranteed BCS slot
$3 to 5 million in conference distributions, spotty regional broadcasting, and only a perfect season to get a BCS slot.
I don't think any the "have-nots" give a crap about Texas throwing their weight around or not, they just want to bank more cash and exposure
Those are gripes for schools that are already "haves".
Other than a great road trip, the Green Wave brings nada to the Big 12 or any other BCS conference. TCU, Houston... even UTEP would be better than Tulane.
who says they wont make a play for tcu and utah
The PAC would rather remain smaller than add CSU. CSU adds nothing in terms of TV market and does not exactly travel well. They had a hard time averaging 30k when they were winning, recently with losing records they have slipped down below 25k even with ticket prices that are significantly lower than virtually all BCS schools.
I could see Air Force as a target for the PAC, they travel very well with the strong military presence throughout the current PAC10 footprint. Air Force also has appeal nationally on TV. They are not a research school but have a premium reputation academically as well.
Boise could be a target with their recent success, their strong growth in ticket sales, their TV recognition, and the fast growing population of the Boise area.
If the superconfence realignment comes to pass, I think that the PAC will be able to pluck some Big XII schools before having to resort to schools that haven't shown an abiltity to function at the major conference level financially yet.
Academic integrity and a relatively large media market. Oh, and some killer roadies.
Don't kid yourself, LSU dominates the New Orleans market.
fify. I've seen roaches on the Gulf Coast that could double for turtles...they get that big down there.
I lived in New Orleans. They are big, but not nearly as big as those Madagascar roaches. There were all kinds of crazy ass bugs though. My favorites were the stinging caterpillars and the stick bugs. If you stepped really hard on one end of the caterpillar, the other end would explode and shoot goo several feet. And, if you got a twig and poked at a stick bug a little bit, it'd shoot this weird black stuff at you.
