After reading a couple of threads over there, I feel like stamping "FACT" on everything I say, because I'm the ****ing greatest! FACT.

    quote:
I can tell you that it is a FACT that Les is interested in the CU job and his people have been communicating/negotiating with the CU people. That is a fact. Say it's stupid all you want, but it is happening.

    quote;
Like I said earlier...CU needs to hire someone quickly and they are WAY too far apart right now with what Miles desires.

CU is very close to walking away from the table (Miles, too) because both sides realize that it probably can't happen. The only point is that he IS/WAS interested and DID engage in talks with CU.

Intersting note that the guy references the fact he spoke with someone who was actually IN THE ROOM for the discussions. Of course, it is not surprising that he backed that up with the fact that CU wants to move quickly and prolly would not be able to come to terms that quickly.

    Thanks for the link ITB.

It would seem something is going to happen this week if it going to happen at all.

LSUpimp is funny: "He is NOT taking that vastly inferior position".

followed by: "I'm a huge CU guy."

Hiring Miles seems like a pipe dream, and I'd be ecstatic if CU were able to pull that off. That said, because of the last 5 years, I refuse to get my hopes up.

    $500,000+

I would bet CU is not too far from $2.5 but I bet Miles is at $3. (He's making $3.75 mil annually, now)

I'll assume we could pay the new head coach $2 million/year on our budget. If we could land Miles for $2.75m-$3m per year, I'd sure as hell hope that a booster would step up (COUGH boosters on the Search Committee COUGH) and meet the difference. Les Miles is someone that would galvanize the entire fan base, the donor base, + scare the Pac 12 -- and in my educated opinion, would be worth an extra $750k-$1m per year over, say, a Troy Calhoun.

I guess what I'm saying is that if Les Miles is actually interested in the CU job, we need to make sure that the $$$ is there so that the $$$ doesn't become THE factor in him turning the job down.

That is not enough to stop this from happening IMO. If we can find the money to buyout Barney and Hawk $10mill+ combined we should be able to close such a small gap. If this Admin is as serious as they say they are in competing at the highest level.

Pretty sure the school had to borrow money to buyout Barnett. ($3 million)

And every dollar over $2 million that goes to a coach like Miles means a dollar taken away from the assistant coaching pool. Give Miles that $500,000 and kiss any quality assistant coaches goodbye.

I wouldn't be so sure. We've had a lot of great assistants at CU, even under Hawkins.

I would imagine that Miles would also have facilities upgrades in his contract as well.

Best case senario for CU would be for Miles to agree to a huge performance based contract. If CU starts winning again, money would not be much of a issue.

It is too small a number IMO to walk away from the table. CU sold 800 tickets overnight after firing Hawk imagine how many tickets will be sold if they hire Miles? I would buy 4 sets of season tickets.

Miles would be nuts to leave and we can't afford him unless there has been a seismic shift we're unaware of.

    Grimes? Brown? Cabral?

CU can get good assistants paying in the $200k-$300k range. No reason to go to SEC type assistant salaries right away. Give raises to retain them if necessary, though. As the Pac-12 media contract kicks in, we'll be able to afford to do that.

I would hope/expect part of the process is going after the noted big donors (including those not on the committee) and having a nice "what-if" discussion. Really would like to know what the real gap is...

As others have said, if we can produce a winner then the money should less of an issue in the future.

I somewhat remember something about how the school is going to start kicking in some serious money into the athletic department a few months back. Is that still true?

Halt construction on the hoops facility to pay the assistants if necessary, didn't we just get waxed by Harvard? Joking of course. Actually I think this is one of the main reasons we put big boosters on the search committee - let them talk to Miles, or whoever else is interested directly to motivate them to open the pocketbooks if we need to make a play ($$) for a big time coach. It's easier, and probably more effective, than Bohn having to go back to these guys to ask for more money, and candidates can find out right away if CU's boosters are willing to step up.

And we lost 2 of the 3 to other schools. Cabral is a fixture at the school.

I wouldn't doubt it GoBuffs. I think they finally realized how important football is to the schools success. We have some rich boosters, couldn't they donate for the assistant salaries and a couple could donate to the Les Miles fund to get him. It all goes back to the basic economic principal of you have to spend money to make money. You spend $3 million a year on a coach, your team wins, more TV exposure, more ticket sales, etc...all make you more money. I have a hard time beliving this AD is so poor that we can't afford a quality coach.

Yes. Not sure if the Regents getting that athletics sub-committee helped, hurt or didn't matter on that one. I could see it effecting it though.

Which is why I said the thing about having the resources from 2012 onward to start giving raises and matching / beating offers for assistants we'd like to keep. But there are a lot of good coaches out there.

The only coaching change at LSU will be the firing of Gary Crowton. There is no way Miles can keep him on the staff any longer. It is reported he is a top candidate for the ULL job. Poor Ragin Cajuns - the guy is a moron.
