    CU, Bohn Name Search Committee For New Head Football Coach

    BOULDER — The search committee has been named to help determine who will become the 24th full-time head football coach in University of Colorado history, school officials released Wednesday.

    CU’s Faculty Athletics Representative and long-time faculty member, Dr. David Clough, will chair the seven-person committee. A professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering, he has been on the faculty since 1975 and has served as Colorado’s FAR to the Big 12 Conference since 2005, a role in which he will continue when the Buffaloes join the Pacific-12 Conference next July 1.

    Joining Clough on the committee are:

    • Dr. Robert Boswell, Interim University of Colorado Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Community Engagement; Professor, Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology
    • Dr. Elizabeth Bradley, Chair, Boulder Faculty Assembly Intercollegiate Athletics Committee and Professor, University of Colorado Department of Computer Science;
    • Dave Hoover, Chairman & CEO/Ball Corporation;
    • Roger Parker (’83, Business-Mineral Land Management), Chairman & CEO/Recovery Energy, Inc.;
    • Ric Porreca, Senior University of Colorado Vice Chancellor & Chief Financial Officer; and
    • George Solich (‘83, Business-Mineral Land Management), President & CEO/Cordillera Energy Partners III, LLC.

    The committee is charged with seeking candidates to replace Dan Hawkins, who was relieved of his duties after nearly five seasons on November 9. Committee members will study and evaluate detailed information on candidates, and recommend one or more to CU athletic director Mike Bohn, who as the “hiring authority” is not a member of committee per university policy. The committee will also participate in interviews with candidates.

    “I am pleased to be able to serve the University as the chair of the search committee for our head football coach and look forward to collaborating with this group of outstanding individuals,” Clough said. “I am certain the committee will endeavor to represent the diverse interests of University's students, faculty, staff and administration and the public in the course and outcome of the search.

    “We will strive to present to the director of athletics and the chancellor recommendations that will lead to the hiring of the best possible candidate for head coach, an individual who will lead the program to success in the coming years in a way that will engender pride in all supporters of the University of Colorado.”

    The committee will meet for the first time later this week.

    Really, really not liking the fact that there is no representation of the football program on there at all. I do wonder about the "university policy" mentioned re: Bohn not being a committee member. Does that policy say anything else about the make-up of committees like these? Right now it looks like the faculty/athletics liasion (logical), 3 more faculty reps and 3 outside reps (I'm guessing donors?).

    Hoover, Parker and Solich can all write big checks. No accident that they're on the committee. If they're happy with the choice (and involved), that is a good thing for CU athletics.

    Yep - just like everything else in my life, my football program has turned political. Academic minds & donors. Oh, to be a fly on the wall....

    I saw that, and I wasn't trying to bag on him. I really do think it's logical that somebody in his liasion role would be on this committee...

    This is pure specualtion on my part but here is my guess on how it went down:

    MB and the English Patient got together to put together the committee. They could not agree, BB said Clough will be chair as Faculty Athletic Rep., MB you pick three and English Patient you pick three. Done deal.

    MB picked three huge donors, the English Patient went with three of his kind.

    Yep. At the end of the day, when this committee is making its recommendations, the bottom line will be: "Money talks and bull**** walks."

    I'm optimistic with the makeup of this group. I would have preferred that there was a member with ties to the football program, but it looks to be a decent group. The big donors are encouraging (wasn't Solich the guy behind the 50 for $50 million club idea?)

    I can vouch for Bob Boswell. His lab is pretty much next door to mine and although he isn't a die hard football fan (to my knowledge at least) I think he can be trusted to make a good decision.

    I am confused. Is there any substance to this committee or is this just a feel good / get people involved / I care about your opinion kind of thing. I am also confused by the mention of the word policy. Is this new policy? Or was policy just never followed before when hiring a football coach?

    My guess is that there is not much substance to this thing, i.e., Bohn can hire whomever he wants to hire. Until we learn otherwise, I would not get too worked up about who is and who is not on the committee.

    I worked in Boswell's lab as an undergrad 10 yrs ago. He may have changed, but the only reason I can figure he's on the committee is that he one of the 3 non-football playing black people at CU (also probably why he's the "diversity coordinator"). From what I remember of him, I doubt he'll have much of an opinion and most likely will differ to those that do...
