Nothing on the local news about an all out brawl?
Thata great! However, how did you feel after hawk was done talking? :sad1:Mac was great. I'm not a religious guy, but it was inspiring to hear someone who is talk about being on his knees praying after starting his fourth season 0-4 to run his CU record to 14-34. He talked about how the passage from Job came to him: "Stand up like a man." Then from that point forward (after the speech about the 6 guys mentioned earlier), his teams won 79% of their games.
By the time he was done talking, I was ready to take the field for CU and kick some Husker butt.
What else did you expect from Mac - like he's going to rag on Hawkins?Mac was great. Thanks for the summaries guys.
Sometimes I wonder if Hawkins understands PR at all. There is no reason to bring up how many games have been close. There is no reason to re-visit "_ number of plays away from a bowl game". Even in a room full of diehard fans, it does nothing to further his cause.
Hawk's not a PR guy. One of the big disconnects he has is that he doesn't speak in sound bytes. A lot of times, if you parse out what he's saying and take it out of context... it sounds like an excuse or weird or disconnected or whatever. But in context, he's usually making a very valid point.
He spoke today about how CU football has been playing a lot of close games. (That's true.) He then said that in close games, a few plays may be the difference between a win or a loss. (That's also true.)
He took those 2 true statements as the basis for his offseason motivational theme with his staff and his players. He put together a reel of 24 key plays that could have made for a completely different season if CU had executed them properly. He showed it to his staff and his players. And now the message he keeps repeating to everyone when he sees them is: what have you done to get 3 plays better today? Be it working out, watching film, etc.
Now, that may not read well on a message board or in the press, but it makes a lot of sense from the standpoint of what you tell your team if you are Hawk. You build their confidence by stressing how close they are and getting them to focus on improving. Trying to get each individual to be driven to improve so that he can help the team get over the hump next year.
Also, he talked some about how he has taken the Coach Mac philosophy to heart by asking 3 very important questions: Where are we? Where do we want to get? How are we going to get there? He said he had a frank discussion with his staff laying that out.
Next, he went into the basic recruiting pitch he uses to sell CU. He said that when you look at the factors of a great place to live, a great educational opportunity and a tradition of football excellence... that he believes CU is 2nd to none. Added to that, he talked about how important it is to be genuine and how all of his coaches are good men that parents and recruits trust because it's honest when they talk about caring that the prospect not only develops as a football player, but also gets his degree while developing as a man.
Finally, it was obvious that the number of off sides and delay of game penalties last season really pissed him off. He must have said 3 times (once when it didn't fit and was an off-the-cuff remark) how guys need to know the snap count, calls need to be made correctly and in the right order, and people need to fire off the ball on time (not early or late).

All in all, I thought it was a very grounded and good speech by Hawk. He expressed confidence, humility and appreciation. Nothing earth shattering and he repeated a few of his favorite Hawkisms ("little things", "keep pounding and all of a sudden the concrete cracks", etc.). But I can honestly say I came away from his speech feeling better about him and the state of the program than I did before he spoke.
HeY! YOU CALLING MAC A LIAR? :smile:What else did you expect from Mac - like he's going to rag on Hawkins?
2 programs going in opposite directions.

Here is my issue...what is Hawkins doing to get the plays in from the side lines in a timely fashion. This has been an issue since his first year. I have seen this team take a delay of game after a time out. How many Time Outs have been wasted because the play does not get in or we take a 5 yard lost. Yes the players have to quit making stupid mistakes but the Hawkins has to be sure the coaches fix theirs. After 4 years lets hope we see the plays get in quicker.
I will feel better when it shows itself on the field. We've heard this same routine for 4 years now. There has to be some urgency to winning now. Sounds like the rah-rah stuff is gone but the state of the program hasn't changed after one speech. Anyway, hopefully everyone is ready for spring other than bonsu being out and everyone is ready for game 1. Need a fast start.
I don't disagree. We were a sloppy, disorganized team. It was inexcusable.
With almost all the starters returning on offense, Kiesau no longer being a rookie OC, and Hawkins making it a point of emphasis... one would hope we improve by a wide margin.
And hope is all that's keeping me going as a Buffs fan these days, because there certainly isn't a track record or trend that indicates I can count on improvement.
Did say that 50% of there games have been decided by seven points or less and 20% of Big 12 games have also been decided by less than a touchdown. Instead of the 10 plays away from a good season he changed his tune to say it was actually 24 plays. I think he knows his ass is on the line and is taking the "all business aproach". He was very thankful of the fans. Mentioned this quite a few times.
Well, BnG, I've been told that Hawkins' intensity level is sky high. He, apparently, ripped into a kid for screwing up "a little thing." I also hear the players are loving it (the intensity) and are fully behind Hawkins. FWIW.I understand the hope thing...I believe that Hawkins is throwing out things that he thinks people may want to hear. Who knows.
He ripped a kid for missing a "little thing". WTF? I'm sorry, but I have a hard time believing that this goof has suddenly found the intensity button and is pushing it. Hawkins is what he is - a sh!tty football coach. We're stuck with him for another season. I plan on being absolutely obliterated before I go to the games this year. Liquid anesthetic is the best form of pain killer.
