Glad Boyle landed a second player, I was starting to worry. Before I say what I am about to say and get flamed. I should say I am pleased that Boyle has been doing such a GREAT job. However, as we look around the PAC, CU is being out recruited by: 1. Arizona, USC, Utah and believe it or not Oregon State. UCLA could land a significantly better class as well, considering all the recruits they are still in the mix on. CU just isn't in the mix on enough of the top players this year. Finishing 5th and likely 6th in recruiting may be a step up from what us Buff fans are used to, but it isn't a way to keep CU near the top in the PAC-12 standings. I appreciate Boyle and his staff, but lets keep doing better! Go Buffs.

Re: '14 NH PF Tory Miller (Verbal to COLORADO)

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. We need athletic bigs like him to do some of the dirty work. I will take an athletic 6'8" player over a 7' stiff every time. Those athletic 7 footers are just way to hard to find.

    **** it, I'll wade in.

You're not 100% wrong. CU does need to up its recruiting a little if we're going to take the next step. The simple fact is that Tad needs to land a 5* or two over the next 2-3 years. It's the natural progression. I'm not bashing Tad's recruiting because, like you said, he's killing it. But the Buffs got a little lucky - we came in to the Pac when they were down. Teams like the last two years CU squads were good, but in "normal" Pac years (like we're anticipating seeing this year), they wouldn't be good enough to even sniff the P12 title. We've made a good first step, but it's time to take the next leap. We need to land some guys like Boatwright, Hemsley, De'Ron Davis, etc. over the next two years. You know Arizona is going to be pulling in top 5 classes. UCLA should be landing top 20 classes (which Alford will find a way to waste). USC has a recruiting powerhouse of a staff and one of the best pitches in the game right now ("you get to play fun fast paced lob-filled basketball in a city with some of the most gorgeous women in the world and amazing weather"). It's going to get tougher.

The part where your post went off the rails was where you said that Utah and OSU have better classes than us this year. Chapman is a great get for Utah, and I like Kuzma, but I'd take our class over them easily and OSU is, well, underwhelming (and I'm not really sure why you singled them out).

I will say that the fewer available scholarships you have, the more specific you have to be in addressing your immediate needs. CU did that with this class as well as kept a streak of getting a premiere in-state recruit to stay home. With only one spot available but a presumed two due to the expected attrition or early NBA declaration that college hoops teams are subject to, I think this worked nicely and these pieces will maintain a great team in a couple of years.

You also have to realize that Boyle is getting players that will stay for a couple years generally. U of A and UCLA may get better classes but many of those players leave after one year.

Citizen Kane - did you mean "Oregon"? Oregon State brought in a good class 4 years ago (we'll see if Robinson can do anything with it this year), but there hasn't been a lot to like since then. Stanford has also fallen off. Washington may have fallen off, too, but in that case I think it's a good thing - Romar does better with 3* guys than he does with 5* guys. USC has to recover quite a bit because they've had 2 or 3 bad classes in a row with a ton of attrition. Cal's typical class is 1 guy I'm jealous of, 1 guy I like, and 1 guy I scratch my head about. ASU is going to bring in its best class in a long time and could be coming up. Utah is improving but it's the type of class that Bzdelik brought to CU and will not get them above NIT level. Washington State is a hot mess right now after losing Tony Bennett to UVA and making a bad hire with Ken Bone.

CU keeps signing Top 100 players along with guys who fit the system. There's certainly a level above that, but the program is not lacking for talent in the least.

I think landing a 5 star kid or two would be nice, but don't see it as any type of requirement if Boyle wants to elevate the program. Louisville won a National Championship largely on 4 star recruits (Benahan being the exception I believe). Kansas and Michigan got to a National Title game namely on 4 star recruits

To me, the next step is consistently getting 4 star kids to come to the program. There will always be the under the radar player that Boyle gets that won't be that highly ranked, but you would like to land mainly 4 star or better recruits.

CU's team next year is likely to have Josh Scott, Xavier Johnson, Dom Collier as unanimous 4 star recruits by ESPN/Rivals/Scout, with Fletcher close to earning that distinction. So, that's 4 players. More then CU has ever had I believe. Still, you'd like to see that number doubled within the next couple years. You do that, and the getting 5 star recruits will take care of itself.

Even Boatwright, Hemsley and even Davis are ranked as 4 star recruits by ESPN/Rivals/Scout, I believe. All would be great additions to the roster, even if none move up to a 5 star ranking

Wazzu losing Bennett was a disaster. Coug fans were devastated. Really, really hurt Pac basketball.

Why are people concerned about recruiting? Jesus Christ people. Tad Boyle knows what he wants and how he wants it. There's a reason we got XJ/Dinwiddie and Collier/Miller, Tad likes relationships. Look at Kentucky last year. No chemistry. I'll take chemistry over a 5* any day.

    :rofl2:

Yeah. It would suck to have a roster of 13 guys who were all 4* or 5* recruits. No way Tad could win with that.

And here's the Kentucky team that won the title in 2011-2012...

    Anthony Davis (Class of 2011) - 5* (Rivals: #2 Overall, #1 PF)
    Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Class of 2011) - 5* (Rivals: #3 Overall, #1 SF)
    Marquis Teague (Class of 2011) - 5* (Rivals: #5 Overall, #1 PG)
    Terrence Jones (Class of 2010) - 5* (Rivals: #13 Overall, #4 PF)
    Doron Lamb (Class of 2010) - 5* (Rivals: #21 Overall, #3 SG)
    Darius Miller (Class of 2008) - 4* (Rivals: #42 Overall, #8 SF)
    Kyle Wiltjer (Class of 2011) - 5* (Rivals: #22 Overall, #7 PF)
    Jon Hood (Class of 2009) - 4* (Rivals: #40 Overall, #11 SG)
    Stacey Poole (Class of 2010) - 4* (Rivals: #33 Overall, #4 SF)
Jarrod Polson - Not in the Rivals database
Elroy Vargas (Class of 2008 - UF Transfer) - 4* (Rivals: #26 Overall, #9 PF)
Antiquawn Beckham (Class of 2008 - MSU Transfer) - 3* (Rivals: Unranked)
Ryan Harrow (Class of 2010 - NCSU Transfer) - 5* (Rivals: #19 Overall, #6 PG)
    Sam Malone - Walk on
    Brian Long - Walk on

You're argument doesn't really work here...

Ok let me rephrase that, chemistry over 5* is a little exaggerated. I understand there's always room for improvement but why ruin a good thing. For example Washington. They were very very good for a while under Romar, then he started straining from the norm, and took a downward turn.

You also do realize that Nerlens Noel tore his ACL last year, right? Kentucky went down the ****ter after he went down but up to that point they were 17-6, they finished 21-12...

Back to the point, Roland has the best post in this discussion. I was wrong to go with 5* as the benchmark, but unanimous 4* isn't too much to ask. No one is badmouthing Tad's recruiting - he's done an AMAZING job - but if we consistently want to stay in the top 4 of the Pac, we can't keep hoping to hit on sleepers and under-ranked players. That's a great starting point. At some point, you have to move up.

At this point it's looking like the 2015 is going to be that 'point', so it should be sooner rather than later.

Let's hope. I may be setting the bar high, but anything less than Boatwright & Hemsley will be disappointing.

Part of me is selfish -- bring in the consensus 4 star and one-and-done 5 star players like Kentucky does. I'll be jumpin' for joy.

On the other hand it's hard to ignore the recent successes of Butler and Wichita State.

Both scenarios have something in common. A really good coach.

If your expectation is for Tad and his staff to recruit at a Calipari like level, you're going to be disappointed. It's just completely unrealistic. They've had the #1 class five straight years, and most years it hasn't even been close. It's great if you can pull it off like he has, but don't act like it locks you into the National Title game or something. As great as they have recruited, they've still been bounced 3 of the last 4 years.

If Tad and his staff get 7-8 Top 100 recruits, I won't be ****ing afraid of anyone in the country

I think 2015 will be the first year Boyle lands a 5 star or a player really close to that level, whether on scout or rivals. Boatright might be the most realistic target we can land in that category. Hemsley will be a four star, top 100 guy.

I'm not sure who it will be yet, but I expect recruitig to really jump up in that class and going forward if we can keep progressing as a program. Deron Davis in 2016 is a top 20 recruit, so he will be a 5 star guy as long as he doesn't get hurt. If we can go to the Sweet 16 or higher, that will really boost our chances of landing those elite recruits.

Oviously the 4* 5* guys are going to be more picky. We have proven to be a much much better program, but have not flashed true excellence outside of out PAC-12 Championship run. This year gives us the best opportunity to prove to the very best players in the country we are legit and aiming for the final four and beyond...that'll get everyone's attention.

Besides consistent winning, the big thing helping with recruiting is player development. In addition to the 1st round picks, every double-digit scorer from Tad's time here is playing professionally. A couple guys who weren't even 10+ ppg guys are earning a paycheck playing hoops.

He has also kept everyone eligible. Parents have to like what they see.
