I lifted this from Rivals (nice work, BuffMike).

Here's a big reason that neither the Big 12 nor the Pac-10 will want to have 11 teams in 2011. The Big 12 wants to shift to a 9-game conference schedule. The Pac-10 wants to keep playing a 9-game conference schedule.

    However...

It is mathematically impossible for 11 teams to each play 9 conference games.

    11 x 9 = 99 total games

    Each game is between 2 teams, so: 99 / 2 = 49.5 = impossible

Each conference either has to have 8 or 10 conference games in order to make the numbers work with an odd number of teams.

Add to that no Conference Title game for either conference ( < $$$)

I think that the two posts above are why this is our last year in the Big 12. The Mack has a good reason to be rid of us and and the Pac has a good reason to bring us into the fold. Something will get done.

They only play 8 games in conference each year.

OK, then if that's the way it works, then that's the way both the Pac 11 and the Big 11 will do it in 2011.

    Whoa.

They COULD do it that way. The difference is - the Big teneleven doesn't have distinct divisions. There is no North/South. There's just 11 teams. The Big Teneleven has maintained some traditional rivalries (i.e. Ohio State and Michigan play EVERY year) but there are some years that Big Teneleven teams don't play each other.

The problem in the Big Twelve-Nebraska is that the Big 12 north has 5 teams, and the Big 12 south has 6 teams. Right now, the Big 12 plays 8 conference games. 5 games against teams from your own division and 3 cross-division games. I suppose for one year they could eliminate the divisions and just schedule 8 games, with a few teams maintaining their traditional rivalries (i.e. OU/Texas, Kansas/Missouri, OU/OSU, KU/KSU, Texas/A&M, Texas/Tech, etc.) My guess is that Colorado's 2011 schedule will include games against the Big 12 South teams.

It wasn't a true round robin. (not every team plays every team). Hence, why there were so many "Co"-champions. The two teams with the best records in the Big televen didn't play each other at any point in the season.

And going to an 8 game schedule only makes their problem of trying to get everybody to SoCal at least once a year that much worse...

From what I read in an earlier article, there is NO WAY the Pac-10 will play eight conference games for one season because every Pac-10 school has only three OOC games lined up for 2011 and they would have to play FCS schools for a fourth OOC game and I don't think USC will want to play one FCS school...I think they would be screwing their pride and tradition that way.

    LOL...good one.

I think a good number of Pac-10 fans wouldn't like playing FCS schools.
