At least it is in the discussion now. Honestly, Embree has until the end of the season to start showing progress, which includes 3 of the final 4 games at home. But I have a lot of confidence that being home for 3 of the final 4 will be what does him in. Like I said yesterday, losing 70-14 1000 miles away to the #2 team in the country won't really get him in trouble, but being blown out for the final games of the season in Folsom and not winning a single game in the state of Colorado is likely to really increase the heat locally to white hot.

Barring a miraculous turnaround, it is likely that at the end of this season Embree will have 1 win in Folsom in 2 years. Try to sell season tickets when current ticket holders have witnessed ONE win at home in 2 years.

    This..

The AD does a terrible job in marketing this football program as it is... I see 10X more advertising in Denver for the Goats then I do for the Buffs.

thorburn has gone full-retard on this. he'd rather be "right" and tell us that only he thought we should have hired hoke or someone like that rather than an insider. yep, burnsie, you were the only one upset about an inside hire...

so, let's continue to burn the program on the pyre of your self-righteousness. thanks, but no. it isn't about your ego. it is about what is best for CU football. this staff needs to go.

So I read that piece... where was the argument for keeping Embree? Did I miss it?

his premise is that we reap what we sow, we got what we wanted (and deserved), despite his brilliant protestations to the contrary about the hire, and therefore we must now live with the consequences.

    **** that. fire everyone.

We need to make a strong statement by hiring a high profile coach to replace Embree to keep our recruits and maybe get Parsons to recommit.

They need to do it now. Not fire him, but announce that he will not be coming back next year so that now everyone knows there is a search gong on. Wait till the last game of the season and that is OK too but not a day longer than that. The AD needs to be in full blown search mode by November 23rd and interviewing that weekend and the following week.

Official lame duck coaches are terrible to have around, not a good idea. Either keep him and announce at the end of the season or fire him now and name an interm, likely either Brookhart or Cabral.

Thorburn is a douchebag. He makes the argument that he was right about the type if coach who should have been hired, saying that he wasn't in the "hire a CU guy camp. He thinks this should give him some credibility for his lame argument that Embree should continue to be given a chance.

Thorburn's two arguments don't work well together, and I think it's because he's only making the second one because he's become one of the media "chosen few" while Embree's been at the helm.

Saying "I was right about this," and then saying "that's why you should think that my unpopular argument that contradicts my original idea is correct," makes no sense.

I really wish we had some decent sportswriters in the Denver/Boulder area.

I think most people missed the point of the article. It really wasn't about the retention of Embree or not. It was more about the fickleness/stupidity/impatience/selfishness of fans.

That was definitely his thinly veiled point, which is why I decided to point out that his strange reasoning holds no water.

Fire Embree soon. After this season's last game, fine. Don't give him four years of failure and dooming him like Hawk, Kevin Steele, Guy Morriss, etc. Give him a GOOD argument that he can use at his next job. Giving him FOUR years of failure is far worse than 2 years - he can claim "not enough time!" this way. Be considerate of Embree - give him a chance and a better future. Fire him THIS season. Think of HIS future opportunities.

So his entire premise re: Embree is "Embree is honest."

    Wha?

Embree could be the next George Washington, he still completely sucks as a head football coach.

Exactly. Embree did a lot of damage to himself because he publicly and internally stated that the goal for this team was a bowl game. The minute that Colorado lost in the opener, and then especially against Sac State, the players and fans knew that the season goal was lost and now nothing more than a pipe dream. I think it is only fair that he is accountable for his inability to evaluate what he expected from this team. Unrealistic expectations and goals from the coaching staff have done a lot of harm to a young team that was badly in need of leadership to make any progress.

I don't have a problem with coming out publicly with your stated goals. Otherwise, they have no teeth. What I have a problem with is sh!tty football. I've seen a lot of sh!tty football the last seven years. I'm going to see a lot more sh!tty football in the next few years. Douchebags like Thorburn don't get it - we suck. Keeping Embree and this staff around isn't going to make us any better. The whole argument about keeping them because making a change means starting all over again is moronic. We NEED to start all over again. The sooner we figure that out, the better. Hell, we should have fired Embree about 10 seconds after the CSU game.

I don't see it that way. Embree can't come out and say his goal for the season is to win 2 games.

The AD (and McCartney and his stooges) needs to realize this sooner, rather than later.

He also doesn't need to publicly state the goal as getting to a bowl game

I disagree. Look at the very first paragraph from Kyle Ringo:

    http://www.buffzone.com/cu-news/ci_21870507/football-expected-oregon-ducks-steamroll-cu-buffs

How do you think this affected the Psyche of such a young and inexperienced football team after the offseason goal for the last nine months had been "bowl game" when they realistically knew that was gone after the very first game? I think a coach in Embree's shoes needs to come out and realistically say that our goal is always to win and get to a bowl game, but most importantly we need to focus on playing sound football and the rest will take care of itself.

Of course, I really don't think it would matter either way because no matter what they will suck balls under Embo.

I think this very inexperienced coaching staff actually believed at the time that a bowl game was a realistic and attainable goal. Obviously they were wrong, but you have to set goals to achieve them.

I would normally agree with this reasoning because a new coach should get 3 or 4 years to get his style of players in place and change the culture, but in this case it's painfully obvious (at least to most) that this staff simply isn't D-I material. Sometimes you just need to realize you made a bad hire early on in the regime and cut your losses.

Which, given their contracts, would be minimal. Especially when considering the projected revenue losses of keeping the current staff.

His future opportunities include getting back into the NFL as a tight end's coach. That's probably his ceiling at this point.

Read between the lines. Thorburn's saying that he knew this was a bad idea. Others knew it was a bad idea. The hiring process was rammed down our throats by program insiders who demanded that the next coach and his staff be Buffs. This was directed at them, not the fans except for us being fickle (which we are).
