BOULDER — Hours, days and weeks (maybe months) remain before a starting quarterback is identified at the University of Colorado, but after only four spring practices there is movement on that front.

Sounds like Hansen is positioning himself nicely.

I really don't see that happening. If it works out that way, it will mean that CU started out really poorly, and Hansen had to come in to right the ship. At that stage of the season, I'm not sure how effective he'd be.

The ideal situation is where the starter is named by August 15. I'm personally hoping that starter is Hansen. It's time to start matching the talent at QB with the talent all around him.

Cody will bounce back. He'll be the starter this fall.

I sincerely hope not. Do I need to remind you what happened in his last pass attempt? Batted in the air, intercepted and returned for a touchdown. :ahhhhh:

I love his competitiveness, drive, and football savvy. As I've said before, he makes the prototypical backup quarterback. The guy who can come in and run the offense in a pinch when the starter goes down. BUT, we need our starter to have more weapons in his arsenal. He needs to have better feet, a stronger arm, and taller. Hansen has all Spring, all fall camp, and the first three games of the year to get "comfortable" running the offense. We'll be in much better shape, long term, if he's able to do that.

The coaches are going to settle on a guy in Fall camp. I doubt they want to repeat the circus they had at QB last year. Cody has some work to do to hold off Hansen. I don't think he does.

    Here's my take on Cody.
The offense looks to Cody as the leader. What he lacks in top level D-1 physical attributes, he makes up for in being the emotional leader of the team.

With Cody on the bench, I do not know who the offensive leader would be. Will the team rally around Hansen the same way they do Cody? Is there an other starter anywhere on the offensive side of the ball who can bring hearts and minds together the same way Cody does?

When Cody and Tyler were involved in the mid-season QB dual, the spirit of the offense simply collapsed. It wasn't until OSU and kNU where the offense got some swagger back, which can be attributed to Cody getting the start and staying on the field. And CU lost.

I would love to see Miller or Geer or one of the RBs become the glue that holds the offense together.

The delima is whether to stay with Cody because he can manage the offense, but hasn't shown a big play capability, or go with Hansen who might not "know the playbook."

"Know the playbook" might just be a euphanism for being able to rally the team with superior leadership skills.

I don't know if Cody can be the captain from the sidelines. You really need the captain on the field.

The captain needs a stronger arm and 6 inch growth spurt.

And be able to disguise a play, and find passing lanes, and not stare down the reciever.

which would put him 4 to 5 inches taller than Hansen... and Drew Brees... etc.

He's wearing a visor this year so this will not be an issue...

    :rofl2:

Anyway, height has never been the major issue with Cody. His lack of mobility and or arm strength have always been bigger issues.

Height has been an issue. He struggles getting the ball over the line, and we have to move him around to get passing lanes. Mobility and arm strength compound that problem.

That being said, Hansen is only what, a couple of inches taller?

The key is mobility. Even if he was 6'4", his offensive lineman are still three inches taller than him. The defensive lineman, may be shorter, but when they put their arms up, you can't get the ball over them on short bullet passes. It is about passing lanes.

Cody is one hell of a team leader, though. If he's on the bench, will Hansen or an other player be able to rally the offense?

^^ I personally think intangibles come second, not first. Being a leader is certainly valuable, but if you can't make plays or step up your game, it becomes pretty irrelevant IMO.

Maybe with hansen we won't be behind to need to rally the offense.

Fans make height an issue. All QB's throw in passing lanes. You really think Hansen can see over Ryan Miller and Bryce Givens on the right side of the ball? Same for Ballenger. QB's are taught to throw in passing lanes. Especially when the OL is made up of OT's.

Funny thing about this is there wasn't anybody pissing and moaning about this when Cody was beating Texas Tech and OU. He has shown the ability to lead this team. I think last season was Cody trying to carry the team on his back. He tried to make too much happen. Do I have to remind people here that Cody was only a Sophomore last season?

careful... you are making sense. This team can't win more than 6 games with Cody as a QB, seven at most! He is to short!

I'm not some big Cody fan telling anyone he's going to lead us to a MNC. But at the moment he's the best option we have at QB. Hansen isn't really showing too much at practice. I do agree that Hansen is a lot more athletic than CH. But Cody give us the better chance at winning.

He's going to start unless Hansen starts to show he can grasp the playbook and make the throws. But he needs to start stepping up soon. Hansen needs to win this challenge in the Spring and take some momentum to Fall Camp. If this goes into the fall, I think Cody will be the starter.

Honest question, and I just don't know enough to answer myself.
But after so few practices, is the reason Ballenger is being left out of this conversation based on the couple of comments from Helfrich to a reporter?
Is this because he hasn't pulled away and shown enough during practice so far?

I feel like we aren't being fair to him to exclude him so quickly --- so explain to me if there's something more I should understand.
