I am now 100% convinced Mike Bohn dragging his feet WILL cost this program in the long run more than it already has. I no longer believe CU can attract a coach with any potential of being a HC at any other BCS school. After several weeks of national embarrassment, coupled with years of lackluster play have completely dropped us off the map. I know this cause I moved to NC last year and NO ONE IN THIS STATE EVEN KNOWS WHO CU IS ANYMORE! No coach with any serious potential will be coming to CU to get his name and career destroyed. IF Bohn would have fired Talkins earlier it MAY have shown we have some dedication to winning and developing a winning program. Now we just look like a bunch of gutless has beens with no desire to put fourth a winning team. Now lets look at the evidence....
Guz Malzahn- was one of the leading candidates for the job months ago. He was by all accounts interested in the position. After the past few weeks sources have indicated he is no longer interested in CU. Although we do not know for sure if he lost interest or if Bohn is no longer interested in him, I am guessing it is not Bohn not wanting him!
Les Miles- Ex CU guy who would love to get out of the pressure cooker at LSU. However, in the past 3 weeks we have literally destroyed any remnant of our national image and the mad hatter has solidified his place in LSU with a few big wins. The only chance we had to get him was pursue him before the season.... but instead we stuck with Hawk and his band of losers
Mike Belotti- We may have been able to get him. He has said is is interested in coming back if he situation is right. Before this season the conditions may have been right. HOWEVER, last week he was quoted as saying he doesn't know much about CU except for the embarrassment we had on national TV. That sure doesn't make him think this is a good situation. We embarrassed ourselves one too many times for Belotti to be interested..... again thanks Mr. Bohn for the Hawkins firing delay!!
Jim McElwain- Not much has been said about him lately. But again I cannot imagine he is interested in coming into this mess when he can probably become HC at any number of schools after this year.
WHO CAN WE STILL GET?
1) Mac- probably our best choice. He exemplifies what CU should be, but at 70 not sure he will be able to give the time to turn this thing around.
2) Calhoun- He loves colorado and this would be a nice step up for him, but AFA is not likely to easily part with him
3) Eric Bienemy- No HC experience but looks like at this point we may just have to deal with that.
BOTTOM LINE- if Bohn would have acted quickly (aka last year or at minimum after the embarrassing OU loss) we may have been able to pull of a major coaching hire. We would have at least shown the world we are not interested in mediocre teams and it is not acceptable to lose. Now we have shown the world we are no longer committed to winning and we don't care about athletics. I don't see anyone big risking their career to come to CU now. That is my opinion at least.... interested if you all agree with me.
