Berk was part of a strong Grand Junction squad that reached the state quarterfinals. He was one of five non-seniors to make the 5A All-State team and finished his junior season with 10.5 sacks.

Berk is a CU legacy, as his dad was a letterwinner in 1981 as an OG. We have been in contact here and he may have already taken an unofficial visit.

Thanks to beltway buff for the heads up here.

Mike Berk just posted on the Scout board. He said he was actually a tackle even though he was listed at guard.

I really like Austin's aggressiveness, pad level and frame on the hudl highlights. He actually looks like he could grow into an OL in college, kind of like Solder.

Rivals just published an article.

I want this kid to be a Buff. You don't find his kind of toughness very often.

Berk earned all-state honors after recording 62 tackles, 10-and-a-half sacks, two fumble recoveries and one interception on defense.

He was able to have success as a junior despite playing with a bad hip.

"I tore the labrum in my hip last April and I decided to play through it," Berk said. "I had surgery about four weeks ago. Right now I am just doing a lot of upper-body work. The doctor said I might be running again in April. I am excited knowing that next year I should be able to come back healthy and have an even better season."

The article goes on to talk about his level of interest in the Buffs. Worth the read.

"Colorado is my top school right now," he said. "I've been up there before and talked with all of the coaches and really got to know them. They said they like me for tight end or defensive end and I'll play either position. I just like the coaching staff, the education and I feel comfortable there."

Berk plans to attend junior day at Colorado in March and feels he may earn his offer at that time.

One of the points I am trying to make here is recruiting always has been about limited numbers, but it is especially true with the 2013 class. We cannot take every in-state prospect that "wants to be a Buff," there have to be priorities made at every position.

As nice as the 2012 class ended up, we still need to be pulling in more elite athletes on a regular basis if we want to go where we want to go. Maybe Berk ultimately fits in with the plan or maybe he does not, we shall see.

From the little bit I've heard about this kid, he is very likely a CU lock if CU wants him. But yeah, with the small class this year the question will be if he fits in with the numbers. I hope he does.

In a low number year I agree. Focus on the top, maybe, five in state kids and, after that, look at need when assessing others. The worst thing you can do is not being honest with the fringe guys. And I'm not saying Berk is "fringe" by any means. I'd even argue that if you aren't going to offer a particular in state kid that you put a good word in with other programs.

As for Austin: 6' 5", 230, 4.8. Not bad. Not bad at all. I have visions of Nate.

Yes he most likely would commit if an offer came his way but we understand with low #''s CU will need to offer high needs 1st. He has grown up around Buffs and would like to go to CU but he knows to keep all options open and do what best for him!

He plays it well but the TE's were only used as blockers in 2011 because they rushed for almost 5000 yards! With loss of that much production he could see a few more passes his way in 2012.

This kid looks pretty good imo. Reminds me of Johnny Stuart, needs to add bulk to his frame, but once he does he could be pretty good.

That being said, I have to imagine spots are pretty limited on the DL this year, so he might have picked a bad year to graduate from high school. Maybe a greyshirt would be worth considering?

I like that idea. We can give a kid who wants to be a buff a scholarship and not have it count this year.

Only problem with is he is going graduate from HS in Dec and wants to enroll early to whatever school he goes to. It's been discussed and would have to think about it if that is whats offerred.
