Penn State transfers

because of the 85 scholly limit, I expect us to be going hard after seniors at PSU. If we can get those guys to go over 85, that's fine. But players with more eligibility would be a problem if we would have to get back to 85 in their second year. We need guys now, and don't want to negatively affect this recruiting class's #s unless it is for a special player.

While that makes sense, I would take a serviceable DL and a serviceable WR no matter what it did to our numbers. We're way too young and unproven at those positions.

OK, I thought I read somewhere that you can go over the 85 limit for PSU players this season, but you have to be below the limit the next if you do so. As in if we take 2 PSU players, putting us at 87, then next season we have to be at 83.

Am I wrong? There was a lot of misinformation out there yesterday morning about this, so I'm just confused.

This is what all the reports that I read have said. I havent seen anything directly from the NCAA about this yet though...

I think that you are allowed to go over 85 for one year then have to return to 85, not below it but that is still fuzzy.

I wouldn't mind seeing one or more quality seniors come in but also frankly PSU has been recruiting at a higher level than we have. If we can get a young guy with 2-3 years of eligibility who is a high 3* or even 4* type player I would gladly give up one of our guys who we are hoping develops into that kind of talent in the future.

This doesn't mean that you take anybody on their roster but they have a lot of kids who are more talented than what we have and what we would be bringing in instead.

I saw on ESPN that USC was going after a RB at Penn State. If true, I wish the NCAA had excluded programs currently on probation from accepting immediate transfers. Seems unfair that USC should be a beneficiaty in this debacle.

Also, CU has a connection to Penn State through Rip Scherer and his son Kyle (now a technical intern).

I couldn't agree more - from a school side.....

Somehow in their showcase moment of strength and purity the NCAA manages to implement a policy that once again allow the uber rich to get richer. However, from the student athlete side I wouldn't want to be told, 'Sorry, we just blew up your program. Even though you may want to salvage a few years for your self by heading to a MNC contender, you can't do that either. So instead why don't you find a nice rebuilding program to settle down at? You won't get the same visibility, and aspirations of playing at the next level may take a hit, but it will help everyone feel better about a bad situation.'

I guess on the bright side - if USC grabs a few Penn State players there may be a few 4*s thrown back in the PAC12 recruiting pool.

I doubt many Seniors would be looking to transfer from PSU unless they are riding the bench. They have ties with their teammates and their school. They also pretty well know their status on the team. The Freshmen and sophomores will be the most likely to transfer - they are looking at playing their careers under this cloud. Take a player like Donovan Smith - a RSFR who is projected as a starting Tackle.

On the realistic side - CU is really not on the radar with a lot of those players. Geographically we are a long way away; CU probably did not recruit many of them previously and probably not with this staff; realistically CU has little to offer other than playing time. The elite players will get playing time almost anywhere.

I do not see CU really in the picture for many of these players and I am speculating there will not be a mass exodus.

I would think schools like Pitt, Rutgers and other East Coast schools could get those guys in easier from a logistics standpoint than CU.

How long is their transfer window? Do they only have these 3 weeks prior to the season starting to make a decision?

Sounds like Nik is right - and the culture there is going to keep them afloat.

maybe. all it will take is a key player or two to bolt...then the floodgates will open.

I expect mostly freshman, recent recruits and sophomores to leave. I imagine Penn St. will fall outside of a top 40 program within 3 years. I am hoping this well help with CU recruiting as the kids who go to Penn St. will go elsewhere and maybe we can pick up some of the kids from D.C. and Maryland as the chips fall down the ladder.

Douglas is part of this year's class (2013). He was one of their top recruits. I figure their core players aren't going anywhere.

Not so sure about that. I think Redd is gone-and probably to USC: http://espn.go.com/college-football...-undecided-other-players-get-openly-recruited

Did you guys notice that it says that other schools can recruit PSU players and it doesn't count against scholarship totals? That is news to me. Makes me intrigued about going after some of their players but at the same time, something about it seems sleezy.

^^^Every PSU player is being recruited? That is hard to believe, but I guess it could be true. Some, or at least one, player has 50 offers? The Illinois coaches are on the PSU campus poaching? That would take some balls. I would guess there will be a handful of players on the roster that bail. Maybe 3-5, but it will be tough given there are only a few weeks before school starts. I bet the transfers go to private schools where admissions can be more easily managed.

Too bad we can't get in on a little of this action, looks like it is going to be open season real soon
