What's your perspective so far on recruiting???

Any thoughts so far on the 6 recruits (not counting JUCO transfer)?

They are all 3* (except Waz) which is good but none are ranked by Rivals.

Not a very impressive offer list:
Arkansas St, Arizona, Army, Eastern Wash, Idaho, New Mex St, North Texas, Northern Colo, SDSU, Utah, UTEP, Wazzou, Wyoming.

Would you say this is trending better than Embree did? Seems pretty similar to me, but I'm not much of a recruiting guru.

Are we getting in under the radar on a lot of these kids, kinda like Bobo?

Thoughts??

Yes it's much better than Embree's 2013 class, probably on par with the 2012 class through the same timeframe. Embree and his staff were pretty loose with their offers where as I believe MacIntyre and his staff have personally evaluated nearly all of the offers in-person through camps. The camps mean they know what kind of player they are getting in-terms of coachability, work ethic, athleticism, etc. which IMO will lead to nothing but good results overall.

I've mentioned this in Barzil... The WORST team in NCAA can't be turned around overnight. Mike Mac has done a good job of getting a few good commits and also getting our name out there to many good players. However, even with that good will, CU needs to show improvement ON the field (not hard compared to last year). Once we have that, we'll start to see commits from higher ranked players. That being said, we beat out Arizona for a QB offered by Rich Rod (good sign) and we're beating schools in recruiting that we should start beating on the field as well. Mike Mac was a great hire for CU IMO. He's doing all the things I expect him too and I can only hope his system works on the field which can speed up our recruiting success.

I'm not concerned with the offer lists on the recruits we've signed. Look at David Fales. He looks like a legit NFL prospect and HCMM pulled him off the garbage heap. No schools were really looking at him as a transfer.

The pool of prospects and resources Mike MacIntyre now has dwarf what he had at SJSU. Every single player he has gotten to commit this season would have been top of the class at SJSU. He and his crew have visited nearly every HS in California and Colorado. They've done the legwork. They've only offered to players that they are truly convinced will help the program in a specific way. So far, I would categorize the recruiting as excellent. Sure, I'd like to see more excitement about CU, and more commitments (AZ has 12!) but I like the slow and steady approach. It shows that there's a careful, measured approach being taken. That's what we need.

Skinsfan I am with you although I am happy if we only have half our class filled by Sept 1. I am cautiously optimistic we will have a much better product on the field this year and that could get some higher rated prospects to commit as well. Regardless, virtually all of our commits have a BCS offer and I would disagree that this class is on par with Embree's last class-I am pretty sure at this stage of the recruiting process we haver more early commits who are rated and have BCS offers.

Good points Skins. I agree with the Coach Mac hire...either he or Gary Anderson were what this program needed. I agree this class will rank higher than any of his three at SJSU. And what's cool is he almost beat Stanford with lesser talent. My optimism is growing...it's downright tepid right now!!!!

He's not at SJSU anymore, so why is that recruiting the goal. We need to worry about closing the gap with teams in our conference.

The goal isn't to "be better than SJSU" but it is worth comparing what he did at SJSU to what he's done here in regards to recruiting.

This^^^^

Doesn't matter if we have the talent to beat Utah State and Idaho, we have to beat Utah and Washington.

There aren't any players on the current commit list that I wish we hadn't taken a commit from. At the same time the rest of the class does need to include all players at least this good and some of them a step above what we have so far. I want to see us get commits from some kids considered good enough to have offers from teams above the bottom third of our conference. We need some kids that other schools get upset about us getting.

Unfortunately, a number of people have convinced themselves that 3 point loss to Stanford was a true indicator of the talent differential between the two teams and that improved recruiting at CU will close that gap.

I agree with this. There's a long way to go until signing day and no reason to try to fill the class now. I'd be happy with a couple more commits from guys like White, Lee, Vaughn, and maybe Alex Anderson now, but we need to keep a number of slots open.

He took talent that was not much better than CU, and almost beat Stanford at Stanford. Stanford called off the dogs on CU in the second quarter at CU. Thats coaching. We had none, his crew are good coaches. I never said his guys were the same talent as Stanford. I think he is a hell of a coach and with talent a bit better, we will win a few games, look competent, and grab a few higher ranked kids at the end. But I dont want us full of 5 star attitudes right now. I want kids that MM wants for his system, because I have faith that he knows what he is doing. Higher ranked classes will come, but I want wins and a team that buys in.

Recruiting is going decently. We aren't really recruiting on a level above where we were in the past, but it's not going to be one of our awful classes either.

I'd give it a B, or somewhere around there. Still alot of work to do. We need difference makers everywhere. I'd love to see a back that can take it to the house whenever he gets the ball. We need one of those.

Agreed. Talent to me isn't the point, it's the fact this coaching staff actually coached up the kids to compete at an FBS level. Usually "coaching up" talk is just bull**** to cover a bad recruiting class or bad coaching, but these guys actually did it.

If SJSU would have beaten CU by 50 points last year, why is it not relevant to compare our recruiting this year to SJSU's?

Even the smart guys realize that the "services" are only really evaluating a few of the guys they rate, and most of the 3-stars it's a crapshoot. CU can get a lot better by doing what Skinsfan55 points out, which is getting commits from kids that would all be "top of SJSU's class". That puts us way ahead of SJSU, and yes, way behind Stanford. But if those kids are:

a. academically oriented and will stay in school and out of jail, and
b. coachable, moldable, competitive types who want to get better, and
c. perhaps a bit more talented than other programs are currently evaluating... Thanks to relentless effort and hustle by the staff in first hand, in person evaluations

Then, CU will improve drastically each year going forward.

I am reminded of the words of the the great Jon Embree (who was 100% correct in this case) that were to the effect: "it's not the guys you missed getting, it's the guys you get, that you missed on (mis-evaluated)".

This staff is doing great due diligence right now to get guys they feel will make us better.

Our two ILB guys are good examples. They are instinctual tackling machines that are great athletes. They both are a bit undersized at the moment. So were some of the greatest LBs in Colorado history. I have a gut feeling that Baer knows what he wants and height, 40 times, or max bench may not be his top consideration. The LB that meets all of the criteria to score high at a combine, is also a good student and citizen, loves football, and is an instinctual tackling machine..... He's not coming to CU in 2014. Period. Yet SJSU had 2 very good LBs last year. Google "Keith Smith" SJSU and you will see a guy who looks very similar to our recent commits.... Not a coincidence folks.

I like every single recruit so far, a lot. I couldn't care less what their ranking is/was or who else is recruiting them, not in 2013. I liked every single recruit the new staff added in their late first class, and I've seen with my own eyes that Reid and Gillam are good enough to play about anywhere in the country. And nobody wanted them either. So SJSU and now 2 for 2 at CU makes me a believer, until proven otherwise.

I believe that. I think SJSU was not far behind Stanford and if they played again, it would have been an equally tough game. Watch how many guys on that 2012 SJSU team play in the NFL. It will surprise a lot of people.

It's like buffaholic took what I wanted to say and worded it way better. I 100% agree that most 3 star guys are a total crapshoot. I mean, look at PRich, he was 3 stars, so was Johnny Manziel, so was Dion Jordan. If the staff is out there pounding the pavement, finding guys that are a little better than their 3 star ranking would indicate... this is going to prove to be a really productive class.

Yes, it was a good coaching job, but we need to be careful about overstating that one game. If that game were played 10 times, there's a good chance none of the other 9 would be that close. To compete in the Pac12 every week, we need to recruit better than conference opponents, not SJSU. As much as I think improved coaching will help us, you can only do so much to overcome a significant talent deficit.

I hope you're right. If so, we're going to surprise a lot of people the next few years. I see SJSU in a similar situation to BSU though. Both schools play above their talent level, per the recruiting sites, and can get up for the occasional big game against the better programs in the country, but would struggle if matched up against BCS opponents week in and week out.

Jordan and PRich were 4 stars.. Manziel was a 5.7 rr 3* with a pretty impressive offer list. We're not getting prospects similar to them.

We should never have to worry about recruiting with BCS schools again. The SJSU model is flawless.

Every great coaching staff needs to have at least one or two dynamic recruiters that can sell the dream to these kids and make them believe that wherever they are coaching is the best place in the world to play football and go to school - do we have that on this staff? I'm really not sure, and it worries me.

I keep telling myself it's early in this staff's tenure and I should give them time, but we need to be winning occasional recruiting battles against teams like Houston, WSU, Utah, and Cal now even before we show improvement on the field. If we can't outsell these bottom of the conference schools now, even for just a few kids, then how are we going to win battles against UCLA, ASU, or Washington when we start winning a few games?

I guess my point is that while winning is of course the best recruiting tool out there, we can't just wait until the day we start winning to improve recruiting - we need to be out-hustling and out-selling if we really want recruiting to improve substantially.
