'14 TX OT Elijah Rodriguez (Verbal to Texas)

OK, since I know Mr. Rodriguez reads this board, I went to www.bestplaces.net. Six cities in Colorado make the list before the first, New Orleans at #139, from Louisiana. Boulder/Longmont comes in at #142 (I'm sure Longmont drug the rating down. Why didn't they consider Boulder by itself?) Baton Rouge? Barely made the top 300 at #295. I rest my case!

You guys ridicule me now. But when Mr. Rodriguez commits to CU and cites a post he read on Allbuffs by a Mr. "DBT", you will be thanking me.

Add on that the "commute" from Houston on I-10 is BRUTAL (all caps). I'll go with Grandpa DBT / JR's lil bro karma over the Mad Hatter any day. Just in case, I'll wear my CU gear everywhere I go in H-Town...well, I already do that, but Mr. Rodriguez will know why I'm doing it!

Re: '14 TX OT Elijah Rodriguez (Verbal to Colorado)

We need some SECesque alums to step up to the plate and, you know, make travel arrangements and costs a little more palatable,

At the very least, if he decommits and goes to LSU, the football gods owe us!

Flying time from Houston to Denver is 2:20 starting at $118. A round trip to Baton Rouge, using $0.55 per mile, will cost you $300 in gas and wear/tear on your car. They'll have to stay in a hotel either way.

You are making arguments like you have never traveled in your life.

Don't forget to add time to get to the airport and security. Then you have airport parking, rental car in baton rouge, hotels, food cost for things you can't bring.

He does get a free colon check at the airport, so that is a plus.

I'm sensing a cut and paste of the last 20 posts to the Island with a catchy name like "DBT's Lonely Planet"

Somehow I don't think this one is over yet.

It is an uphill battle considering that LSU is closer to home, a winning program, and Miles is a great snake-oil salesman.

On the other hand CU offers a better overall experience educationally and in terms of a place to spent 4-5 years of your life. He would have a much better chance to play early and be part of building something.

As was mentioned earlier with cheap airfares the difference in traveling to Boulder vs. Batton Rouge isn't that great and is a much more enjoyable place to go. Let's see how he reacts to his in-home with M2.

Let's also see how he responds to the fact that CU was in on him early and believed in him early on. Does his word in commiting to CU mean that much to him.

With some kids I'd say this thing is over and time to move on. In this case it will be tough but I wouldn't give up yet.

Yeah, football recruits are into hiking, hunting, skiing, mountain biking, cycling and camping at the expense of being a BMOC--let's face it, the amount of groupies at LSU outnumber CU and LSU has hotter girls--a 100k fans gameday experience and the some of the best coaches money can buy with top notch facilities.

A day in the life of a UNM soccer player is something like:
1. Get up at 6am for 7am workouts
2. Class from 9-1pm
3. Nap
4. Practice from 3-5 or so, including skills development, scouting, film, etc...
5. Dinner/chill time with friends
6. Homework from 8-11pm

That's from a friend that was on the team. Saturdays and Sundays are busy with either trying to catch up with schoolwork for days missed traveling or gamedays (traveling, etc...). I'm sure football players have higher demands on them placed than soccer players, especially at a place like LSU. You are looking at it in the eyes of someone who wasn't a D1 player, but a regular student. For the regular student CU >>>>> LSU, but it's certainly the opposite for a football player.

And I like how people are ignoring the fact that yes it is only $120 to fly to Denver. But that's per person. Say Elijah's grandpa, grandma, mom, brother, etc... (I don't know about his family situation) go. A 4 hr drive costs me about $70 in gas roundtrip (pops is about 4 hrs). That's also 4 hours door to door from Houston to BR. There's no way it's 4 hrs door to door going from Houston to Boulder.

Being a former LSU player would also carry a lot of weight in the area he's from. LSU isn't Stanford, but neither are we and the connections he would make (or just the LSU football player fact) would be a "nice to have" when putting it on his resume when he tries to get a job. Unless he wants to become a PhD in something like Aero (and if he did, he should go to aTm) a business/communications/general studies major just about carry the same weight, unless it's a top 10 school.

NM what you say has some validity but tell me that there haven't been plenty of guys who have fallen in love with Boulder and decided to spent their college years there. They don't do any more fishing and hunting than the guys at LSU go to the coast and go shrimping and deep sea fishing.

As I stated there is no question that overcoming the LSU is a tough hill to climb but it wouldn't shock me if he ends up in Boulder. It isn't like we have nothing in our favor.

NM is doing a helluva job recruiting for LSU.

Yeah. I'm not really sure what "a day in the life of a NM soccer player" has to do with anything, but maybe NM is channeling redundant skinsfan who starts every post with, "I'm a skins fan, and..."

Hell, Alfred Williams is from Houston, came for a visit to Boulder and fell in love with it. I'm sure his family wanted to see him play as well and him being in Boulder didn't seem to be that big of a deal. I don't know for sure, but I'll bet he was recruited heavily by SEC schools. I think Al would tell you that it was a great change for him to get out of the area and go to a different part of the country.

But each kid has specific reasons why they make the decisions they do. For one it might be family, for one it might be education, for another it could be going to a big time program, etc. There are tons of factors and combinations of factors that play into the decision and us fans can't really argue one way or the other what is best or right for a particular recruit. We CU fans rationalize what we think is important and why our school is a great choice. But our rationalization has nothing to do with what a kid thinks is important.

Of course, there are some good reasons for a football player to go to LSU; but there are equally as many good reasons to come play football at CU. Don't sell CU or our co-eds short. In the end, he will have to decide what is the better fit for him. If I was a betting man, I would put my money on coach Mac, Walters and Bernardi, (who were on him from the start) a chance to be part of the revival of a great program with new facilities, beautiful campus, mountains and great weather. Two-a-days in Louisiana alone would be enough for me to choose Boulder.

NM is just being a realist. I hate that he claimed faith and commitment, and will dump us for the prettier girl, but thats life.
Not just the prettier girl but the prettier girl with the wealthy father that lets you borrow his Ferrari and always picks up the dinner tab.

Until CU offers everything from a football standpoint that LSU does the beauty of Boulder and any type of faith will be meaningless. Best of luck to Elijah, wherever he chooses to go.

To show that these kids don't really have the normal college life that non D1 athletes have. I spent a lot of time hiking when I went to CU. I know others that did a lot of climbing and skiing. When you are on scholarship for bball and football or any other sport your life revolves around that sport. I want CU to be a place that guys come because of the football program, the rest is the icing on the cake. He'll spend most of his time in his dorm or in CUs facilities with some partying here and there.

Is it cool that you can go skiing? Hell yes. When at BR you can go to the ocean or hit up New Orleans maybe on a long weekend. Most of these kids are broke college students so those are special occasions. Every place has something unique about it. A lot of great kids go to Tuscaloosa and I bet that's a dump. Alabama players are proud of their team and their university in the way that we are proud of attending CU.

Maybe he does fall in love with Boulder. I remember my first visit to CU. I knew immediately it was for me and I wasn't given the start treatment. I'm also a Latino and it was important for my mom to give the a-ok for me. She didn't want me to go to LA and even though I was 22 at the time I took her advice very seriously . Does that mean anything w/r/t to Elijah? Maybe, but I don't know. I don't know him or anyone in his circles.

It's important for MM to be able to close, but I wouldn't feel bad if he "went against his word." I went guys that want to be buffs and don't feel guilty about taking another offer. Those guys have a tendency to leave. If we sign him and he leaves in a year or two to be closer to family then that's two years not developing another player. We can't afford that. Our attrition is awful.

I guess I'm just setting myself up for disappointment. We are struggling against recruiting Wazzou and Oregon St, how are we going to beat out a team that competes for MNCs? We need guys like Elijah to help turn this around. Make no doubt, I want him to be a Buff. I just think our shot of landing him is less than 30%.

I agree with most everything you said (except for the BR proximity to the ocean - La doesn't have much in the way of beaches). But I agree with you about recruiting battles with the likes of LSU. Hard to win based soley on football right now, but you can't beat the big boys if you don't go up against them. Go get em, MM!

No official visit set up to LSU yet according to the recruiting websites. LSU has 3 visits set up for OT's this month. One 1/17 for an Ole Miss soft commit, another 1/24 who appears to favor LSU, and a former Vandy commit for 1/31 (no LSU offer listed yet). Hopefully they land 1-2 of these guys first

I don't think LSU is all that great. CU is a nicer school academically and in setting. LSU is a bigger football school in a football conference, but there is also more competition at each position. He has a much better shot at starting and starting earlier at CU. If you're good, you will get seen and make it to the pros. Nate Solder seems to be doing ok. And I think the girls at CU are hotter, I thought the girls at CU were in the best shape of any school I've been to. All that skiing makes some nice bodies. A lot of schools girls add a lot of weight bc of the drinking.

I don't even know how to respond to this.

:why:

Hey, you clean this up a bit and he makes some valid points. it's kind of a lesson on free association.

Well, this does raise the point that perception is everything. It's not unreasonable to say that someone could tour both LSU and CU as a student and think that living in Louisiana would suck and that Boulder is more up their alley. Even if only 1% of athletes thought this way (I'm sure the number is much, much higher) that still means there's still plenty of like minded guys out there.

I've lived in both Baton Rouge and Boulder. IMHO BTR sucks BUT the LSU campus is actually pretty and a big surprise here .... their football facilities are top notch.. blows CU away-

Yeah I can definitely see why any recruit would pick LSU. The campus is nice, the facilities are amazing, and they're competing for championships. For someone like Rodriguez, Baton Rouge is much more similar (and a whole lot closer) to Houston than Boulder is. Furthermore, BR and LSU is much more religious than Boulder.

That being said, he could have a great connection with our coaches, he could have fallen in love with Boulder, and he could really want to stand by his commitment. I'm glad it's looking good right now, we need all the help we can get on the oline.

Another note, Jeff Grimes interviewed for the LSU job, let's hope he doesn't come back to bite us on this one.

Been wondering where Grimes might end up. Interesting that he won a MNC with Auburn but when Malzahn came back to Auburn, he didn't keep him.

I honestly don't think it matters how "religious" a community is to a potential recruit. I'm sure he cares more about his relationship with his coaches and teammates than the other 150k people in the community that he will never meet.

The fact that BR is more similar to Houston is probably not a strength. It's closer to home is it's geographical location.

I have heard there are some family circumstances that have affected some of his career moves. LSU would definitely be an interesting stop for him.
