An irresponsible post on one of those anonymous message boards today has caused some calls to both my office, sports information, and to the football department, including two media inquiries. So I have chosen to address this head on.

A person posted something that was 100 percent erroneous regarding uniform number changes in football (of which there have been several, there always are this time of year). The person, known to the department, is in no way credible on the subject.

Bernard Jackson personally requested a switch into jersey No. 10, which he had worn up until he came to CU; because others already wore it (QB James Cox the last four years), it was not previously available to him. I personally asked if he had made the switch to emulate anyone who had worn the number, in particular CU’s own Kordell Stewart. He told me he had always wanted the number, and scoffed at the suggestion that No. 7 was taken from him as this person implied in her post.

Thus, his No. 7 became available to an offensive player, and Cody Hawkins selected it; it was a number that he, too, previously had worn. (He did not ask for it to emulate anyone who had worn it either, in particular Bronco great John Elway.)

It is truly sad that this person felt a need to write such trash in attempt to portray a rift or controversy where nothing of the sort exists. We seldom if ever address rumors from these sites, but this particular one was obviously designed to try and stir up trouble; it’s nothing short of mean-spirited gossip.

Fans are always welcome to call the sports information office for the absolute truth on matters such as these; if we don’t know, we’ll check it out and get back to you.

I'll admit I lurk and post over at that other place. I saw that post and thought it was pretty ridiculous at the outset. Plati apparently had his fill and I think it is pretty funny he cut loose in public. Not a real good precedent though. DP will be expected to respond when things get out of hand over there which means he'll be responding about once a week.:smile2:

Sometimes I get the feeling Dave Plati HATES the anonymity of fan sites. Probalby hates fan sites altogether.

Wow. He has time to repsond to internet message board postings ? Is this a precendent or one time thing ?

I think we have all learned to take interent postings with a grain of salt. In my opinion he over reacted.

His response was prompted by the media inquiries he had begun to receive in response to BC's post. At that point, he had no choice but to address the issue publicly, in my opinion. Otherwise, the dumb**** reporters are just going to go hog wild with reports about chaos in the program, Hawk favoring Cody, BJax getting screwed, etc.

If CU has learned anything in the last few years, it should be that addressing these things as early and as well as possible should be a priority.

yes, he probably does hate them.

don't you know the backstory of plati and the CUAD versus smitty and netbuffs?

it was really quite awful.

Exactly. Totally agree

I probably don't know the whole story. I do remember reading Smitty wanted a press pass and didnt Plati say no unless nebuffs was no longer anonymous?

Doesn't the media know 97.6% of all things posted on the internet are made up? :smile2:

Yeah, but the media accounts for 50% of all stuff on the internet, so they're the worst offender.:smile2:

DP added an update to his message....

"Update: I have had two cordial and pleasant e-mail exchanges with the poster of the original message; I explained my side and why I needed to address this in such a manner; she apologized, and I reiterated that we at CU appreciate her past and present support of the program and that we need more people like her, as she has in fact been here through thick and thin with the Buffaloes."

Now I REALLY want to give Plati some rep. I think he's handled this really well...

EDIT: Now that all this seems to be over, I'll add that one reason I'm glad Plati came out and publicly addressed this is that we are in the chase for a real stud QB. I can't imagine it would make Landry Jones much more likely to come here if the perception sticks that Cody is getting preferential treatment. Competing for a job is one thing, signing up to get screwed is another...
