CFP Thread: Oregon vs Ohio State

Pipe dream and never going to happen, but I'd be thrilled if the Broncos could somehow end up with Mariota or Cardale as their future QB....and I don't mean in 14 years when they are at the tail end of their H.O.F. career.

I think we need to tap the brakes a bit on Cardale. He was third string for a reason. His body of work is pretty limited right now. There could be some flaws in his game that just haven't been exposed yet. Mariota is a different story. He's played the game at a very high level for several years.

If the Broncos can get Mariota, they should. It would add a whole different dimension to the Denver offense. It would be fun to watch, IMO. I don't know if he falls that far in the first round, though.

I don't see Mariota succeeding in the NFL. Not enough pocket ability

Marcus Mariota compared to Russell Wilson in college.

Mariota is obviously far, far better. The better question is how did Wilson achieve what he did given those INT numbers.

Actually, if you really dig into the numbers, Mariota is the better quaterback - at least at the college level. His yards per attempt - which is supposedly a statistic that helps even out other variables, is two yards better than Wilson's. How that translates to the pro level is anybody's guess, but statistically, Mariota was a better college QB than Wilson in virtually every category.

I'd love to have Mariota as the Denver QB.

I've listened to Trent Dilfer talk a few times about analyzing college QB's for the pros. He talked about throwing out nearly all of the film because most of it is just pitch-and-catch and first read. He said that the NFL scouts (the good ones) try to boil the film down the the set of plays where the college QB has to go through his progressions or try to get a ball into tight coverage. He had some really good film on Mariota that showed how his accuracy suffers when he has to move through his progressions quickly, pick up the receiver and get it there fast.

His conclusion was that Mariota can be a very good NFL QB but needs a year or two to develop and can't just be thrown into the mix.

Exactly. All these spread QBs in college make 1 read and throw. They lock in on one guy way too often and that's why you don't see them succeed as often, if ever, in the NFL. I like what Mariota brings and would definitely roll the dice on him, but don't expect him to do anything as a rookie. He's a developmental guy that needs a year or two for sure.

Someone will take him early.

GM's may want to pass on him with early picks, but I bet there are a handful of owners who see him putting butts in the seats.

Good think for Mariotta that Kelly is in charge of all that at Philly...doesn't need the GM

NCs: Colorado 1, Oregon 0

Still the number of titles the ducks have.

Its like what the N stands for with the fuskers. I am glad our current conference dick head provides us with a reminder of their ineptitude on their helmets. I was cheering for the ducks, but I am ok with the outcome just because.

Oregon was out-coached. I hope the rest of the Pac 12 paid attention (only 6 in the box, spread safeties and rotation on the D-Line). Of course, that strategy required depth that CU lacks on the D-line and linebacker position, but it shows a way to crack the Oregon offense.

I admit I wanted Oregon to win last night, but their loss isn't exactly sending me into fits of rage. It's nice to still have something they don't.

It was very gratifying, and not at all surprising, to see a top Big 10 team crush a top PAC 12 team in the big game. Some ABers think they have to suck up to this conference just because the Buffs are in it. The only team that's reliably great when it's great is USC. JMHO.

**** Oregon, and their Harley riding Donald Duck. Glad to see those ****ty fans lose another one. Only time I have ever rooted for OSU besides when they beat Miami for the MNC.

Strange agenda. Glad to see you return when you feel vindicated.

Oregon's result against FSU was very inconsistent with your world view, and I'd argue that even with last night's loss, the PAC came out smelling like roses in out-of-conference play this season.

You won't admit it, but the PAC is the real deal.

It's real if you want to watch a bunch of 49-42 type games with high junk stat QBs who will wash out in the pros after 3-5 years, Andrew Luck excepted. I have no agenda, just some observations. Still don't know why the suck-up here to the Pac 12. The next time a Pac 12 team wins an NC it will likely be USC with a very balanced offense, a great defense, and a different coach. I do think that ASU is headed for some consistent top 10 rankings over the next few years too, and Stanford will be respectable more often than not. It's a pretty good, but not great, conference.

No conference was "great" this year, so I don't disagree with your last sentence. The rest of what you said is either personal preference, or stupid and myopic.

Zona used the 3X3 front alignment a lot when they upset the quacks in Eugene this year. Didn't watch much of the ccg rematch so I don't know what the pussies did or how the quacks countered.

Gotta think urban and the gang used film of the first game to define their D game play.

I didn't say that any conference was "great" this year, that would be nuts. I do have a personal preference not to watch too much "basketball-on-grass", so maybe you're right. Again, why do we have too like the conference? What's that about?

It's our conference, and the level of play validates us to some degree (when we actually win games). But maybe it's because I'm from the west coast, and have more affiliation with the teams, but I find the games entertaining, and the quality of play high in recent years.

Why do you have to like the other conferences (or one in particular) is actually the question that is harder to answer.

I listened to my first Buff game on the radio in 1967 and saw my first live one in 1970. Bias toward Big8/12 I guess. Thought the classic Notre Dame vs Mich State game in the 60s which I think ended 6-3 was the best. In baseball I'm all in to pitcher's duels that end 2-1 and hockey that ends 1-0 with each goalie having 35 saves. Revealed - a massive irrational bias towards defense.

So you're a big Stanford fan?

I'm hugely loyal to the Big 8. I loved our conference. I hated the Big 12, which makes it a lot easier to love the PAC 12 for me.

But what I'm hearing mostly is that you have a unique preference and keep wondering why the rest of us don't share it?

This 100%. It's also nice that we were so successful and finished on top in the Big 8. And now it's gone so no one can ever make comparisons regarding us and them.

My second favorite team in Pac 12 will always be Stanford. I have no unique preference, just not in love with Pac 12 over any other conference, and have a consistent urge to reach for the channel changer whenever a college game goes past 3.75 hours and 75 total points, more or less, regardless of the conference. I'm not looking for converts, just stating an opinion. Just a preference, as in: I don't like strippers with purple wigs and astrology tattoos. Like my Damn Sisters !!
