From the BDC. I know it´s in the news room, but I think this deserves its own thread on the main board as it could get lost in the news room. And kudos to SJBuff and AtlBuff who broke the Hawaii and WVU stories early for us.

Buffs to play Mountaineers
CU close to completing nonconference football schedules through 2013

Dienstag, Juni 26, 2007

University of Colorado officials have reached agreements with future opponents in football, completing the program's nonconference schedules through the 2013 season, the Camera has learned.

The Buffs are sticking to their long-held tradition of playing the best of the best by adding a home- and-home series with West Virginia for the 2008 and 2009 seasons. CU also will host Eastern Washington in 2008 and play a four-game series with Hawaii in the 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2015 seasons.

CU will host the Mountaineers in the first meeting between the programs in September 2008 and travel to Morgantown, W.V., in September 2009. The Mountaineers have become a perennial power in the Big East Conference in recent years and are regularly ranked in both top-25 polls.

The series replaces a previous agreement that called for the Buffs to play North Carolina during the same seasons.

North Carolina elected to make a coaching change following last season and new coach Butch Davis decided to opt out of the series with the Buffs. North Carolina must pay CU $100,000 in damages, according to the game contract.

Sources said Colorado officials offered to forgive the $100,000 payment in exchange for an agreement to play a home-and-home series against the Tar Heels in men's basketball, but UNC turned down the idea.

Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn said he can't comment on incomplete negotiations, but he acknowledged his department is close to announcing future football schedule changes and additions.

"Our schedule for 2008 is not complete although we're encouraged by the progress we're making," Bohn said. "We're extremely excited about continuing to provide our fans with great opponents and a fun atmosphere in Folsom Field."

The addition of West Virginia to the schedule adds another college football heavyweight to the lineup of strong programs now scheduled to visit Folsom Field over the next decade. CU already has scheduled games or series with programs such as Georgia, California, Oregon, Washington and LSU.

The Buffs will face Florida State at home this season and play at Arizona State.

The 2008 home game against Eastern Washington will be the first meeting with that program and only the second game CU has played against a Division I-AA opponent. The Buffs were beaten by Montana State last season in coach Dan Hawkins' Boulder debut in what was the first meeting in CU history with a I-AA opponent.

Scheduling a pair of road trips to Hawaii in 2011 and 2015 leaves open the possibility that the Buffs could play a 13th regular season game in those years. The NCAA allows programs that are willing to make the long road trip to Hawaii to play an extra game. CU could turn the opportunity into a seventh home game in those seasons, creating a significant extra stream of revenue if it chooses.

CU has been aggressive in reworking its future football schedules since Bohn was hired two years ago. The program has games scheduled as far out as the 2018 season and is only a few games shy of having the future nonconference schedule completed through 2015.

I like the idea of WVU and Hawaii.
Great exposure to recruiting bases by scheduling.
Don't know much about Eastern Washington, hopefully not an upset in the making.

That would have been awesome. Oh well.

Eastern Washington is D II aren't they? While I like the idea of two "real" OOC opponents, CSU and a patsy, the last time CU did that it didn't work out so well.

I didn't realize playing Hawaii in Hawaii meant you could squeek in another home game that season! That's a good deal for the revenue situation of the AD but those will be some loooong seasons for our buffs with the potential of them having to play 15 games (13 regular season, 1 ccg and 1 bowl).

That's been the rule for as long as I can remember. The idea being that because it costs so much to go to the islands, you need to provide some kind of inducement for teams to travel there. I hadn't heard that the rule changed after the expansion to 12 regular season games, so I guess it's still in effect.

I like the schedule, unfortunately that 100k in damages is spoken for with our NCAA sanction.

It's like that Seinfeld episode where he always finds what he loses. Elane threw a $20 bill out the window and he found another one in his pocket.

Perfect.

you think!?!?!!!?!

That kind of scheduling is going to keep the Buffs around 7-5 every year.

Hogwash. That kind of scheduling is what we had when we won a national title in 1990 and nearly another one in 1994.

If you want to be the man, you got to beat the man. I love it. Bring em on.

In 1990 and 1994 -- CU was the man.

CU is the bitch now. This scheduling is folly. Nobody else schedules like this. When you already have to play Nebraska every year, and either OU or Texas every year - not to mention the rest of the teams of the Big 12 -- it is assinine to play this kind of schedule.

I don't mind playing the name teams, but you can't make a living playing two or three nationally ranked teams every season OOC. I know we need to make money, but going 8-4 every year doesn't help matters.

I think you living a decade and a half behind sacky. CU isnt even close to sniffing the athletes you and I recall seeing each week. We need to be a little more realistic in our approach and our climb back to elite status. Nothing wrong with being ambitious, but you gotta add some reality to it. jmho

btw- Im not fearful of playing the horses, but you gotta have some of your own to run with. Nor do I expect to win those races each time. Line up and beat the folks you should. Line up against an even foe, play your best, and let the ball bounce where it does. Thats all I ask. 50-50 in those instances.

What the hell is the matter with you guys? Mac scheduled tough teams long before he had the horses to run with them. To him it didn't matter. Plus, I'd rather get my nose bloody in the OOC so that we're better prepared for the speed of teams like UT and OU.

yep, we were pretty low when Hawk got here, but not as low when Mac got here. We lost to Drake TWICE at home under Chucky, that is fricken low.

Remember when everybody wanted our AD's head after he extended Mac's contract after a 1-10 season? Who was our AD then? Crowder? Marolt? Gee?

Well, with this kind of schedule we are much like an SEC team. All the bitching you hear from the SEC fans about beating up on each other week after week making it tough to win a national title. Whatever.... ****in bring it. :slayer:

Unfortunately- most of the teams who play that kind of OOC schedule get broken legs, busted knees, shoulder injuries, etc. -- much much worse than just a bloody nose.

Ask Bob Stoops how worthwhile his trip to Oregon was this past year. Got the royal screw-job from the refs and possibly lost a chance at another national title game by playing in Oregon.

Take a look at the out of conference schedule of the elite teams in college football. Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio State, Florida, LSU, etc. Sure - they will play a tough game every once in a while --- but generally only 1 tough non-conference opponent, with the rest of them being pretty much cupcakes.

OU's OOC in 2007 -- North Texas, Utah State and Tulsa-- with U. of Miami sandwiched in there.

Texas' OOC in 2007 -- Arkansas State, TCU, UCF and Rice.

Check it out Helmet.... If the Buffs play Miami(OH) and West Virginia back to back weeks, I'm thinking we're gonna have to do a mini road trip to the southeast.

Nebraska is barely a top 25 team anymore. OU and UT are the teams to watch out for in conference. The north is pathetic and has been waiting for someone to step up and own it for awhile now.

As I posted earlier. The mid tier teams that used to be easily scheduled cannon fodder aren't as willing anymore to schedule unless they get a least one game at their house. The trend is that they want a home-away-home series. Who wants to play Western Michigan in Kalamazoo? Their stadium holds like 15,000 people. More and more BCS teams are having to play each other to avoid the three game scenario. This is partly why NU is now playing the USCs of the world when historicaly they would not have.

I don't hear Hawkins complaining about the schedule. Of course, I may have missed it. I prefer the Bobby Bowden phrase; "we will play anyone, anywhere, anytime."

Bring it!
