Candidates for CU Regent 2016

Buffnik

Real name isn't Nik

Junta Member
I figured the AB members would be interested in some quick profiles of those running.

We have 3 seats on the 9-member CU Regent Board up for election. 1st District (Denver + parts of JeffCo & ArapahoeCo), 4th District (DouglasCO) and At-Large.

AllBuffs is non-partisan. It is also a CU sports message board, so the driving issue is the candidate's support level for CU athletics. On that issue, Lucky Vidmar in District 1 is a no-brainer, Sue Sharkey in District 4 has strongly earned another term, and in the at-large race both candidates are supportive of athletics with Ganahl being more strongly vocal about it but either seeming like they would be supporters on the Board of CU athletics initiatives.

Here are your candidates:

1st Congressional District

Lucky Vidmar (D)
He has posted here and we know he's a strong supporter of CU Athletics.
He's @Lucky Vidmar on AllBuffs.

John "Jack" Kroll (D)
Here is the opening of his website's statement of his positions on issues:
As Regent, I will:

Build up our students, not our stadiums. The recent football stadium renovation and expansion has cost nearly $160-million, which is more than what the university spent on financial aid across all four campuses last year.

4th Congressional District

Suzanne "Sue" Sharkey (R) - Incumbent
Chair of Capital Improvements Subcommittee & part of 9-0 vote to approve the Athletic Facilities Plan.
Her statement about her vote:
In attending Pac-12 Conference football games over the past several years – CU has been a Pac-12 member since 2011 – Regent Sue Sharkey said she became aware of a facilities upgrades from “seeing cranes all over the place” at football stadiums. “We need to get it done and we need to get it done now,” she said.

Bob Owens (D)
I could find almost nothing about him besides his bio on the DougCO Dems page.

CU Regent At-Large

Heidi Ganahl (R)
She summed up her position on what AllBuffs cares about today:

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hganahl
Website: http://heidiganahl.com/

Alice Madden (D)
Definitely a CU sports fan (got engaged at a CU football game).
Twitter: https://twitter.com/Madden4CU
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/madden4cu/
Website: http://www.madden4cu.com/

Heidi is extremely pro CU, she donates a ton, is active with a couple of different programs and is a former business school board member. She would make a great regent.

Let's just make sure Kroll the troll loses.
This.

If you live in the 1st district, vote against him and tell your friends, family & neighbors to vote against him.

Luckily it's pretty easy to remember the name of the guy you and they should be voting for.

I did reach out to Alice to see if she could give a comment, and she did respond that she will provide some feedback for us.

Should we move this to the football forum? Cause it's not our usual political nonsense, it's important. Jack Kroll or Lucky Vidmar are my choices, so I think I know how I'm gonna vote

A redirect thread should be put into the most popular forums to bring people to this thread. It should also be highlighted on the front page, etc.

I know I'm beating a drum many of you have heard before, but getting the right regents elected is, quite simply, the biggest impact thing you can do to help CU. So do it.

Also, I just managed to get a vote for Lucky, even though I don't live there - an email from one of my best friends: "I will happily vote for Lucky for you! I actually received the ballot and a flyer on Lucky yesterday. I may not vote for anything else this year."

I was going to make a snarky comment about how bad things are when we have to depend on Snow to make the right choice in the voting booth.

However, this is actually kind of important. The only guy we really need to make sure gets defeated is Kroll. If you live in the first CD, and you're registered Democrat (and who isn't in that district?) do the right thing.

Living in Boulder, my only vote will be for At-Large. But I'm going to do what I can to support other Regent candidates who value athletics at CU. We do have a voice here. It's important that we use it and make it very clear that when a Regent candidate understands the importance of athletic excellence at CU that this political position brings a significant bloc of positive publicity, votes and donations.

I live in the 4th. Sue Sharkey has been a good Regent as far as I know. She's seeking a second term and has been around through the recent AD expansion. I don't recall hearing any objections coming from her. The 4th is like the 1st, only in reverse. She doesn't have a Republican opponent in the primary, so she should be a shoe-in. Not a lot of Democrats on the Eastern Plains.

SIAP but looks like Kroll beat Vidmar.

"I look forward to serving the students of Colorado in order to make the CU system more accessible and affordable to all," Kroll posted on his campaign Facebook page. "I will fight to make make sure we don't spend more money on renovating the football stadium than we do on financial aid for students."

**** you!

Calm down, you guys...
Favorite thing about CU-Boulder: Football games (especially seeing Ralphie run) are a great way to wind down from a busy week of work and study.

Jack is an avid fan of all Colorado sports teams, but is exceptionally passionate about the Colorado Rockies and CU Buff basketball. He also enjoys reading, yoga and backpacking.

I guess he's just mad we didn't renovate the basketball stadium?

I will fight to make make sure we don’t spend more money on renovating the football stadium than we do on financial aid for students. I was criticized for misrepresenting the stadium issue but the fact of the matter is if the football team doesn’t improve, and make the money back, then the students are on the hook for it
Can someone explain how this is the case for the renovations?

He loves CU football so much he wants to gut the program.

Swell. Just goes to show you can never depend on Democrats to do the right thing.

What a f'ing moron. He thinks there's this giant pile of money that can be divided up between facilities upgrades and student financial aid. How on Gods Green Earth did this idiot get elected?
