Is it safe to assume that Rick George bid up the value of JL to a point where Oregon offered crazy money for a defensive coordinator?
Or is the reference about "opportunity of a lifetime" specific to his time in Boulder?

It was a moment in time. A single data point doesn't make it a trend.

Unless specifically asked about an individual assistant, you will almost never hear a head coach at any level of the game specifically and consistently mention an assistant coach's name and the kind of job they're doing to the media. Period.

The ego clash commentary does make a degree of sense.
JL used to be a head coach and was a very successful one. If he hadn't had an incredibly bad moment of judgement and temper resulting in the incident with striking a player he would have remained there until he (likely a short time later) got the opportunity to be a HC at a larger program where he also likely would have had success.
In his mind he should have been looked at like a guy capable of making HC decisions and deserving of credit for those decisions. In M2's mind JL was a very good coach but was an assistant and a part of his staff, not a guy to set apart from his staff. The fact that M2 comes from a defensive background means that he isn't willing to just turn over the defense to somebody else. He is going to be involved and make decisions, much more so than he does on offense.
For JL the Oregon offer had to be hard to even consider passing up. If he is successful it will be his second team in a row to make a massive turn around. The salary alone means that he will be getting more attention and recognition than he got at CU.
In his mind the Duck's job is a stepping stone for a quick return to the head coaching world. If it works out he is there 1-2 years and is back into a head job. If the turn around doesn't happen that quickly he gets to collect the kind of money that is comparable to at least a lot of G5 coaches.

They had a fine working relationship. Styles are different so they butted heads a bit on that, but both are professionals who understood their roles and the chain of command. It was functional, as evidenced by the success they had. I'm believing that it had run its course, though, and that this was a good time to go separate ways.
