Christian McCaffery blows of Stanford bowl game

Outside of a few marquee programs, college football in general are money losers, if not for subsidies from student fees and university general funding, many programs would not be viable.

Many "non-rev" sports like track or women's volleyball don't turn profits.

Certainly most football programs outside the P5 struggle to turn a profit.

Using your logic about the sometimes upside down economics of Bowl Games and applying it more broadly, it begs the question, "why should college football players bother to play at all?" Why even have college athletics?

The thing about college football is that it's not purely a business calculation. It is also a cultural treasure and perhaps even a religion.

People do things that are culturally important and religiously meaningful as a matter of the heart.

When you have the opportunity to start on a P5 team in a bowl game, it is an honor.

There are plenty of other venues in our society which balance sheets and cash flow statements are celebrated. Football is an escape for all that for many of us.
You need to get with the times. I can't stand when people refer to football as a religion. Time to get your priorities straight if you look at football that way.

Who is ignoring reality?
You, for ignoring it's legitimate, rational and fair for the world athletes live in. And especially for college athletes who have families and kids, I would say the ****ty thing is to actually play a bowl game and risk their potential future.

Yeah! Only in church can you gather once a week along with your fellow enthusiasts (some would say zealots) and collectively sing songs of admiration and loyalty while breaking bread with others in celebration. Oh wait. Well, at least our songs are drastically different than religious...oh wait.

Hail, all hail our alma mater
Ever will our hearts be true
You will live with us forever
Loyal will we be to you
We sing forever your praises
Evermore our love renew
Pledge our whole devotion to you
Dear old CU.

I would tell you to reprioritize if religiton was important you, too.

Satire aside, this is exactly what Tom Herman did this year and it probably cost Houston, the seniors and their fans the bowl game. But that's just business, amirite???
You don't need to be a dick just because Tom Herman is one too.

Out of curiosity, how do you propose everyone should look at it?

Man, lots of people here who espouse loyalty above all else. I am sure no one has left an employer for a better job, moved to a better neighborhood, broken up with someone, etc., etc., etc.... Fact is all people make decisions for their own interests, seems really hypocritical to feign outrage.

If football is your religion fine, but people should be allowed to decide for themselves.

I'm just curious as to where the uproar was over Herman's decision.

Are you seriously not seeing why McCaffery generates more interest and response on a University of Colorado athletics board, or are you just trying to make a point?

I thought this was a general discussion about high profile collegiate athletes making a decision about their futures that is in their best interests. I didn't realize this conversation was limited to McCaffrey.

Your previous comment, "I'm just curious as to where the uproar was over Herman's decision," seemed like a passive rebuke of those who had an awful lot to say about McCaffery's decision, but did not express similar objections to other, similar decisions by other parties. My query was an attempt to discern whether or not you were sincerely befuddled by that. It seems you were not.

Its a game. In the end, the games nor these kids' decisions effect any of us in any way. Watch it for entertainment, but its not something one should lose sleep over or get emotional about.

You are correct. I am not ignorant to why McCaffrey is taking the brunt of the criticism on this board. I am, however, bringing up a legitimate point about why people are criticizing these kids who aren't being paid and not criticizing coaches for doing the same thing.

Parcheesi is a game. Tic-Tac-Toe is a game.

Football is so much more than just a game. There is passion, commitment, life long fanatics. Football is a way of life.

It's a common bond that have brought you and me and everyone else reading this together.

Not get emotional about football? Pfffft.
YDTYFSE.

If you don't think college football is something you shouldn't lose sleep over or get emotional about you shouldn't be on this board. What an incredibly ironic and unintelligent comment. Just in case you haven't quite realized it yet, you're on a college football message board. We dont give a **** about the NFL and how much you make there, we only care about what you did in college. Either commit to playing all the games or skip school and train for the NFL.

No.... football is just a game. Just speaking the truth. I don't care that much about the NFL, and I used to get emotional about sports. Then I grew up and realized there are 1,000,000 things worth getting emotional about, and sports aren't one of them. I feel bad for you if you view sports as more than entertainment if you're not playing.

Bows out of. Or blows off.

Faulty syntax in the headline aside, he also misspelled the kid's last name. And that error has been repeated incessantly throughout the thread by others. I mean, if you're going to criticize his career choices, you might want to spell his name correctly. It's not like his dad has been a fixture in Denver sports for a couple of decades or so ... amirite?

It's McCaffrey, not McCaffery ... it's not that ****ing hard people.

Is it safe to assume you are neither a season ticket holder not a booster? Do you not want to invest in helping give CU athletes every chance to put their talents on display on the biggest stage? Does your chest not fill with joy when the Buffs win a game?

If not, then I feel bad for you.

How the **** do you know they aren't being paid? Give me a break. Mac doesn't need the money anyway and it's a bitch move.
