Official Coaching Search Thread

Ok, so you need O and D to win a championship. Got it.

What if OSU has asked Urbam meyer to step down after this season due to his issues that had him benched this season? What if they promote Day and WE grab Meyer?

This convo has taken a turn. I can summarize all my thoughts on the matter real quick:

1) Obviously, coupling a good O with a good D is the best scenario, and most championship-level teams have both.
2) However, rule changes generally benefit offense.
3) Offensive speed commonly seen nowadays benefit offenses; with so many possessions, usually a few will hit even if you're facing a good D.
4) How many teams in the last few years have risen to the top 10 with an amazing offense and a **** defense? How much of the inverse is true?
5) So: both are needed, but if you happen to have only one, offense is the answer.

We have started to turn on each other now. That usually signifies the end is near.

I will reply to myself and just have my own conversation.

I did decide to give 247 a try for this search and those guys are bat **** crazy. I thought we had issues over here but those guys are certifiable. I think they turned on each other at the start of this search.

Take the NFL. I don’t think you will ever see a team win again like say the Ravens did. Suffocating defense while Dilfer hands the ball off. The game has changed and the rule changes benefit the offense.

You need a good defense though to be successful to support your offense.
You basically keep saying the same things. We get your opinions .Please contribute by backing them up with some.evidence or anything?

college football is on cycles. Once a D coordinator figures out how to stop these zone read offenses? then it will revert to defensive. Then an offensive coordinator will recreate the new offensive scheme.
t-bone
veer
I bone
triple option
wing
run and shoot
air raid
I back
zone read

I can see both sides of the offense vs defense argument. One thing I’ve always thought and still do is it’s much easier to find a good OC than DC. There’s always a young wunderkind who can run a high flying offense. That’s why I tend to lean defense for the head coach. Just my opinion

Name a team in the NFL that is currently successful running a defensive oriented team? Hell name one that you would be confident in them stopping Goff or Mahomes from throwing 4-6 TDs?

Or if watching football didn’t tip you off here are some stats and you can see yearly scoring on the incline:

I didn’t have those numbers previously I just determined it through TV and using my eyes.

The NFL is not relevant to a college football coaching search.

How many college championships did Goff and Mahomes win?

You replied to my post using the NFL as an example of how the game changed. So I used those numbers. I am sure if the CFB data exists you would find a similar pattern. I don’t care enough to google it at the moment though.

For the top four, a big maybe.

I realize you view anything short of the playoff a failure, but that is not the case. You can have a wildly successful season without making the playoff.
I don't view it as a failure. I was referring to holic's post pointing out the rankings of the top 4

???

We are not hiring a NFL... so who cares?

My point was that all levels of football have changed. If you think you are watching the same game you were 10, 15, 20 years ago....I don’t know what to tell you.

High school, CFB, and the NFL are all scoring more. I cannot confirm pee wee as my kid is not old enough yet so I have not attended.

Saying all levels have changed is a throwaway statement. So... cool?

Agree with this. I cannot forget CU not keeping up with the offenses in the Big 12 especially the mid-2000s and I think it cost CU dearly especially when we went with Embree. When Embree was in the process of switching it was too little too late at the time. That is why I would be very happy with a Ryan Day hire. If we do hire a defensive minded coach, the first question that is asked should be about the offense.

Rams I think and their D is horrible
What's very interesting to me about the Rams is that we may just be looking at defense the wrong way. Statistically, that was one of the top defenses in the NFL 2 years ago. Then they changed the offense. Do those players on D now suck? Seems to me that they're doing exactly what they need to do on defense to win football games.

Just like the Oklahoma and Ohio State defenses are doing exactly what they need to do to win football games. We're talking about 11-1 teams here, folks. The defenses aren't as garbage as people think. Lots of talent in both places.

To put it another way: 62-36 was not a bad defensive showing by the Buffs.

Hasn't the rules in both college and the pros helped slant the game towards the offense ? I don't see this changing.

So Ohio State purposely let Penn State drive deep to stop them on 4th down and they purposely let the Maryland game to get to OT to win 52-51? Next level defense for sure.

I would also point out Oklahoma lost to Texas this season in large part to defense. Next level thinking to angle for a rematch?

Probably not the right choice of words. They suck compared to defense as I grew up understanding it.

Today if you force some turnovers and slow the other team you are a solid unit. But the rules are so much in the O favor that the D is more restricted then previously.

I don’t know why some are arguing this so much. It is evident. If your pinky touches the QB helmet it is roughing the passer now.

I have said that but then ppl tell me to prove it. It is a circular battle.

The rules have changed. They have benefited offenses.

The "prove it" part is people skeptical that the game has so dramatically changed that you can mostly ignore defense by putting forth the two extreme outliers in Ohio State and OU as conclusive proof.
