Reality Check.

Bobo called a heck of a game and gave his team a chance to win based on excellent play calling

CU played the cleanest game they have in YEARS. Very few penalties, no turnovers, no delay of games, no PI penalties, no subbing errors etc. I have to think back to the the late season games in the early 2000’s to remember such a well coached effort. Very disciplined and clean football.

Jay Johnson has installed an excellent college offense that allows the players to make plays. We are in great shape with him calling plays. For the first time in years, I don’t hear clown music when I watch out offense.

Montez still can’t read a defense but probably has the raw talent to win 6 games this year. Not an NFL QB.

We need to protect the perimeter better on defense, but overall I’m gonna give this effort a solid B/B+. It is clear to me that we have a GREAT coach that will get his team to a six win season.

For the first time in years I see a team that isn’t going to beat itself. That is a HUGE improvement over the past two decades.

Well, there was that 1 PI on Blackmon. However, solid post.

I think there are things that will corrected this coming week. HC will see to that.

Love that we won but let's not sugar coat it. Defense was abysmal. We won't win many games without substantial improvement... Particularly covering flair passes to RBs out of the backfield and receivers on crossing patterns. Landman was not the dude he has been.... Almost always a step behind covering receivers. Offense was fun to watch, though.

I’m going to research this and get back. It seems like it’ll take some statistical compiling for league wide averages.
Major variable: SEC offenses may not be as good as other conferences, boosting the defensive statistics. I’ve watched too many bowl games/non-con games where the other team is magically competitive with SEC teams to think there’s a major gap. Maybe the SEC is overall better but not by much and certainly not by enough to where bringing in coaches from that conference will be the magic ingredient to transforming a team. If MT makes the Buffs better, it’s because he’s a damn good coach. Not because he learned some magic formula from his 4 years in the SEC coaching under recruiting juggernauts.

To me, the biggest red flags were from missed tackles. Landman, for instance, got embarrassed on 3 chunk plays from csu when he could’ve made play saving tackles.

For sure. There was one in particular that was so awful I had to look twice to make sure it was him.

At the same time, it seemed like on all of those plays he or someone else was out of position and he was scrambling to get to the runner, and didn't have time to break down properly.

Can someone explain to me whether Landman was just out of position/confused, or is the defense schematically different that doesn't allow him to fly to the ball? He was in on most tackles last year, in the back field all day. He was no where tonight.

We’ve discussed this argument before. The schools in question become recruiting juggernauts when they have the right coaches in place. As you know being a UF fan, if the coaches are meh, recruits will still come in, but they won’t be the same level. The performance suffers.

I don’t think the argument about comparatively better offenses works either. SEC teams magically beat the **** out of Pac 12 teams and score at will.

Again, it’ll take data. Right now, we’re just guessing based upon impressions and biases.

On those 3 plays, he was in position. He just whiffed or took horrid angles.

First of all, I was happy that I was able to stay awake to see the game. Surprising was being able to magically awaken when the delayed game started. Perhaps it's a sign.

- Absolutely thrilled by the use of TEs in the game. To have the first score to a TE, on a perfectly placed pass and nice catch speaks volumes about where this team has changed.

- Transfers made a meaningful impact... the aforementioned TD and Safety Onu for sure. I'm sure there were more transfers that I didn't realize provided positive contribution.

- Turnovers were the hallmark of defensive effort and possession a focus of the offense. Emphasis placed on turnovers was not lost on the team. Made the difference in last night's game.

- Emphasis on the running game paid huge dividends in the 4th quarter. HCMT wanted to be a team that imposed its will in the 4th qtr... we saw that last night. Anybody else notice his admonition to the offensive back-ups in cleanup duty... "Finish...finish!" Honestly, I was concerned during the 1st quarter, not seeing a whole lot of offensive push, but they were consistent with the run focus and it showed over time.

- Sadly the defense showed its weaknesses, like others have said, they looked confused often and played slow. Playmakers like Landman we've grown to expect greatness from didn't deliver on that expectation. Martinez may give them fits next week because he also has the ability to run; we didn't see that threat last night. The poor coverage on RBs always seemed to put this D in a dilemma. At least they can see where they stand, with no impact to the W/L columns.

- Offensively, I was hoping for Montez to be better. He seems to miss relatively easy passes then next thing you know, he is throwing an NFL type narrow window pass. Those scare me honestly, makes me question his decision making, but you can't question his arm strength; wish he would set his feet better though.

Anyway, live another day, learn and improve I guess.

I know... TLDR... but football is back I could'nt help it. :)

So of you fans are insufferable and these live threads remind me why I don't post in the football forum much. One would think we are the worse football team in the country reading this thread.
Just on defense and for good reason. We forced one punt against a CSU team that went 3-9 last year. Guys were out of position on seemingly every play, Landman looked JAGy, our CBs were as below average as we thought, Wells and Van Diest looked lost, and our DL was getting pushed back at the point of attack.

I’m usually not one to ride the emotional wave like that, but it was ugly from the start for the defense, and it was/is extremely concerning.

Definitely looked like players were just lost/ confused. Need to simplify the defense for now.

It was taken completely out of context though.
My thought too. Their only attempt to tie together context was when they said that MT as a DC for UGA, used that message to recruits. What he said was a blinding flash of the obvious of the prevailing opinion (perhaps not fact) that the PAC12 knows and competes against every day.

So, tell me again how many playoff teams the PAC12 has contributed to the new format?

Game basically played out as Adam predicted. CSU hit on plays and got their offense moving, but CU still just better. CU has questions about the secondary. Colin Hill was very good.

I was surprised at our lack of QB pressure and LB play in the first half. Montez continued his inconsistent play. RBs, TEs and WRs showed very well.

Still, CSU showed why this game is so dangerous. After 4 years or losing, some in epic beat down fashion, they came out as fired up as we have seen in awhile. And credit Bobo for getting them in position to capitalize on that.... But ultimately that wasn't going to carry them all game.
