Karl Dorrell officially named Colorado HC

Average at CU is the best we're gonna get and we have to be ok with that. Sure he was ok at UCLA and an NFL assistant forever. He also had one year in the SEC were his offense went 0-8 and was fired. All in all we are going to be ok, average and maybe even get to a bowl game. We still live in Colorado so that's cool. Rick George is cool average dude.

See ya then! As I've said, Karl Dorrell is a solid football coach and (more importantly) a man of high character. He'll have a plan to fill the holes we've got on staff with high energy guys who can recruit-If he doesn't, we're not talking about him as our new head football coach.
 
The more I think about it, this sucks really. Seems like a really good guy and all that, just doesn't do it for me and can't understand how this hire makes sense for anyone in buff nation.

High character guy who'll get us 6ish wins every year with the occasional 10. Sounds like a slightly upgraded Mikemac to me. Remember during the search last year when RG said he wanted a championship level coach? I guess he gave up on that dream

Remember when we were all making fun of CSU for hiring a dude who was just as mediocre? This is embarrassing for us

Who was available at this moment who could be a proven winner? Every one mentioned is a gamble.

I’m sorry to be such an asshole, but you guys have 3 winning seasons in the last 15 years. Where is this reluctant 6 wins with the occasional 10 wins coming from?

Why did CU need to take a risk? Are you one of those people who loses several hands of poker and thinks if you bet more money you’ll win.

Also, he was OC at Vanderbilt which is never going to be able to compete with the blue blood programs in the SEC. Vandy’s best offense was probably Jay Cutler running for his life and making plays.

Steve Sarkisian is an alcoholic that got fired for drinking on the job at his last HC job—-and then sued the school for wrongful termination. He also apparently thinks OC at Alabama is a better job than HC at Colorado, so **** him.

Grinch is a defensive coordinator in the Big 12 that made marginal improvements to a bad defense. I guess he’s an up and coming name but he is unproven. He also didn’t even pick up the phone for WSU, so might not have been interested.

But in any event, CU didn’t need a risky hire they needed someone competent and capable. Something as simple as putting together a staff can be a difficult task on short notice way late in the process.

Most of us have been around long enough to see the potential this program has with the right coach(ie not hawkins or embree). 6 win seasons are fine short term but long term we want to compete for Pac12 championships at least

No I'm not suprised, in fact I do know and agree it's bull crap that it's like that. I want the best man for CU to lead the team, and I'm broken hearted that Mel isn't that person. My post had nothing to do with this though, CU and the team is what's most important here for me. My question was do you think he still has connections to the high schools? I don't know myself

Feel however you want.

But I personally think we should reserve judgment until we see what happens with this recruiting class, the vision he lays out in his press conference, and the staff he puts together.

I’m pretty confident Rick George and Lance Carl weren’t just picking names out of a hat, so he must’ve made a pretty good case to them. I’m definitely interested to hear about the vision that sold them.

And karl dorrell did climb the ladder. He went from a college wr coach for about 5 years to being an excellent offensive coordinator for cu and washington to qualifying for 5 straight bowls as a head coach(with the worst facilities in the pac qp at the time), before he got fired for not meeting dan guerrero’s expectation that ucla win 10 games in 2007. He then spent the last 13 years as a highly regarded position coach in the nfl. If you want to hold it against him that he never got bumped up to oc in the pros, I would respectfully suggest that you take a look at the guys who get one nfl coordinator gig after another regardless of how mediocre their results and ask yourself what they have in common with each other, and what they don't have in common with karl dorrell.

I am only asking, nothing more so sorry it came off that way. If Karl is our coach I'll stand shoulder to shoulder with him just as always except CF I couldn't with him. I was hoping for someone a little more connected with college ball is all, here is hoping he crushes it and the rest of the PAC.

UCLA fired KD in '07. He has been an OC one season since that time at Vanderbilt. Let that sink in.

That’s understandable, but why do you think the ****ing WR coach of the Dolphins is about to casually change the culture of the last 15 years? You guys SHOULD be competing for and winning conference championships on a yearly basis. I just don’t see a positive result coming here. I feel like this is a rushed, “well we gotta hire SOMEBODY!” hire by the Colorado administration and I don’t think it gives you guys what you deserve. You’re not a ridiculously passionate fanbase, but you guys deserve better than 3-9 and I’m afraid that’s all you’re gonna get. The PAC-12 is RIPE for the taking, but Colorado isn’t in the business of winning. Enjoy mediocrity for the next 15-20 years.

I'm warming up here...slowly. What about the 0-8 in SEC as his last college stint. That scares me because the game has changed a lot since his college coaching days.
 
Easy way to rate this hire is to ask yourself a question.

You're hiring for a senior management position. Your friend of 25 years was a great line employee, got hired as a senior manager and took 2 successful units and made them close shop due to his inept leadership. Since then he had been a decent line employee again. Do you decide since to hire him as your most senior leader?

KD was his position coach at CU and apparently gave him the best advice he has ever received, so it seems like he’d be the most likely coach Chev would stay here for.

But we’ll see, I guess.
