Graduating: Kin, D'Shawn, Dallas, Horne, Daniels, Strating

Incoming Class (so far): Lovering (4* C), Allen (4* F), Ruffin (3* G), Hammond (3* G)

Returning:

Battey (Sr) - F
Parquet (Sr) - G
Barthelemy (So) - G
Clifford (So) - G
Da Silva (So) - G
O'Brien (So) - F
Walker (So) - F

I had been thinking that next season was going to be lowered expectations, but now I'm not so sure.

Parquet gets better every year. Walker looks like he can be our go-to guy on offense. Battey will be the leader and do his thing.

Obviously some of this year's frosh who haven't done much will need to make significant jumps. And the incoming class will need to produce a starter or two.

I think the big question is PG. Will Key be the guy? I'm thinking Tad needs to finish this class with a PG (maybe a grad transfer).

But any Senior could stick around for an extra year right? Do you think anyone will?

I could see Dallas sticking around
Why? Will have already been here for 5 years, during which he and his family almost decided to hang it up after all the injuries. If that young man can finish his story this year healthy on the court at the Dance, I can't imagine what he'd come back for.

He loves being a Buff. Loves his teammates and is really happy playing for Tad. This is what has kept him going through all the work required to come back from the injuries.

That said if he can finish this year like you say here there isn't much for him to come back for.

He isn't going to be a star on this team, even if he gets healthier and steps up some.

He is a seven footer with some skills. If he is healthy enough to be a full time player next year he will have the opportunity to go play some international basketball (not in the top level leagues but someplace that will pay him and give him a great life experience) which I think would appeal to him.

Also haven't heard if they are going to make scholarship number allowances for basketball like football but if they aren't it is logical that Tad would want that scholarship for the PG you mention.

We absolutely need a veteran PG I think. Ken will be a nice pace changing piece, but it's very hard for me to see him as the main commander next year.

I'd love to see a PG who can shoot. We lose a lot of our 3pt shooting with this senior class.

What about Horne? Would he come back to finish up a Masters degree and be the 6th man? The 4/5 spot is going to be real thin after losing Dallas and Horne. They are going to need Lovering to be a big contributor from day 1.

Also, the 3 spot is wide open without D'Shawn. Allen needs to be ready to start or LOB/Da Silva need to make a big jump.

The little I've seen of O'Brien this season makes him look like a Schwarz clone.

He's a freshman so I don't want to rely on him, but isn't that exactly what Hammond is supposed to be? For that matter, isn't that exactly what Ruffin is, even if he is more combo-y?

Which is why I worry that Tad won't go this direction. The thing is, a veteran PG who knocks down open 3s is in your rotation and makes the team a lot better even if he doesn't end up starting. At worst, it would be an insurance policy we didn't need that still makes a significant contribution.

I can't think of a final signing I'd want more.

Looks like Nate Tominson is following Nimari Burnett and also a junior named Cameron Healy from Australia who plays at Albany. He might fit your bill, though I don't think he would help us much

I disagree

Next year won't see a significant drop off IF Tad brings in a grad transfer PG and either Horne or D'shawn stay an additional year.

We could always have a unicorn wish and have Kin stay a fifth year

Horne is interesting to me as a grad transfer. What is his degree in? If it’s a two year program it would seem like a no brainer for him to play another and wrap up his masters.

Though his style of play has the look of a future successful player in an international league so he could opt to get paid oversees instead of being a super senior

Agree with the sentiment here though — we need a veteran PG transfer (and for Tad to start recruiting more true PGs vs combo guards so we aren’t continuously in this situation like we were before Kin)

Point of clarity on this narrative around Tad and PG recruits:

Spencer was a combo who played the 3 as a freshman

White was a combo who we fans were surprised to hear would be a PG

The guys recruited as pure PGs were J-Hop, Talton, Collier, Kin and Key.

I think we're way too negative on the CG thing. Our backcourt issue has been much more about a lack of 2s who can knock down shots & break down defenses. We've had damn good PG play - including the year Ski had to man the position and was all-conference.

Our PG issues have been more related to lack of depth.

Spencer was a PG. He played PG in HS (I was an asst coach at Taft) and was recruited as a PG.

I think the point of emphasis is, given the stellar play of Kin (granted he is one of the top three PG's in the history of CU), it is comforting to have a PG who runs the team effectively. Key has not shown that yet in the limited time he has played. A transfer PG would give Key another year to learn, grow and develop - he does not look like he is capable of "effectively" running the team next year. Granted this string is a projection, the light switch could absolutely flip for him between now and next season.

I am hoping Kin, Jeriah, D’Shawn come back. It is likely none of them come back but you never know.
If Kin doesn’t come back AND we don’t get a competent replacement, there is a 0.0% chance next years team is as good as this years team. It’s impossible. You HAVE to have good guard play. The Buffs don’t have it without Kin

I’m not sure any of the current seniors come back, but so much of that could depend on the feedback they get. I’m not sure any of them are on the NBA radar, but making decent money overseas is hard to pass up. I could see Dallas coming back, but I’m not sure it makes a lot of sense. The only other player to me would be Kin, but only if 1) he doesn’t get the feedback he wants and/or 2) he wants to make one last run. Schwartz will probably look at other options, as will Horne. Personally, with the team assembled next year, adding Dallas and Kin would be pretty formidable. Walker is probably going to take another big step and hopefully Allen is everything he’s advertised to be. Lovering can ease in and the only question will be how the perimeter plays out.

You not really going to replace a guy like McKinley. I liked what I saw out of Barthelemy yesterday after Wright left in the first half. No, he's not going to run the offense as well as McKinley, but he'll work hard on defense and is a scorer. I think he blossoms once he's the man.

Plus, both Nique and Eli have decent handle. That's a veritable cornucopia of competent guards compared to some backcourts we've had in the Pac 12 era.

Aside from J-Hop being recruited as a pure PG, I want to disagree with you but can’t find solid ground to stand on.

I guess my point is, for someone who has put a few NBA point guards into the league, Tad is puzzling inconsistent with how he recruits for that position — it’s been feast or famine.

I respect what they brought to the program, but I hope the days of recruiting Taltons, J-Hops, and Colliers to fill PG starter depth are behind us. After getting so spoiled with Kin, we can’t go back to the days of guys not really contributing in any significant manner until their Senior year.

Also important to note that both Kin and Key were lucky late adds.

I trust Tad’s consistent evaluations of 3-4s all day long. Looking for improvement in 1-2s. Or at least guards that can break a damn press.

All the talk of seniors coming back for another year, how does this work out? There are still only 5 positions on the court, so this just sets up huge teams, with a ton of competition, or we play 12 deep or something silly?

I think generally, if a player wants to come back for an additional year, you have to be very clear on what their role will be. For example, Dallas, if he comes back, who's minutes does he take, Lovering? Walker? or does he fit in as a solid bench player that competes hard in practice? Generally with a lot of this talk, it seems almost like the thought is with someone coming back we can count the production like there are 6 guys on the court. That said, if for some idiotic reason we ended up with another year of Kin, I wouldnt complain, but he may be the only one where I think it is a win for all involved.

I have many of the same questions for all college sports next year.

Very good points, and if not for the loss of the 2020 Tournament, it feels like many of these Seniors were shortchanged, despite the epic collapse last year. This year is already special, and we all want to see it continue strongly! As for guys coming back, it is such a tough situation for them, but more so for the younger players that are ready to take over and should not have to wait forever, cause it could create animosity.

Completely agree. I get why they gave everyone a free year, I just feel like it is going to make a lot of teams rather crowded. Probably the saddest thing is for the boarder line younger players, means less and less of them will be able to get any playing time, or get on teams. Should be interesting to watch how it all works out, but the ridiculousness of the transfer portal I think is just the tip of the iceberg.

I think most will be asked to move on. Schwartz is the only one I can see potentially having a home with the Buffs. Kin will leave and declare and these folks will have replacements waiting: Walton, Horne, Daniels, Strating

Schwartz isn't developing and you can even argue he's regressed since the start of his junior year. It's time to move on.

If Tad can find 40 decent PG minutes out of this large mix of guards, most of whom will be very inexperienced, we will be decent. Eli can bring the ball up the court at times, especially when there isn't too much pressure, but he's not a PG.

We've seen flashes from Kee. Nique has had minutes, but not done well with them, although I think he's looked shown some interesting ability at times. The game is too fast for him still.

Basically: Tad better hope the incoming frosh have a legit PG among them.
