CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

possible pac 6 of uw,uo, wsu, osu, stan, cal.

that is enough of a core to make a credible argument that it should still be "power" conference with a current auto bid.

they will add 4 and with that core, i do not think they try to go national--- davis and boise and unlv, sdsu maybe? gonzaga? lol.

the pac was already the most "isolated" geographic conference betore the departures.

this whole mess has destroyed regionalism and regional rivalries.

also, the access to the playoffs is one of several defensive methods i think the big and sec are engaged in to try to avoid antitrust stuff and anticompetitive stuff and congress.

this is one reason the murderer's row of the truck stop 13 and the diminished pac will still have access. for now.

I remember when Oklahoma and Texas left the XII and there was the "alliance" between the Pac, B1G and ACC.

It really looked -- at least to me -- like the XII was finished.

How quickly things change.

thanks captain obvious.

I hate the fact that this is happening, but this is literally what happens in a free economic model. Schools are going to their best monetary outcome (or at least the schools that have bought into the fact that College Football is now a business).

We were NOT willing to view our athletics in that framework when we left the Big 12 many years ago.... and now we are. By hiring CP, we have shouted from the top of the Flatirons.... WE WANT TO PLAY!!!!!

I may hate this right now.... but we now have a chance to get to the college football playoff.

If the money gap is that big then there’s no argument for staying.

BUT if the money is remotely similar (big but 🍑) I don’t think UA or ASU care about exposure like CU. They know they don’t deserve prime time ESPN and Fox like we do.

It’s the only scenario I could see them staying. Money is a little less and they are fine with mostly streaming. Seems unlikely.

Oregon and Washington are the two that would have the biggest issue with exposure imo.
I agree to an extent, but Arizona basketball is what drives that ship and there’s no way they want to be in that position.

it is all going to change eventually, again.

as i said above, antitrust is gong to slow down this round. the sec and big are not going to plunder the pac and acc until they die because they have to worry about regulatory and legal ****.

we are about to see the next pause, once the last of the pac drama resolves.

If somehow the B1G does add FSU, Clemson, UW and UO, knu is somehow even more ****ed in that conference then they were before
if they do, we will see litigation and congressional inquiries and doj action. there are a whole bunch of congress critters representing aggrieved constituents if the pac and acc are further gutted.

i predict there will be a few more smaller moves-- like some pac schools defecting to the b12-- and then this all stops for this round.

It wont change until after we win the next 3 college football playoffs because CP has dominated recruiting and brought every 5 star to Boulder... right????

I have been wondering what rules will be in place for the 12 team playoff now that at least 1 of the Power 5 conferences is decimated.

The college football playoff format is no longer making sense to me. What will the rules be? Take all 8 teams that are in the Conference chaampionship games? Take The 4 remaining spots go to Pac 6 champion?, MWC champion? MAC CHampion? CUSA Champion?, or are the Big and SEC going to scream for 3 teams?

Oregon doesn't look to be standing pat.

I agree with whomever earlier said UO undesirable when you combine market size and Phil Knight’s age. They are like Okie St. with one big donor and otherwise nothing special. B1G not gonna wanna share with them. UW (and CU in a few years) I see as way more valuable.

the lack of a statement from FSU leadership is telling, at least to me. if there was no truth to the reports, I'd expect a statement

again, viewed through the lens of antitrust, the big and sec are incented to not reduce access to the playoffs right about now. they are good with whatever is left of the pac and others being deemed "peer" conferences for now. then they can try to say that the left behinds are not left out. ignore the dollar differences. lol.

this is going to be a lawyer's wet dream over the next few rounds.

so after the lawyers are done with this... are we going back to bowl games? :p

When lawyers get involved, the ultimate result is usually worse.

We all know where this is heading. A few more gyrations and CFB is NFL lite...and then it will be dead to me. I intend to enjoy the ride with Prime, and I suspect by the end of his run I will take up fly fishing or something.

congress is likely to get involved.

i expect eventually there will be:

1. a player's union with full comp and benefits
2. a revitalized or replaced ncaa type governing body with teeth.
3. a re-alighment of teams into geographically rational groupings.
4. inclusiveness and a de-emphasis of what is a power conference and was it is a g5. everyone will have some reasonable chance to win it all on paper.

Knight has set up an endowement/Trust system that will still be funding Oregon sports decades after his demise.

1 seems to be on it's way with the various lawsuits we've seen over the last few years
4 would seemingly be an outcome of the potential anti-trust legal action that you've been posting about (I'm interested in any more of your take on this as it's not a topic I'm seeing discussed elsewhere wrt realignment)

I'm not immediately envisioning what would be the driving forces behind 2 and 3

breaking it down further, i am thinking the sec and big will be fine sitting tight for now. if the pac blows up entirely and uo and uw end up in the b12 then it is one more fact the big can use to say it doesn't have unhealthy market power.

same reasoning as to why the sec is not going to engineer the destruction of the acc right about now.

also the former big commish who now runs the chicago bears said in an interview that he thinks that there is a cap on how big any conference can get before congress and the doj decide it is basically an exclusive national thing.

because litigation and threatened government action have in the past successfully attacked various cfb structures. think of 2and 3 as concessions or enticements to forestall or end government action.

watch. it will take time.

netting out my several posts, i think uo and uw are basically blocked from joining the big at this time. the sec has been thoughtful about how and who it raids in terms of fit and footprint. ucla and usc were very aggressive moves by the big. they won't plunder further at this time. uo and uw are going to have 2 choices in this round: 1. hold a pac together and know that their paths to the playoffs are easier than ever even if the conference money is **** or 2. go to the b12 because no one can credibly accuse the b12 of predatory behavior and such after all that has happened to them.

this round is about over. for now.

CFB can go in two directions: one will keep me interested and the other will push me away. They keep heading in the wrong direction.

Which brings me to a theory about a potential broader mindset in all of this.

If the sport can't figure out a way to get under a central governing body, form a CBA, create scheduling uniformity, more parity, etc. I wonder if in 7 years, when programs that fancy themselves blue bloods and believe they should be competing for NCs are continually reduced to 6-6 or 7-5 most years, if we start seeing some of them decide they'd rather win than have their already rich AF ADs bring in the extra money.

I think OU, and possibly Texas, are going to find out quickly that winning 9-11 games/year was a lot more fun than getting paid more but getting their teeth kicked in by Georgia, Alabama and LSU. I think USC will be just fine in the B1G, but I think UCLA is going to get murdered.
