2023 Rocky Mountain Showdown Preview Thread (9/16/23)

It is downright jarring seeing the speed and athleticism difference after mainlining multiple 15 minute CU behind the scenes videos all week.

Oh my god. CU by 50.

You mean throwing while jumping in the air, coupled with late throws isn't going to lead to success against the speed and skill of CU's DBs? *shocked*
I know, it was some deep dive kind of QB evaluation - that coupled with the fact he threw 3-4 INTs during the highlights . . .

I think a case could be made that CSU is not the primary rival of CU, but to claim they're "not a rival" doesn't seem supported by any conventional definition of sports rivalry.
If you want to argue it was a rivalry in the early 2000s when both were good....that's one thing. Its not right now. We don't play them every year, and we shouldn't. They're a waste of an OOC slot. We've embarrassed them the last few times we've played.

Last thing-I think both fanbases have to care about the rivalry-its pretty clear to me CU fans apathetic about it in the sense that CSU is just another game.

disagree.

CU fans aren't apathetic about CSU.
  • It's one of the highest attended games in any year we do play
  • the game preview thread on AB is typically one of the longest game threads of any

also disagree that playing annually is a requirement for a rivalry

carry on, though. this is my take, you're welcome to yours

Some folks on here have a very narrow definition of a rival.

Generally, it just means an opponent you have history with and your fans will care about more than the average game regardless of record because there's a "bragging rights" component. The stronger the bragging rights dynamic, the bigger the rivalry.

So, I see CU's rivals as follows (in order):

1. Nebraska
2. CSU
3. Utah

Others with potential to get there, particularly since we're going to have 6 more schools we share a border with & have history with besides the Utes on our future conference schedules plus a few others with some Big 8/12 history which could heat up. But right now I would only say those 3 - with the Utah rivalry barely there (I'm not sure either fan base would have lost sleep over it if we had ended up in different conferences & stopped playing, so it barely made my list.)

It’s a little ironic you’re posting about CU’s apathy towards CSU in a dedicated thread about the game with CSU. Like it not not, that game generates way more interest, message board chatter and particularly student engagement than most other games on the schedule.

Wanting it to be just another game doesn’t make it reality.

The 50%+ of CU alum that live out of state don’t give a crap about the CSU game. CU is selling out every home game this season, the CSU game won’t have the highest attendance.

And honestly, this talk about how CU fans should just turn up their noses at the game and pretend it's not a rivalry makes those fans look like they're trying way too hard to make CU more relevant than they actually have been

The way to eliminate it as a rivalry would be to beat them like 20 times in a row until CSU decides they don’t want to continue the series, then it will be dead.

If it drove so much fan engagement, why skip it for two years? Why skip it for another five after 2024? The reality in my view is this-the students love that game. This fanbase does not to the extent you think.

The only people who are unhappy about it not being every year are a segment of that fanbase and the Denver media. If you don't like me complaining about wasting OOC slots on a game that does NOTHING for this program, I really don't give a flying ****.

Last thing-find me a series/"rivalry" played between a power program and a Group of 5 with the kind of frequency of this series. There isn't one.

Probably very different among young alums from the past dozen years. The students since we and the Nubs left the old Big 12 are much more into the CSU rivalry. To the point where I've heard them bust out with the "It sucks to be a CSU Ram" chant when we're beating a different opponent.

It's a rivalry and I think it is good for the state
In what way? Any decent in state recruits don't give two sh!ts about the game. Joe Average Football Fan only cares who the Broncos play next. Corporate sponsors took it in the pants the last few games played at Mile High. The national networks don't care which why we have typically gotten a garbage day/time slot for most of the broadcasts. It's a 3rd rate rivalry when you look at the bigger picture. Flush this game like the huge floater it is going forward.

Because they know of nothing else. They will learn...
