Helfrich interviewing at Oregon (No longer CU OC)

Good or bad (if he leaves)?

I know a lot of guys are down on him including me but this really isn't good timing. If he leaves, it will be very difficult to find a new coach. Right when we're about to turn the corner (IMO) the players will have to learn a new offense. They won't even have Spring Ball to learn the offense. I never thought I'd say this, but I hope he stays. He does have Oregon ties...

It is neither good nor bad. I hope he doesn't go, that would be bad. But if he interviews and stays, that would be good.

Re: Helfrich interviewing at Oregon

kiesau... :woot:

It's interesting to see people throw his name out there. We love him as a recruiter...but realistically could he be a good play-caller? Everyone loves to hate on McD because of his age and Kiesau is what...27? A knock on Helfrich was his limited experience as a play-caller before CU, and Kiesau has none. Just something interesting IMO.

Oregon sure likes to piggyback CU tho (Helfrich, Kiesau, our recruits) **** the Duck!!!

lets hope so! no, but he did get promoted earlier this year to associate coach (or something like that, who knows). i think hawk has confidence in him, and his enthusiasm is infectious among players and recruits. we'll see if helfrich even takes the job.

If you can't bring Diante Jackson to the mountain, you bring the mountain to Diante Jackson.

Re: Helfrich interviewing at Oregon

Kiesau is 35 (older than Josh McD)... The best in the game started somewhere. You have to promote Kiesau if this happens as someone else will take him soon enough otherwise, and the likely landing spot would be just Ducky.

Re: Helfrich interviewing at Oregon

First off, I think helfrich hasn't done much and his playcalling will leave you scratching your eyes out but if he would go to oregon, that is HORRIBLE timing. The week of the spring game?

CU would be left with trying to impliment the new OC's offense in the fall. Yeah, that'll be good.

The state and their coaching contracts is assanine and it's time CU quit putting themselves behind the rest of the big 12 and get in the game.

Exactly.

Re: Helfrich interviewing at Oregon

The timing is a bit lame don't you think?

A bit. You would still have the summer and this is where an experienced coach like Denver Johnson comes in handy. Hopefully he would be able to help the new guy along.

True but he won't have the practice time and to try and do it in the fall is concerning (if it happens)

Last thing we need is any more questions on what offense we are trying to run.

Re: Helfrich interviewing at Oregon

Ballenger jumped too soon.

I tend to agree. I think promoting from within eases a lot of those questions though IMO.

The big question becomes who coaches the QBs.

Re: Helfrich interviewing at Oregon

Interesting spring so far.

New OL coach
OC interviewing
QB controversy and Ballenger departure
No offensive identity
Thin at WR
No captains announced

Who's driving the bus?

Captains are never announced until just before the first game.

Re: Helfrich interviewing at Oregon

This is hilarious. Some of you guys spend the last two years hating on Helfrich , now you're whining cuz he might leave.

Whaaaaaa!!!!!!!!

Re: Helfrich interviewing at Oregon

What about Kiesau and Johnson as OC. Kiesau continues with WR and Johnson has Brad Bedell to help with the line. Then we bring in an up and coming QB coach that can actual coach up a QB.

at least we aren't parading kids to Boulder County jail like a year ago.

i'm a fan of kiesau but i'd like to have someone who's called plays (effectively) before rather than a 2nd straight learn on the job scenario.

get Chuck Long on staff, call some plays...work with the QB's.

Re: Helfrich interviewing at Oregon

I'm not necessarily a big Helfrich fan. It really doesn't matter who's handling the job as long as the Buffs are winning.

Having said that I do agree with the bad timing angle and it exposes a flaw in the contract structure of the state.

It's pretty self defeatist to go out and hire a messiah to restore greatness to the Colorado football program and then undermine the hire by not providing his staff with any financial security and inducements to stay put.

A constantly shifting staff isn't a good thing for the program and I wonder if Hawkins eventually gets frustrated with it to the point that he starts entertaining other possibilities down the road

Re: Helfrich interviewing at Oregon

I agree with the folks who say "hire from within" on this one (if H leaves). The new power run offense isn't exactly Helfrich's idea, anyway, and Denver Johnson or Kiesau could come right in and run the new offense better.

My vote would be for Denver - he has the experience, the immediate respect of the players, and he has the power run mentality.
