Is this a trick question?
I suppose it all depends on the definition of "free". In the literal sense, they are not having to pay the University every semester for their schooling, so in that way, yes, the education is free.
I suppose.
Players put in a lot of work to "earn" their "free" ride.

I said no, but I view it as more of an exchange. If the student was able to just go to school without any demands placed on him/her then I would see it as free.
and if they get hurt and are good students they continue with their "free" ride.
it's funny that this argument is never brought up regarding free for the skiers, XC runners, golfers, etc.
FYI - most of those athletes are not on full rides. I don't know the exact numbers, but I believe that a ski team, which has something like 20 members, actually receives the equivalent of 12 full ride scholarships that it has to divide up among the athletes. I had a buddy who played golf at a D-1 school but didn't have a full ride.

:yeahthat: I said yes, because to me "free" means that they don't have to pay the University.
im an accountant and it is always all about the money to me...:smile2:
just because they are not performing on the field doesn't mean they aren't putting in their time to represent their team or the university...
I'm talking no longer able to play due to injuries.
okay...look at it this way...chances are they got those injuries as a result of playing the game...isn't that a price?

If I exchange legal services for someone to paint my house then am I getting my house painted for free?
You betcha! Just don't tell the IRS. :smile2:
Sure and I have bad knees from my time skiing competitively, I knew the risks, but I loved it and did it anyway.
The Football players and all Student Athletes are given something that not only "pays" for their education but allows them to make a living post football with their degree. Pretty damn good deal if you ask me.
