Re: Scholorship football players are getting their education for free

I suppose it all depends on the definition of "free". In the literal sense, they are not having to pay the University every semester for their schooling, so in that way, yes, the education is free.

Re: Scholorship football players are getting their education for free

Is this a trick question?

Chippy, I will never deny they work very, very hard for their tuition. But the vast majority just love playing ball and they get school paid for on top of that.

And as SDBuff pointed out in the other thread:

Tuition and Fees$26,756
On-Campus Room and Board $9,860
Books/Supplies$1,749
On-Campus
Estimated Total $38,365

That's almost $200k for a player who stays 5 years.

Re: Scholorship football players are getting their education for free

Sure, they have to practice, play, travel, etc...but that is why their fees are waived. they are providing a "service" to the school and the school is in turn "repaying" them for that service. It is absolutely free and good deal for the athlete. especially given the fact that athletes from less popular fan sports that bring in virtually no revenue (probably negative in most cases) get the same opportunities as the football players, basketball players, etc. thanks for making our football team better, here is your FREE education and your ticket to a drastically imporved life had you not been given this opportunity.

I said no, but I view it as more of an exchange. If the student was able to just go to school without any demands placed on him/her then I would see it as free.

exactly. there is an oppertunity cost to the S/A's. they give thier athletic services to a school and the school charges them nothing in return. or they can with hold thier services, pay for school on thier own and do with thier time as they please as opposed to having to meet a practice/strength&conditioning schedule set up by someone else. its a trade off.

the definition of "free" is definitely the key.

free to me means a gift; nothing required in return for the goods or services.

an athletic scholarship is paid for in time, effort, dedication, and public representation of the university.

it is definitely not "free".

get real people.

Re: Scholorship football players are getting their education for free

I suppose.

Players put in a lot of work to "earn" their "free" ride.

Sure they do, but a lot of them would still do it without getting the free ride. I did.

Re: Scholorship football players are getting their education for free

I suppose.

Players put in a lot of work to "earn" their "free" ride.

and if they get hurt and are good students they continue with their "free" ride.

it's funny that this argument is never brought up regarding free for the skiers, XC runners, golfers, etc.

FYI - most of those athletes are not on full rides. I don't know the exact numbers, but I believe that a ski team, which has something like 20 members, actually receives the equivalent of 12 full ride scholarships that it has to divide up among the athletes. I had a buddy who played golf at a D-1 school but didn't have a full ride.

I'm aware of that.

just because they are not performing on the field doesn't mean they aren't putting in their time to represent their team or the university...

:yeahthat: I said yes, because to me "free" means that they don't have to pay the University.

If the question is whether they are getting their education for nothing, I would say no. Clearly their talent and work are valuable, and the University gets those in return for the education.

It's all semantics... :smile2:

I'm talking no longer able to play due to injuries.

okay...look at it this way...chances are they got those injuries as a result of playing the game...isn't that a price?

I think you're splitting hairs. I've given a lot of time, effort, emotion, and passion to the University over the years. Yet I continue to pay them for the priveledge. You can find "value" in a lot of places. At the end of the day it comes down to monetary exchanges. That's the only quantifiable measure that is available.

Sure and I have bad knees from my time skiing competitively, I knew the risks, but I loved it and did it anyway.

The Football players and all Student Athletes are given something that not only "pays" for their education but allows them to make a living post football with their degree. Pretty damn good deal if you ask me.

If I exchange legal services for someone to paint my house then am I getting my house painted for free?

C'mon, of course it's free - they obviously work very hard, but they're playing a game they love.

Sure they're on scholarship now, but they all played HS ball just for fun, why would they do it if it was so awful?

If you let them quit football but still keep their scholarship, how many would quit...1...2?

Of course it's free.

i'm not arguing against the fact that it is a pretty damn good deal...what i am saying is that i don't consider it to be "free"...

scholarships are not "given" to student-athletes, they "earn" them...

Can someone clue me into the point of this thread?

In the truest sense, yes it's a free ride since they do not pay for their expenses including tuition, room, board, food and sweet Nike gear.

Is it free in terms of the wear and tear on their body? No.

I suspect many parents look at it as being "free" since they don't have to pay for their kids schooling or that kid does not have to take out student loans either.

A scholarship is like a bonus at work. You work hard and excel at what you do, you will be greeted with a bonus for your hard work, but only the elite will get that bonus, by meeting certain criteria.

Sure. The football player does not have to pay for their education, room & board, etc. And the University does not have to pay for the services that the football player provides. It's all free!

This is one of the dumber discussions I have seen on allbuffs, but let's turn it into a 15 page thread.
