ok, gonna try to lay this out as objectively as I can.

I was in section 212 row 62 seat 25 today. My wife and two friends from out of town were with me.

I am a boisterous fan. I like to think I am not obnoxious but I whistle, yell, put my hands up for punts, shake my keys for 3rd downs, and stand a lot.

In the early part of the 3rd quarter the Buffs make a good play. I stand up during the play out of excitement and get hit in the shoulder with a hat. I turn around and some old man (CU fan by his dress) 2 rows behind me yells at me to sit down.

We get into it. I don't recall exactly what I said but I generally minded my language according to my wife but was none to pleasant to the guy and he wasn't nice to me either.

His point seemed to be that he couldn't see if I stood up. My point was a) there are nicer ways to get my attention and ask me for a favor than hitting me with a hat b) this wasn't church, people stand up here some times c) I planned to stick the hat up his ass if it hit me again.

Now, without knowing the specifics (unless one of you saw the incident) am I in the wrong here? You will never be the hero getting in a fight with an old man but good lord man, I am cheering for my team, I am one of the fans that is animated, but I am not causing issues. If you wanted to sit down during the game why not stay on your couch?

So, I put it to you...was I out of line? I am willing to accept it if the crowd says yes, but my position is that people will stand and yell and holler and whistle and whatever else at a football game to cheer on their team. and if you go to the game you need ot participate or sit quietly while it happens.

Thoughts?

You gotta do what you gotta do. If you get excited during a particular play and stand up, screw the old fogey with two arthritic hips. There may be perhaps some compromising occasionally, but he lost his chance when he hit with a hat. The only thing that would've held me back from making fun of his creaky old ass would be that he was a buff.

now, granted, if there was no hat-hitting, you guys probably should've come up with a mutual agreement somehow.

If you want to go someplace were people sit quietly and wait till the end to show excitement go to the opera. This is a football game, you are there to get excited, jump up and shout (appropriately) and generally let of a bunch of steam and emotion.

You were not wrong in cheering, the guy was wrong in trying to be a wet blanket.

Now understanding he may have been older and/or handicapped and thus unable to see because he could not stand up as much as others. If this is the case he should contact the ticket office and get seats where his view is not going to be obstructed by others acting like fans.

I probably would have been a bit more restraint in telling him to go **** himself, but you were within your rights and normally expected behavior.

I would've just thrown his hat as far as I could, yell "free hat!" and continue doin' what I was doin'.

We thought of that. He was definatively able-bodied.

No, you should have took the hat and shoved it back in his face. Being OLD isn't an excuse for being an a-hole.

I've always felt it is wrong when someone at a football game tells you to sit down, which is equivalent to telling you to stop cheering and getting excited. Bull****. Like MtnBuff said, this is a football game, not the an opera. If you want to sit down and watch the game, then stay home.

Nothin to worry about. I would have done what others have said, including throwing his hat and farting in his direction. He was probably the kind of fan who didn't care about our losing streak or talkins or any of that $hit. You're good dude

lucky yoou only have one. Where I sit I have just gotten used to sitting because it's me against the rest of the old people I sit near.:sad1:

I am in favor of standing and cheering all you want. Just don't get too drunk and swear at the reffs (I've been guilty of that once or twice). Pops should not have thrown the hat - that's rude.

Verdict: you are free to go and free of all charges (esp if you wife says so)

No, you weren't out of line. If that was me I would have told him that it is not a spectator sport and everyone should be on their feet screaming and if he wants to sit there then perhaps he should stay home and watch on TV.

This has always been one of my issues with many of my fellow CU fans is that the crowd, the whole crowd, doesn't help the team the way they should. When the D is out there, everyone should be up and yelling.

You could have said, 'Excuse me sir, you seem to have dropped your hat! I will make sure to stand here in case you drop it again so I block it and you can get it back.':smile2:

Kill 'em with kindness.

We all want everyone to stand and cheer, but until you are older, you can't understand how stand for a whole game is really not an option. And chasing fans out because they can't stand for long periods of time is a bad idea with the liomited fan base we already have.

He still should have understood and asked a bit more nicely though.

Nice of you to even consider that you could have been in the wrong. You weren't, of course; as has been posted here, it's not church or an opera or whatever, it's a sporting event.

I've been asked to sit down a few times at games and I've heard a few requests around me (never at a home game). Most often it's resolved in a friendly manner by just ignoring the request as long as many are standing and not just me. If it were just me I'd just sit down out of courtesy at an away game. But at most away games Husker fans are together and standing is the norm in exciting situations.

If somebody actually touched me or, as you say, hit me with a hat or something I'd turn and request that they calm down or risk being reported to security.

Jesus Christ! Where I sit, there are quit a few old alumni guys that do just what you did. It's no big deal to me. I might have told him that when he starts buying your tickets to the game, that you'll do anything he asks. Otherwise, he needs to either move to another seat, or STFU.

I hate people who just randomly stand up and block your view when there isn't a particularly interesting play going on, just stand up and look around at the scenery.

However, I can promise you I never say a word and I keep my hat where it belongs.

okay, hate is a strong word. I am dismayed when I have to keep standing up and blocking the people behind ME only because some guy in front of me stands up and we create reverse dominos all the way up the stands.

But tell an enthusiastic fan to quiet down and sit down? Nope, never happen.

I know some people that stand up the entire game. I see nothing wrong with that, either.

I have vowed to never become the old guy that gets annoyed at the kids with the seats in front of me being up dancing during the entire concert.

i don't believe you did anything wrong here Buff95. I do like Flatirons idea of killing him with kindness though. That would have been funny. Keep on rooting for those Buffs.

was it a nice hat??? I would have thanked him for the hat....you did nothing wrong...it is football....GO BUFFS!!!!

I was at the CU v Texas game last year. CU had the ball for their 3rd offensive play of the game. I'm standing up and was told by 4 different people to sit down.

I looked at them and told them they should have stayed home and watched on TV. I told them that they were the reason CU has the reputation of having some of the worst fans in the Big XII.

Also yesterday I was told to sit down, and CU had just received the kickoff and had yet to run a play on offense. I was in section 118 right next to the students. Fortunatlely yesterday someone else in the crowd mentioned that everyone stands for at least the first few plays.

You definitely weren't out of line. People stand at college football games.

To be fair, if you stood up during a play right when something exciting happened, that would be really annoying, especially for an old man who isn't really into standing and sitting, standing and sitting, etc. But there is an easy remedy for that: sit in the sections on the west side of the stadium with all the rest of the senior set, or stay the f*ck home. If he's too cheap to spring for those seats and has to sit up top on the east side with the juvenile delinquents who actually cheer and yell and show signs of life (full disclosure: when I had season tickets, they were in 214) then he deserves everything he gets.

And I say that as somebody who likes to sit for healthy chunks of the game.

I think it's important to note the general disposition of the people around you. If standing up a lot is uncommon in that particular part of the stadium, then you're out of line. If it's common for folks to stand up and sit down quite often, then you were fine.

We run into this in my section all the time. It's not a big deal to me, but I know a lot of folks around me have issues with people blocking their view of the game.

I'm not sure how to answer this...standing up, especially during a good play, is part of being a fan in the stands. I don't like it if people stand for no reason. Standing and then sitting back down seems reasonable to me.

He really made the rude move by hitting you with his hat...I would think he could have got your attention some other way and asked nicely to sit IF you were blocking his view.

He probably deserved your pissed response.

And I agree...old people don't have a free pass...they can be stupid and rude too and need to be put in their place when they act badly.

When you say "old guy", do you mean that he was in his 40's, or was he actually a senior citizen....A lot of times, 20-somethings will refer to a 40 year old, as a "senior citizen."

My father-in-law loved both UCLA and SC. For awhile, we had season tix for both teams. MY FIL was 80, with severe back problems, so he used a walker. But he loved college football. He didn't want to stay inside and watch tv. He loved the excitement at the Rose Bowl and Coliseum. He really wanted to support his teams.

Because my FIL had so many mobility problems, he bought handicapped seats. In those 2 venues, the handicapped seat are simply folding chairs set up behind the last row of permanent seats. There's a place for the disabled people to put their walkers, canes, etc.

One year, the people directly in front of us, were avid fans who wanted to stand up on every play. As soon as the play started, the would instantly jump up. In their excitement, they didn't realize that they blocked the view of the game for the people behind them, who had also paid for tix.

You could say, "Well, the people behind me should stand up also. They should stand up for the team." Well sure, that's true, if the people behind the excited fan can jump to their feet as quickly as a 20 something can. In my FIL's case, that simply wasn't possible.

Also, sometimes the people right behind you, are balancing trays of food or beverages on their lap, and they cannot jump up as quickly. Sometimes they are holding coats or backpacks on their laps, and by the time they are able to drop the coats, blankets, trays of food, etc., the play has already finished.

When the people in front of us stood up all the time -- and they stood for almost all the plays-- my FIL tried calling to them, "Excuse me, would it be possible for you to sit down, please." He tried this many times, but of course, they were very excited and were cheering for the team, so they did not hear him.

He would never throw his hat, of course. That's very rude and uncalled for. So, because they couldn't hear him, he called the usher, who was standing at the top of the stairs. The usher came and spoke to the avid fans. They were in their 20's, they were alums, and they did not want to sit down. It didn't concern them that the people behind them could not see. They thought that everyone should stand up for the team.

So, the usher went over to the student section, and he found places for them in the student section. They loved the student section, because it was full of exuberant people close to their own age. The students stood up throughout the game, and there was never a problem. MY FIL was happy, because he could then see the team, and he loved being in that environment.

No one should ever throw anything at you, of course. But, if you are in section 212, you are fairly close to the end zone and the student section, I think. Did you think of asking the ushers to re-seat you in the student section? You would be surrounded by exuberant fans, and there would be no more problems with "older" people.

Of, if you choose to stay in your seats, could you listen for people asking you to sit down, if they cannot see? It's very rude to throw things. The people behind you should not be doing that. But, they paid for their tix, so they have a right to see the game also. Just an opinion --- I've been in that same situation. Best wishes, from B4E
