Assistant Coaches for HC Bill McCartney

Listening to Kyle Ringo on 87.7 the ticket today, Mac / Bienemy duo sounds like they're on board with taking over IF CU wants them. Bienemy as "coach in waiting" (in principal if not in name). Presumably OC/Assistant Head Coach. I hope they keep Darian Hagen just because I Imagine he and Bienemy could recruit LIGHTS OUT in Central LA.

Could we land Jon Embree as an offensive coach away from the Redskins if we already have Bienemy on staff? Or is that a downward move for him?

Rumor is that Tom McCartney is also lined up if we go down that path.

Who would coach the defense? Brian Cabral is in I'm sure. Hankwitz as DC? I think he's at Northwestern currently as DC. What about Les Miles if he gets canned at LSU? Alfred Williams as DL coach (I'd love to see him recruit) would be great and spare me the no coaching experience BS -- he's got to be better than Romeo.

I heard someone at the game Saturday that Koy Detmer has agreed to come back as QB Coach if/when Mac is named the HC. I almost snorted beer out of my nose. Are we seriously going to just hire back every CU player and former coaches to take over? I have warmed up the Mac and then a HC-in-waiting but would like to see a little more nationwide search for other staff vacancies than just hiring a bunch of Buffs or Colorado HS coaches.

Is it really too much to ask that we hire at least a coach or two from somewhere other than CU media guides from the 1990s and the McCartney family Christmas gathering??

Honestly, we have a program in a ****load of trouble here, and you just named an entire staff that (aside from Mac, coming off a 15 year retirement) hasn't ever really succeeded beyond the position coach level in an NCAA program. If we're going to have half our staff undergoing on the job training, we're ****ed, and I don't care if those guys were great players here 20 years ago.

If Mac and Bieniemy come in, so be it. I'd love them to keep Cabral and Ambrose (even if he never played here). I'm ok with adding Embree to that. But Hagan has already had his opportunity and shown NOTHING as a D-1 position coach. He doesn't get to start over just because we're putting the band back together. Alfred?? Why? Seriously, we need guys who are ready to coach NOW.

I think Cabral is leaving.

Here are some directions I think we could take:

1. Jashon Sykes
2. Other ex-player hire like Kavavis McGhee, Chad Brown, etc.
3. Ex-coach brought back such as Ron Vanderlinden (probably available if the Penn State situation comes apart).
4. Hire someone from outside but known through the coaching tree (i.e., getting Joe Barry away from USC with a promotion to Defensive Coordinator / LB Coach).

For the record, I prefer option #4.

Thank you. I have no idea why anyone still wants Hagan here. Great, he can recruit decently, but he seems to have MAJOR issues with motivating players. Also, why do so many people this notion that a staff comprised of CU people is the best recipe for success?

To me, one of the strongest arguments Mac has going for him is that he has extensive relationships with assistants around the country. Why would you mitigate that by limiting the assistant coaching pool?

Detmer as a QB coach wouldn't be that bad. He was a smart kid who comes from a 'coaching family.'
I do agree that if Mac came back his staff can't all be former CU Allstars.

I agree with those who want to get new blood in here if Mac comes back, but I also understand some of the thinking on bringing back some of the old players/coaches. They bring passion for the school. They have it already, no time needed to develop it. They know exactly what it is like to play/live in Boulder. They have genuine experience to sell recruits.

I think the fast way back is a good mix of old and new.

But of course most Buff fans are going to think of Buffs first and get most excited about the possibility. I think it's ok to have fun with that. Most people realize it would be a very good thing to make a hire or three of guys who might be unfamiliar to us but recommended to Mac by people in his network such as Dungy or Caldwell.

Let's not take this too seriously at this point. Speculating is about the only joy in Mudville right now.

Those two sentences are completely contradictory - Detmer was a great Buff, but where has he coached? I'd take Brad Bedell and Jashon Sykes as full time coaches before I took Koy.

How about McCartney, Bienemy as OC, Les Miles or Mike Hankwitz as DC, Ambrose as DB coach, Cabral as LB coach, Alfred Williams as DL coach (so shoot me -- he'd recruit lights out), Karl Dorrell as WR coach/passing game coordinator (he's a Mac guy and think of his West Coast connections -- currently assistant with Miami Dolphins), Steve Logan as RB coach (former ECU head coach and Coach Mac guy), and Jon Embree as oline coach (currently coaching with Redskins).

Hey, a guy can dream.

:wave:i dont want hagan here...

Koy spent a lot of years in the league, you don't do that unless you know the position inside and out. I would take him as a QB coach in a heart beat.

Hmmm...I think I'm on to something here -- Karl Dorrell may make some sense. Coach Mac guy, former HC at UCLA, deep recruiting connections in the West....

Here's what the last hire looked like:

If Mac is the hire, based on his track record, I have little doubt he'll bring in a very capable staff, whether they're ex-buffs or not.

I'm in the camp of being happy if Mac and/or EB come back. Granted, I'd be happy with a lot of choices right now. But, no way am I in favor of keeping Hagan. He was a great Buff, but it just doesn't seem to be working out as a coach.

As mentioned by many others, I'd love to retain Cabral, Ambrose and Prince. If we're looking to add any coaches with a CU past my preferences would be Hankwitz (DC), Dorrell (OC) and Bob Simmons (Special Teams!!!!). Simmons could coach the defensive line in addition, or linebackers if Cabral did not stay. Very tempting to speculate.

I say we bring in Frank Beamer as special teams coach. His teams usually seem to usually have pretty good special teams play plus he can recruit the eastern seaboard.

Is he an ex-Buff??

Because if not, there's no way we'd want him. We should hire Ben Kelly for ST coach instead...

I don't mind a few CU ties but bringing back every former player to coach isn't going to cut it. Also, excuse me if I don't believe anything ringo has to say....

Don't think Dorrell is a Mac guy FWIW. Didn't he come to CU after Rick was hired as the HC?
