Oliver is re-writing the record books at Brophy on both sides of the ball. Reminds me of Nelson Spruce's recruiting and ability. Plays in a power league for a power team, puts up eye popping numbers, but doesn't have a lot of offers due to combine numbers that are very much middle-of-the-road. Not big or small. Not fast or slow. From a combine standpoint, he's just a guy. Then you get him on the field and he dominates on both sides of the ball.

As far as the athleticism (since folks will be concerned and wonder about the 2* rating):

Oliver won AZ States in the Decathlon as a junior.

Here were his event results:

Oliver is looked at more as a Safety than WR prospect by most of the recruiting sites.

Here's what Rob Cassidy (Rivals recruiting analyst) had to say on October 11th:

Recruiting wrap: Oliver's lone offer is from New Mexico.

Performance: Oliver was the weekend's most pleasant surprise. He was everywhere on Friday night, making plays on offense, defense and blocking a field goal. But while he was effective at wide receiver, his future on the college level is likely at defensive back. Oliver, who made a game-clinching interception, played cornerback on Friday night and was effective in man coverage but also showed a knack for ball hawking and delivering a big hit. There's plenty to like about Oliver, even if he doesn't have top-level speed. His motor, instincts and ability to change directions quickly make him an under-the-radar prospect to watch.

Grade: B+

Look for his ratings to start climbing on the sites. CU has a great shot here with Oliver's 1st P5 offer.
 
Those are not terrible measurables. Particularly at safety. Would like to get a kid or two from Brophy.

Seriously, I think a kid's ability to give good soundbites and be comfortable in front of a microphone/reporter is underrated in recruiting.

For the most part they do, but the coaches should be taking 4-5 sleepers, reaches, etc. a class. I'm not advocating taking a full class or even half a class of these caliber of players, but I think a handful are worth the risk.
 
Duff is easily the best talent evaluator on Allbuffs... if you think he basis his opinion on star ratings only, then you are sadly mistaken.

I actually haven't seen anything that would resemble a talent evaluation from him. All I hear is generic stuff like x player is too slow or short. Nothing that actually supports a idea of how a player performs.
 
Let's not get into a fight within this thread.

Especially since it seems like we're in agreement where it matters: Oliver is a great athlete who performed at big boy high school football. He's a state champion decathlete who has an opportunity to go to Miami on a track scholarship (our main competition, it seems) who also starred for a Top 10 football team in Arizona. We all want him. Tremendous potential for a kid like this.

fwiw, I think the track thing is what has caused some schools to back off due to the assumption that he'll do T&F in college instead of football.

I haven't kept up with this guys' recruitment; is there any chance that the staff offers him the opportunity to do both T&F and football at CU? Hawk's staff did this with Hugh Charles , IIRC.

They could, if the kid was set on it. But he counts against the football program in terms of scholarship numbers either way. You can't give a kid a T&F scholarship (non-Revenue sport) and have him play football - it counts as a schollie. So if you are using a scholarship, you want him focused on football with rare exception
