2015: Recruiting News, Notes & Official Visitors

Then they need to turn to JUCO because we aren't going to all of the sudden garner the commitments of a bevy of 4-5* WRs. CU recruiting is what it is at this point. Life after Spruce could be tough, but they have a bunch of young guys who got experience early, that they're banking on developing into solid players. Spruce wasn't an elite prospect coming out either. Give these kids time.
CU recruiting being "what it is" is not good enough - that's what got us to this point.

I'd just like to point out that the only WR on the roster that we all seem confident in after Spruce is Shay Fields... our one 4* recruit in the WR corp.

We have more WR talent on this team than we've had since Barnett early years.

Bobo & Dunston were just freshman.
Shay was a Frosh
Walker Redshirted.
We will add two this cycle that will be better than we've added most years.

Yes - this Brown kid would have been a definite improvement and he seemed to have something between his ears. Choosing to TT over CU, seems like he's picking a coach, which is always a bad bad idea. Think Brown was a well vetted solid, first choice. But we got some pretty solid 2nd options still on the table. As long as the next option is not a DD height-challenged option, I think we will have a good one.

He's the only one we really saw much of with Gucci, DD and Spruce. All I'm saying is that our offense was not the problem last year and the sky is not falling. Have to give the young guys time to develop (and that includes Bobo).

REcruiting like we have been gets you one spruce, and a bunch of guys like Tyler and DD as your starters. Tyler was a spot player till later in the year, and DD wouldn't have started for a single other P12 team. The youngsters may develop, but they didn't show many signs of it last year. Fields did.

More good recruiting. Winning these battles.

Winning these battles is not a matter of trying harder, like you're making it out to be. They can promise early playing time and sell them on NFL dreams (what college doesn't), and they can show them a great time on OVs, but at the end of the day, a hundred other opinions are in their ears and they make the decision.

No, having Dan Hawkins and Jon Embree as your head coaches get you Tyler and DD as your starters.

Who said that? Where are you getting that from? It's about being better than the other guys. Our coaches have not shown they are better recruiters than the other guys.

You mean, coaches who don't recruit well?

Mine is to hire some assistants who have been very successful recruiting highly rated P5 players from the western US.

Who on the staff actually has that track record?

Well, Mac himself has the recruiting track record but aside from that, I don't know the recruiting history of the rest of the staff.

It's no coincidence that Alabama typically has a top 5 recruiting class year in, year out. At some point, success of the program is what draws recruits. Kids want to play for a P12 championship or National Title. They look at CU and see a decade of awful and they don't want to come here. @Darth, you're making it sound like it should be easy to recruit to CU, when that's just not the case.

No, he doesn't. He recruited the south when he was an assistant.

Edit: It's no coincidence that the 4 JUCOs joining the program in a few weeks are all originally from Georgia and one of Mac's best friends in the profession is the HC at Georgia Military College. Mac's also developed good relationships in California and has started to in Colorado with the HS coaches. But he needs assistants that can open doors, too.

I have no response for this argument that CU fans and administrators should just expect our recruiting to suck no matter who our coaches are or what our facilities situation is, or any other factor but our W/L record, but somewhere Duff Man's head just exploded.

I'd like to point out 42% of Spruce's TD's and 35% of his yardage came from 25% of his games, all of which were against non P12 opponents. Love the guy's play, he is a pretty good WR, but he wasn't the game breaker he looked like against CU's OOC schedule. My point isn't that Spruce isn't good, he is. He is a marvelous possession WR and probably will play at the next level, but he DESPERATELY needs a "1" WR a la Paul Richardson. Is Fields it? Dunno. Is there anybody other than Fields? Maybe Bobo. While the WR corps (not core, you illiterates) is a CU strength, the above demonstrates, I think, just how far behind talent wise CU is as far as numbers and depth go compared to their peers.

So, the corps can't have a core? How about the apple corps?

I know your joking, but, hey, you never know. He may end up being decent.

Being completely serious here. Have heard nothing but good things about JMac. Great hands and good quickness. Will be a good contributor in the slot in the coming years.

Jay Mac was a solid recruit. I expect him to be a productive receiver at CU.

He's a complementary piece to the offense, though. What I'm complaining about is that we don't have enough guys who can do something outside the script to create an explosive play. The level of execution has to be so damn high when you don't get that. CU needs to find more of it.

I've always said that you can recruit and develop guys, but there's one position that you absolutely need to have some physical freaks at and those guys are usually not sleepers. WR is the one position. DE and CB to a lesser extent. Everyone else it gets harder to evaluate High School kids. But WR's are more born than developed. Guys slip thru because there's a lot of High Schools that don't use them and don't have a QB that can throw. But at the end of the day, freakish Athletic Ability is hard to coach and you need that at WR.

So yeah - this is one area we absolutely need to upgrade our base talent level each and every year. And for the record, Shay is a nice receiver as is Spruce, but they are not the game breakers. CSU found one more like that in fact. A 2-star.

would have liked to get this kid to cu... but its not make or break.... just got to win some of these battles once in a while!...lubboch has more dirt roads than stillwater

csu got lucky last year on many things .... Dee Hart anyone ??

Damn, was hoping we would get brown after not getting the wyoming kid. We're used to losing recruiting battles so oh well, coach them up and there are still some good ones left. Go buffs

Holy ****....somebody slip you a mellow mushroom? I like the attitude.
