I think there's opportunity in the Big 12 this year.

The top is insanely good with #1 Arizona, #3 Iowa State, #7 Houston, #9 BYU and maybe #14 Texas Tech.

But the middle tiers are vulnerable and the bottom tier is strong enough that no one is going to be a NET drag.

Our Buffs have a path to building a resume.

Buffs Hold On Against Utah

By: Aiden Tank

BOULDER –
Colorado's Bangot Dak recorded his fourth career double-double, and the Buffaloes held off Utah down the stretch Wednesday to collect an 85-73 win at the CU Events Center, giving the Buffs a 2-0 start in the Big 12 for just the third time.

Tad Boyle's Buffs improved to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play. The Utes lost their third in a row, falling to 8-7, 0-2.

Dak finished the game with 16 points and tied his career-high with 12 rebounds, with three blocks and one steal for the game. Sebastian Rancik led the team with 19 points. Off the bench, Isaiah Johnson added 12 points, and Alon Michaeli tallied 10 points.

Don McHenery led the Utes with 24 points, and Terrance Brown added 16 points. After halftime, the Buffs held the scoring duo to only 10 points combined.

The Buffs led by 10 points at multiple points throughout the game, but couldn't push the lead further. After Utah cut the lead to two points, Colorado finished the game strong on both sides of the ball to win by double-digits.

On defense, the Buffs used a zone defense more than they had at any point this season but held Utah to shooting 39.4% from the field and 31.3% from 3-point range.

"It helps us get into our press, try to speed their guards up, and to take some time off the clock, and then it's just a different type of defense," Rancik on the zone. "Like Coach [Boyle] always says, to play any defense, you just have to play hard. It's the same as man, just a little of a different concept."

A big difference came from the bench. Colorado outscored Utah 33-8 in bench points led by Johnson and Michaeli as well as nine points from Josiah Sanders.

"I think Josiah [Sanders], Jalin [Holland], Isaiah [Johnson], and Alon [Michaeli], those four guys coming off the bench is is pretty darn good," Boyle commented on the bench. "I think the depth of this team is one of the strengths of this team. Our bench is huge, and Isaiah is a big part of that, but he's not the only part of that. I'm really pleased with with him. I say this all the time, but the ceiling of this team is still higher than where we're playing."

New Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo attended his first official athletic event in front of Buff Nation and spoke to the faithful at halftime. He told the fans, "When we are united in our purpose and aligned in our vision, there is absolutely no limit to what we can achieve here. We're going to lock arms shoulder to shoulder, and we're going to have some fun. We're going to win some games, win some championships, and we're going to make this great state proud."
...

UP NEXT
Colorado returns to the CU Events Center on Saturday to take on No. 14 Texas Tech at 5:00 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.

Somebody needs to show up and grill Tad on why Malone isn't coming off the bench and limited to 10 min a game.

And then ask him how happy he is that RG is gone on a scale of 1 to 1,000,000.

If the worst boss I'd ever had was finally getting replaced, I'd be ecstatic
I remember when that happened for me.

A new site GM came in. We didn't know each other well at the time, but the new GM who fired "worst boss ever" is now one of my best friends. I remember telling him later that I was looking for a new job at the time it happened, and was so relieved I could stop doing that. I also reflected to him that "skip level" meetings have value, because myself and others weren't going to give the GM a chance to fix it, we were just going to leave.

There have been 3-4 times in my life when talking to my 2nd level leader I was saying to myself, "Please ask. Please just ask about my boss that reports to you" and they never did and I never said a word.

Back in the 90's, as CU women's basketball got really good, giveaways were how the fan base was built.

There were no season tickets then. The regulars had their regular spot and we didn't let other people sit in them. It didn't matter because there were so few people attending the games.

When the giveaways became popular, if you wanted a particular area, you had to be there when the doors opened. The lobby was always full at that time. Then people ran to "their" seat.

After 2 seasons of this, CU went to season tickets. First season was very limited in the number of tickets. Next year they opened it up and they sold. Most people kept them until KMM arrived. Slowly, people quit buying. These were people who started attending games in the early 80's when Rene Portland coached.

This is how you do it. It pays off in the long run.

I did.

The new GM I mentioned above first brought in Mike, a guy from another site, for what I would later learn was a second opinion before making the move.

I knew Mike -- he was my mentor when I first became a project manager. I really respect Mike. He asked me out to lunch during his visit, just us two.

Over the course of lunch, Mike's started asking increasingly uncomfortable pointed questions about my boss. At one point, I said "Mike, you're asking me some really pointed and difficult questions about my direct supervisor."

"I know"

Despite it being an incredibly low bar, it's becoming increasingly obvious that Rick George was probably the worst AD in CU history. Certainly, he was the laziest. No wonder Saliman and Chancellor Schwartz forced him out sooner than he wanted to go.
Not surprising that once CU got an administration that recognizes what athletics can do for the University, RG got kicked out.

This is on the AD/School. Most fan bases will give lukewarm support to a program who consistenly finish in the bottom half of their conference. And a program the AD/school only gives lukewarm support to in the first place.

I'm hopeful for the Lovo era.
I believe in Lovo, but his work is cut out for him given the stale nature of the program and the very real possibility half our first 6 are gone by May.

I think Houston's arena only holds a little over 7k, so they're pretty much sold out but the facility is inadequate.

This team was supported before RG got here and it took a minimum investment from the AD which they made up in spaces through food, drinks, merch, etc. This was just a lazy AD that did nothing. Actually, he did worse than nothing. He went out of his way to take resources away and drain the program of any type of hype or support. He tried to kill it into a we have to have a team to keep the min numbers of sports existence. I cannot wait for him to be put in the garbage heap of historically unimportant people that have graced the CU campus. **** him
