From Brian Howell’s article today:

Kelly said Sav’ell Smalls, a former five-star recruit who joined the Buffs as a transfer from Washington, has been impressive since arriving this summer. “He’s been one of the more impressive guys that we’ve had in,” Kelly said. “I’ve been really pleased with him since he’s been here. Sometimes a change is good. It’s just good for people.”

I think Alabaster Yak had the info 1st, and #1 Pick talked about it in another thread. Today it was announced Smalls is indeed going to TE. His highlights are on page 1 of this string. It looks like Smalls played a bunch of WR in HS and has good ball skills both on the inside and out. He lost some weight since his UW days. He plays high/tall, so IMO he does not look like a hand in the dirt low run blocker, but he may have the quicks to seal something to the outside. I think much will depend on how quick and fast he still is; and just how he gets off the ball. If that goes well, it is how big he still is.

I'll be interested to see how this turns out. He may give the O some options. Also, we may then just need one more TE, if Pass is back. I'm definitely rooting for Smalls. #1 Pick made a good point that sometimes switching to O can help these guys turn it around--knowing the snap count rather the read/react. IMO, some of his better HS highlights are on O rather than D.

Edit: Reading the other news releases on Smalls today, they seem to think he will be an good to excellent mainly blocking TE.

I'm baffled that we have not signed a bigger name TE yet. Maybe Marion's system downplays the position. I saw Kopetz withdrew from the portal and is coming back, we still look very thin/lacking talent here.

I'm wondering if Smalls is seeking a medical waiver, since he just played 5 games last season and was hurt? Anyone know anything about this? I have not seen him listed as graduated, portaled, or out of eligibility; but he not on our schollie list, while Finneseth is today. Smalls has endured a nightmare of a college career, but the coaches really seem to like him. If he could come back, he would have 2 seasons experience in the TE room, so maybe he could pop over Atkins. He is built for it--much bigger than Atkins. Maybe when healthy he made some strides in blocking and learning the position receiver wise. Per his HS film, he was a great receiver--very agile with great set of hands.

I saw on Adam's 247 scholarship chart today that Finneseth is still listed at S, but I thought he was out of eligibility. Could have been clickbait, but yesterday I saw something where he is trying out for WWE--looked like a legit story. Also, I have heard McGill and Harden are trying to come back on waivers.

We have not shown any propensity to use them whatsoever, even if Marion has. The lack of TE usage has been a cloud over Boulder, CO for 15 years.

5 games is too much and you have to have lost 2 seasons to injury to get 1 back.... So I don't see that as a possibility.

Great receiver on HS film! You do know they don't show the drops in those highlight films? He played 2 years at TE here and he really wasn't open very often. I think we can assume Marion wants more receivers, less tight ends.

Finneseth told us the week leading up to Senior Day that he had been granted a waiver to compete again with the Buffaloes in 2026. Don't know if the WWE stuff would get in the way of that, but he does indeed have the ability to come back to play another season at CU.

Yesterday, it was revealed that Smalls medically retired. Scary stuff. I wish him well in his future endeavors. He was a good Buff doing everything asked of him, sometimes the body just does not cooperate. Get well.

Glad he caught it before more permanent damage could occur. Wishing him health and happiness in the future.

Also, **** The Sporting News for a click-bait headline that suggests Coach Prime and CU are culpable.

“Ex-Deion Sanders five-star Sav’ell Smalls: Playing at Colorado nearly left me paralyzed”
