Before a relatively long 1-1/2 in-season week break between games (assume so the student-athletes can have more time for finals, papers, etc.), #7 ranked women's basketball (6-1) has 3 games over the next 8 days. 1st off is a game tomorrow (Tuesday) evening hosting the Boston University Terriers (BU; 5-1), followed by a short road trip down to Colorado Springs to face the Air Force Falcons (AFA; 4-3) this Saturday afternoon, and ending with another home game, also on a Tuesday (12/4), but ths time in the morning, against the UT- Arlington Mavericks (UTA; 1-5).

Both of the home games are scheduled to be available on a free live CU-provided stream, while the Air Force game will be viewable on a Mountain West Network stream. (More detail and links available near the bottom of this thread.)

Note- Not that they necessarily mean much if anything, but in the last NET Rankngs I can find for last season (dated 4/2/23), the Buffs ended up at #20, while BUi was #117, AFA #179 and UTA #176 .

Go Buffs!!!

No. 7 Colorado Returns to the CU Events Center

Buffs take on the BU Terriers on Tuesday

BOULDER – The No. 7 Colorado Buffaloes return to action at the CU Events Center, hosting Boston University on Tuesday (6 p.m. MT). It will be just CU's third home contest of the young season.

Colorado (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday to No. 10 NC State. The Buffs went 2-1 overall last week at the Paradise Jam Classic, playing Cincinnati, Kentucky and NC State in three consecutive days.

The loss to NC State dropped CU four spots in the rankings, going from No. 3 to No. 7. It is the third straight week CU has been in the top 10, marking the most consecutive weeks since spending five weeks inside the top 10 from Nov. 27 – Dec. 18, 1995.

"When you look at the schedule, we've played five Power 5 teams, six if you count SMU [going to the ACC next season] in our seven games," head coach JR Payne explained. "We've only had two home games. All of that is a tremendous challenge in three weeks. Perhaps [voters] looked at that and recognized that it's been a real tough stretch. We're excited to remain in the top 10. We mostly just want to play great basketball, improve from what we did last time out and play better."

The Buffs didn't lose consecutive games last season until the middle of February, going 5-1 after a loss. Colorado's only back-to-back losses came on the road at No. 18 Arizona and then a double-overtime loss to No. 3 Stanford.

It's another quick turnaround for CU, who traveled back from St. Thomas all day on Sunday and practiced on Monday.

"In some sense [the quick turnaround] is awful," Payne continued. "We traveled 13 hours and now everybody is tired and it's back into another prep mode. On the flip side, it's great because we have an opportunity to see how quickly we can regroup and get back on the floor and execute again."

The Buffs struggled in the finale of the Paradise Jam Classic, totaling the lowest scoring output of the season with 60 points. Colorado averaged 86.5 points per game and shot 56.6% in the two wins at the tournament. But CU made only 20 field goals on 61 attempts against the Wolfpack.

"I think we've had so many games and so much travel that we've had very little to actually practice," Payne added. "So much of the last three weeks has been about prep and preparing for one game and then the next and not enough time focusing on our overall discipline and keeping things where they need to be for us."

Boston U (5-1) has been in Colorado since the weekend, opening the trip with a 63-52 win at Northern Colorado on Sunday. Tuesday will be the second meeting between the two schools. CU won the first meeting 94-56 back on Dec. 1, 1990, in Providence, R.I.

Tuesday's game will be streamed online at CUBuffs.com/WatchWBB. It can also be heard on AM 630 locally, across the Colorado Radio Network and on the Varsity App.

On paper BU looks to be a solid opponent, although not a top tier Pac 12 caliber team. They have more size than most non-P5 teams so it will be interesting to see how Vonleh and Miller are defended. BU comes off a win this weekend at No Colorado.

The other story line is how the Buffs bounce back from the loss to NCSU and the 13 hour return from Paradise.

A wierd game with some strange whistles and non-whistles, and the BU zone, when they run it, has sometimes looked to keep the Buffs from doing some of their favorite things. Thankfully Formann already has 3 3's, and made 3 free throws another time when she was fouled beyond arc. CU defense staying strong (12 BU turnovers so far), and the Buffs lead 35-27 at the half.
(CU also seems to be using the bench more and deeper than they sometimes do, with both Sherrod and Miller only showing 11 minutes played so far.)

We definately have a game.

BU took the lead at a couple points, but the Buffs, I believe somewhat energized/ angered by some stupifying calls against them, get a little lead back (54-51) heading into the 4th

Was at the game - for much of the time it looked liked the Buffs were going through the motions on offense and were not able to get the ball into the low block. This led to a lot of missed perimeter shots - when Frida wasn't hitting. What kept BU's lead from getting larger was thee volume of shots CU was able to take due to numerous Terrier turnovers. CU scored 27 points off of 27 BU turnovers.

What really turned the game around was getting the ball into Vonleh while Frida was draining treys which began late int eeh third quarter and continued through mmuch of thee fourth. This combo completely blew BU out of the game. CU won the fourth quarter 30-4! CU ended up with 42 points in the paint to 18 for BU.

Buffs have to decide to play before the 4th quarter or there will not be many wins in the conference season.

Congratulations to Frida on hitting the 1000 points in a season mark.

Congratulations to Jaylyn on passing Shelley Sheetz for 4th in all time assists. She has two more people to pass: Bridget Turner and Kennedy Leonard. She knew exactly who in the radio interview. I have a feeling she will be number one by seasons' end and Kennedy's dad with want an asterisk by her name because she played 5 seasons.

Jaylyn and Frida are money at the free throw line and I'm enjoying that. Jay at the line used to be an adventure.

Looks to me that BU will have a shot at making the NCAA tourney via the Patriot Conference tourney. They have some talented players and more size than many mid-major programs. This was a better match up for the Buffs than what I thought when the schedule came out.

It took too long for the Buffs to figure out how to get the ball into the low block (and thus high % shots). What worked, beginning in the third quarter , was when a guard would dribble from the wing towards the lane and the CU post player would have a defender on her back. Every time this happened it was two points.

Clearly BU's zone was designed to limit the Buffs touches in the paint. Early in the game CU was able to get a lead when Frida was hitting from deep. When she wasn't able to hit CU was in trouble.

Down the road (Pac 12 play, because there won't be any more challenges in the non-con games) it will be helpful for some others to be consistently hitting from the perimeter. Last night players not named Frida went 3-15 from deep.

Colorado’s Late Surge Secures Win Over Boston

Frida Formann surpasses 1,000 career points for the Buffs
By: Colin Wagner, CU Athletic Communications Associate
BOULDER – No. 7 Colorado took down the Boston Terriers in an 85-55 bounce-back win behind an incredibly strong fourth quarter Tuesday night inside the CU Events Center.

The Buffaloes (7-1) outscored Boston (5-2) by 26 points (30-4) in the final quarter and had scoring runs of 16 and 13 to put the Terriers away. Boston took the lead multiple times in the third, however, Colorado's aggressive play to close out the game turned the tide and helped the Buffs secure the victory.

"They didn't guard us any differently in the fourth quarter, we just made a decision that we were going to be more aggressive and got the ball inside more effectively," head coachJR Paynesaid after the win. "Also just on the perimeter, penetrating, collapsing and moving the defense a little bit made all the difference in the world."

Frida Formann had a night to remember as she became the 34 Buff to surpass 1,000 career points while also passing former Buff, Kate Fagan for the sixth most made 3-pointers in Colorado history with 201. Tonight, she led the team with 22 points, cashing in on five 3s and adding six steals on the defensive end.

"It feels really great," Formann commented on reaching 1,000 points. "I think it's something that you obviously dream of, scoring a lot of points and contributing to the program. I'm really happy that I got to do that especially here at CU. It means a lot to me to have been here for these three and fourth years and do that."

Colorado's veteran core seemed to rally the troops late after finding themselves down by three points approaching the end of the third quarter. Aaronette Vonleh, Jaylyn Sherrod and Quay Miller all scored double-digit points to help put an end to Boston's comeback bid.

A big difference-maker tonight was Colorado's points off turnovers and steals. CU had 27 total points off turnovers, 18 of which came in the fourth quarter while also recording 18 steals, 12 of which came in the fourth quarter as well.

"We were turning them over, but we weren't reaping the reward for it," said Payne. "It's great when we can do it. It's even better when you can turn someone over and then score the ball out of that. We really trust ourselves defensively, we know that we can guard."

The Buffs forced the Terriers into 27 turnovers while committing just eight of their own in the game.

BU was led by Caitlin Weimar and her 16 points and 12 rebounds.

No. 7 Colorado will take a short trip to the Air Force Academy to play the Falcons on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. MT
...

KEY MOMENT
The Buffs outscored Boston 8-1 to finish the third quarter before scoring the first 16 points of the fourth to put the Terriers away. In all, it was a 24-1 run that propelled the Buffs to the victory. Vonleh had eight points in the run with Sherrod adding in six.

NOTES
Colorado is now 2-0 all-time against Boston…Jaylyn Sherrod passed Shelley Sheetz (514) for third-most assists in CU history with 516…Frida Formann passed Kate Fagan (197) for sixth-most 3-pointers made in CU history with 201…she also surpassed 1,000 career points for CU (now has 1,015)…Formann is now 18-18 at the free-throw line this season (5-5 tonight)...Sherrod extended her consecutive free-throw streak to 21 makes (4-4 tonight)...Boston U went 1-for-8 from the floor in the fourth quarter...The Buffs handed out 22 assists, marking the sixth game this season with 20+...CU has now scored 30 points in a quarter twice this season (Last, 30 in the 4th quarter vs Oklahoma State)...30 of CU's 42 points in the paint came in the second half.

UP NEXT
The Buffs will take on Air Force on the road on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. MT.

Since I've been watching the game, the Buffs have asserted their authority and lead 40-21 at the half. Extra impressive to me given it seemed that the majority playing for CU while I've been watching has been the bench. (The Falcons are a young team, and per the announcers already have one loss to a Pac team, a 20 pointer to Washington at a tourney.)

Good to see Smith, who per articles I read saw very limited playing time (believe 5-6 minutes total) on Tuesday due to illness, looks healthy to me today and already is showing 6 minutes played and has 7 points and 4 boards.

The Falcons made a little rally to cut the CU lead to 13 a time or two during the 3rd, but the Buffs get the lead back to 20 (56-36) heading into the final quarter. The young Falcons actually look pretty good to me, especially looking solid in their mid-range game, with multiple players looking to have solid shots.

was Sherrod and Vonley sick. They did not seem to have their usual energy today. I know Smith had the flu against BU and that is why she did not play much

Frida was awesome
Frida is 20 for 20 from the free throw line this season. We know who the go to player is when the opponent has to foul. Get the ball in Frida's hands and plan on her making them. Jaylyn is better at free throws this season, but I'd rather have Frida at the line.

Frida's defense is so much better than when she arrived. It doesn't seem like she should be a senior.

I listened to the radio broadcast while watching the stream. The CU radio team didn't mention illnesses, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Some school had to cancel their game with Arizona State today because they don't have enough healthy players. It's not the first team to do so this season.

There's definitely Covid, RSV, flu, etc. floating around and once it gets in the locker room, it seems it goes through the locker room.
