In what I assume must be considered the most important and challenging road swing in the (at minimum) post- Ceal Berry era, #8 Women's basketball (20-4 overall; 10-3 in conference) will be facing off against 3 ranked teams over the next ~1-1/2 weeks at their home courts in the final road games of the regular season. 1st off is a match-up this Friday against the #22 Utah Utes (18-7, 8-5). Following that the team heads to Tinseltown next weekend, 1st facing off against the #10 ranked USC Trojans (18-4, 8-4 ) next Friday (2/23) night. Then, the team plays a rare (nationally televised) game on Monday night versus the #9 ranked UCLA Bruins (19-4, 8-4).

The Utah and USC games are scheduled to be available on one or more Pac 12 Network channels, while the tilt with UCLA is slotted to be on ESPN2.. (More information and links available near the bottom of this post.)

Note- In the latest NET Rankings as I type this (for games played through 2/13/24, https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-basketball-net-rankings), CU is at #15, while the Utes are #6 , Trojans #16 and Bruins #7.

Go Buffs!!!

No. 8 Buffs Start Final Road Swing: Five Things to Know

Colorado and Utah set for a 6 p.m. MT tip on Friday

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

SALT LAKE CITY –
No. 8 Colorado starts its final road swing with a trip to No. 22 Utah on Friday (6 p.m. MT, Pac-12 Networks). The game is the first of three straight on the road for the Buffaloes.

Colorado (20-4, 10-3 Pac-12) moved dropped to No. 8 his week in the Associated Press rankings, following its split of the Oregon schools. CU has been in the rankings for 15 straight weeks and inside the top 10 for 14 consecutive polls.

Utah (18-7, 8-5 Pac-12) comes in at No. 22 in the AP poll this week, having won three of its last four contests. The lone loss was to then-No. 17 Oregon State. UU is 2-6 this season against ranked opponents.

Five things to know
  1. 20W – CU has 20 wins for the third consecutive season. It is the 21st time CU has reached 20 wins. It took the Buffs only 23 games to get to the 20-win mark, the earliest Colorado has hit 20 wins since starting 20-2 in 1994-95.
  2. Vs Ranked – Colorado is an even. 500 (4-4) this season against ranked opponents. Three of CU's ranked wins have been against top-10 teams (No. 1 LSU, No. 6 USC and No. 8 Stanford). With a win on Friday, CU will record its first road win over a ranked conference opponent since beating No. 24 Baylor (69-69) on Jan. 7, 2004.
  3. Running the Gauntlet Pt. 2 – Colorado will face four consecutive ranked opponents for the second time this season. The Buffaloes will have taken on No. 17 Oregon State, No. 22 Utah, No. 10 USC and No. 9 UCLA by the end of this stretch. CU went 2-2 in the last stretch that featured games against No. 8 Stanford, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 USC and No. 25 Oregon State.
  4. Award Lists – Jaylyn Sherrod continues to advance in the cut-downs for national awards with the latest being named to the Naismith Player Midseason Player of the Year Team. Sherrod has had five or more assists in nine games this season and is closing in on 600 career assists (582).
  5. Evenly Played – Colorado leads the all-time series over Utah, 22-21. A win on Friday would give CU its first two-game sweep over Utah since the 2014-15 season. CU is 6-12 on the road against the Utes but has won the last two games, including the 76-65 decision in Boulder to open the Pac-12 season back on Dec. 30.

Krista Blunk and Angela Taylor will have the call on the Pac-12 Network.

Cory Lopez and Hanna Halteman will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

And, the Buffzone / Brian Howell preview -

Three 3-point attempts to Ten 3-point attempts
The offense has no scheme to get Frida or Maddie open. Stale, very stale
Such a funk settling in on our teams

We can make a run in the PAC 12 tourney. I think we can win the championship there. But the end of the regular season is much like football where the second half of the season was just miserable and we went from ranked to unranked. This team will finish in 6th place in the pac. Bummer.

Awesome game. And a tough loss. But well fought by the buffs.

Not a big fan of the multiple fake injuries by Sherrod, but whatever.

The team is good and could make a serious run. Go Buffs!

Worked a fairly big girls game last night-Green Mountain at D'Evelyn. Crowd loud as hell......like better than any big boys environment I've been in Colorado. In the same year the CU women are a final four contender.

These ladies are having an impact at the high school level in this state.

Despite the disappointing ending sounds like they put together a hell of a comeback.

Rece Davis took a little jab at us on GameDay when they were showing the highlights and he dropped the line, "Dasia Young, she ain't hard to find!"

If this team expects to make a run in the Pac 12 Tourney or the Dance, they have to start playing when the ball is tipped off, not in the 4th quarter.

Lack of foul calls did not lose this game. The play by the team in the first 3 quarters lost the game.

They can be a good team but not if they don't play up to their capability until the 4th quarter.

Keep playing like this and they won't be hosting in the Dance.

When your opponent doesn’t miss and/or you do not rebound, you get no transition opportunities and thus no run out layups and no open chaos 3’s.

You have to make your opponent miss by challenging everything with just jumping at them, cause pump fakes in the womens game is deadly (we have not figured that out yet) then when they miss you rebound and then Sherrod needs to come flying into the front court and create chaos for layups or open shots for Maddie and Frida.

Not enough effort
Not enough rebounds with strong gathers
No open shots

Great comeback, but do that from the jump

Agreed. I feel like this team is good enough to win the pac 12 tourney. But they can’t just coast to victory. They need to want to win.

Yes there was a missed foul call at the end when Jaylyn got hit and out of the game, but if they had played the first 30 minutes, that probably would not have mattered.

No. 11 Buffs Closeout Road Slate: Five Things to Know

Colorado heads to LA for final Pac-12 road trip

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

LOS ANGELES –
No. 11 Colorado is headed to the Golden State for its final Pac-12 road trip. The Buffaloes will face another pair of ranked opponents, taking on No. 7 Southern California (Friday) and No. 12 UCLA (Monday).

Colorado (20-5, 10-4 Pac-12) fell out of the top 10 in the rankings for the first time since the preseason poll, after last Friday's one-point loss at Utah. The Buffs are 4-5 this season against AP-ranked opponents after suffering back-to-back losses to then No. 18 Oregon State and then No. 22 Utah.

USC (20-4, 10-4 Pac-12) moved up three spots to No. 7 this week and has the longest current winning streak in the Pac-12 at six games. The Trojans are 13-1 at the Galen Center this season, falling to only Washington back on Jan. 28.

UCLA (20-5, 9-5 Pac-12) split its series last weekend with the Oregon schools. The Bruins fell victim to Oregon State (79-77) before bouncing back with a 74-55 win at Oregon. UCLA will open this week with No. 18 Utah on Thursday night.

Five things to know
  1. Running the Gauntlet Pt. 2 – Colorado is in the middle of four consecutive games against ranked opponents. This stretch is the second time CU has played four straight-ranked teams this season. So far, the Buffaloes are 0-2 in the stretch with close losses to No. 17 Oregon State and. No. 22 Utah. CU went 2-2 in the last stretch that featured games against No. 8 Stanford, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 USC and No. 25 Oregon State.
  2. Two Down – Colorado has lost two straight games for the first time since Feb. 19 and Feb. 23, 2023 (at Arizona & at Stanford). CU hasn't lost three consecutive games since an 0-4 stretch from Jan. 14-23, 2022.
  3. National TV – Monday's game against UCLA will be on ESPN2, marking the Buffs' first regular season game on a mainstream ESPN network since playing at Kansas State on Feb. 8, 2004. The Buffs are 1-0 this season on national broadcasts, defeating No. 1 LSU to start the season on TNT.
  4. On Fire % – CU has shot 50.0% or better in 10 games this season. The Buffs hit an even 50.0% from the field in their loss at Utah. It snapped a streak of 34 straight wins when shooting 50.0% or better.
  5. Close Calls – The Buffs are 4-2 in games decided by five points or less since the start of the 2022-23 season. Colorado is 2-1 this season and had won four straight games decided by five points or less before its loss at Utah last Friday.

Ann Schatz and Tammy Blackburn will have Friday's call on the Pac-12 Network (8 p.m. MT). Beth Mowins and Stephanie White will be courtside for ESPN2 on Monday (7 p.m. MT).

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.
