RV (Receiving the 28th most votes in both major polls as of 12/18) Men's basketball (9-2) begin its last season in the Pac 12 by hosting the very solid Washington schools. 1st off is a Friday evening contest with the RV (Receiving a couple points in the AP poll) Washington Huskies (8-3) this Friday (12/29) evening, followed up by a noon game Sunday against the WSU Cougars (9-2).

Friday's game will be shown on ESPNU, while Sunday's is scheduled to be shown on multiple Pac 12 Network channels. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this post.)

Note- Not that they necessarily mean much if anything relatively early in the season, but in the NET Rankngs as I type this (for games through 12/22/23), the Buffs are at #34, while the Daugs are #60 and Cougars #45.

Go Buffs!!!

(Preview(s) not available as I type this.)

Really important games. Gotta sweep! Do not lose at home and do start conference play 2-0 and beat two good teams.
Washington's resume isn't bad. Rooney's piece today said they don't really have a bad loss, and I agree. Nevada and CSU are both NCAA tournament teams. They've got a win over Gonzaga.

How WSU is that high is weird to me. Really easy OOC with losses to the two biggest names on their schedule in Mississippi State and Santa Clara. We need to be 11-2 going to Arizona, and we need a split there.

Buffaloes Open Pac-12 Play Friday Against Washington

By: Troy Andre, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

Game 12 - Washington, Friday, Dec. 29, 2023
CU Events Center, Boulder, Colo.
Tip: 7:01 p.m. MT
TV: ESPNU (Eric Rothman, Mike O'Donnell)
Watch Online: WatchESPN
Radio: KOA 850 AM & 94.1 FM (Mark Johnson, Scott Wilke)
Satellite: Sirius XM 373 & SXM App (Pac12)
Listen Online: CUBuffs.com
Live Statistics: http://statb.us/b/483971

THE BUFFALOES: Colorado opens Pac-12 Conference play after finishing the nonconference portion of its schedule with a 9-2 record, its best after 11 games since hitting the same mark in 2019-20. The Buffaloes have won four straight and five of their last six.

Colorado is one of the top all-around shooting teams in the country, ranking in the top 10 nationally in all three percentage categories: overall field goal, 3-point and free throws. The Buffaloes lead the nation in overall shooting at 52.6 percent, rank seventh in 3-point percentage (.407) and eighth from the line (.789). Colorado is the only program in the nation ranked in the top 10 of all three categories (through games of Dec. 27). The Buffaloes lead the Pac-12 Conference in all three as well.

The offense has been rocking. Over the last six games the Buffaloes are averaging 89.5 points while shooting 56.1 percent from the floor.
...

ABOUT THE HUSKIES: Washington enters Pac-12 play at 8-3 overall and has won its last four including a 78-73 home win over Gonzaga on Dec. 9. This will be just the second true road contest for the Huskies, who defeated cross-town rival Seattle U., 100-99 in double-overtime on Dec. 17. Washington averages 83.0 points per game, ranking third in the Pac-12 right behind Colorado. Defensively, the Huskies give up 74.5 points per game, but have been stingy around the perimeter, holding opponents to just 29.2 percent from 3-point range.

Graduate senior Keion Brooks Jr. leads the Pac-12 in scoring at 20.1 points per game. He also tops the Huskies in rebounding (7.6 rpg) and free throws made and attempted (52-64, .813). Graduate senior guard Sahvir Wheeler leads the Pac-12 and ranks fifth in the nation in assists at 7.1 per game. Wheeler is also tied for the team lead in steals (12) and is second on the team in scoring at 15.6 per game. Forward Moses Wood averages 11.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while leading the Huskies in 3-pointers made with 23.

THE SERIES: This will be the 37th meeting between Colorado and Washington with the Huskies holding a 21-15 advantage. The Buffaloes snapped a three-game Washington winning streak in the series with a 74-68 win over the Huskies in the first round of the 2023 Pac-12 Tournament. Colorado has a 10-5 series lead in Boulder.

If TdS is out, we will have a tough road.
It would be great if Cody is ready.
Neither Rooney or Troy Andre, Associate Director/Athletic Communications, mention Cody's status for tonight, in their game previews. That can't be coincidence (unless they figure nobody cares - lol) Are they wanting to keep Wash guessing?

Key matchup is likely KJ against Wheeler - the #5 guy nationally in assists.

I honestly wonder if our local media ever watches a b-ball game w/ no buffs in it! Rooney saying yesterday that U-Dub still playing zone? Ridiculous. The big story of the year for them, is they are playing almost all man-to-man now. See article below, if u want to get a decent overview of them.

-love to hear Ruffin is practicing full-contact! Yes, we need Tristan & Cody healthy. But I’ll take RJ & Ruffin healthy-hopefully soon- too!

-Key maybe Lampkin, Dak & Diop’s D versus size of Wash/WashSt/Arizona this week? ASU rare year their D better than a horrible O. Utah just got Deivon Smith eligible: quick, open-court back-up point-who substantially raises their ceiling. We’ll need our depth later in PAC, as USC/UCLA & Oregon (if Ducks get healthy) look to get better later in season

-hate to say it, but we may be headed toward another year of WCC & Mountain West getting more NCAA bids than PAC. Most predicting 4 bids for PAC, but PAC’s weak non-con & beating up on each as the year goes on means more like 2-3 bids?

Unfair, on year with 1 of best Buffs teams. But chances for NCAA bids getting better for Buffs in Big12; used to get 8-9 bids. Big16? Maybe 10+? CU program in-line for regular 5th-8th place finish in Big-12.

Go Buffs! NOW! We just can’t wait Tad!

Interesting the biggest year for coach Hopkins job security wise and he leaves the zone. Also weird to see Syracuse left it behind too with Boeheim retiring. Not sure of many coaches who are tied to it at this point.

Zone is best at protecting the paint while forcing jumpers from the wings and corners. Modern offense is about getting clean 3pt looks from the wings and corners. Throw in that the matchup zone they ran isn't easy to teach & implement, which made for extra challenges in the portal era. Really, it's almost obsolete other than as a change of pace wrinkle to throw at a team.

Yeees, want to see how Lampkin, Diop & Dak jell in real Pac12 competition. Let’s also see a good start out the gate to build on.

Ugh we have so much potential this year, have a bad feeling injuries are going to limit that. Hopefully we're just getting them out of the way early.
