Ladies and gentlemen, the Prime effect

I'm willing to have been dead wrong on this.

I've stated many times that the 10pm eastern time slot is death to ratings, because 50% of the country lives in that time zone.

Well, a game that kicked off at 10:20pm and concluded at 2:30am is now the 5th most watched espn college game broadcast of all time.

If someone wants to pass the crow, I'll go get my knife and fork.

You're still mostly right. There's value in that time slot, but it usually only gets 1-2M viewers. Prime CU is an anomaly.

Sunday morning I received a text from a guy I worked with 8 years ago, and haven't heard from in a few years. He texted to say he stayed up to watch the game (currently lives in Chicago) and how awesome it is to watch CU. He is thinking about coming back to watch a game. He is a BYU alum, and wants to come to a non BYU game so he can cheer on CU (preferably against Utah).

Exactly. The kickoff could have been at midnight eastern and it still would have gotten over 8m viewers. Lol.

The real problem....is that with these types of numbers I feel trying to poach Prime just got alot more lucrative for alot of schools.

Estimated enrollment numbers for fall came out today. You won't see a true impact from Prime until next year, and even then it will be a loose correlation... but for anyone curious CU Boulder has enrollment above expectations:

Colorado has now played in three of the five most-watched games this season, with their week two matchup against Nebraska ranking fourth (8.73M) and their season opener against TCU placing fifth (7.26M). The only non-Colorado games in the top five are the aforementioned FSU-LSU in week one and Texas-Alabama on ESPN in week two (8.76M).

The most-watched Colorado game last season was their opener against TCU, a Friday night game that averaged 1.25 million on ESPN.

Might need to start a thread on O/U viewership for each game... The 330 ET slot this weekend has three great matchups

#19 Colorado at #10 Oregon - ABC
#15 Ole Miss at #13 Alabama - CBS
#22 UCLA at #11 Utah - FOX

I'd say Colorado/Oregon would get 10m+ but those other two games are going to steal viewers. I bet peak viewership for CU/Oregon is at like 13m though.

So now there are BYU fans pretending to be CU fans to bag on Utah? Can anyone be trusted?

I'm sorry for peeing on the parade, but while it has always been a valid concern, I'm sure even the most ardent anti-prime ADs are looking at these numbers with envy.
To my knowledge, CU is not making anything directly off these ratings. It is obviously amazing for exposure to recruits and corporate sponsorship opportunities, but the blue bloods get all the exposure and sponsorships they could ask for anyways and are all making $80m/year from their TV deal.

IMO, it's the TCU's of the world, that passed on Prime a couple years ago, who are kicking themselves right now (yes, I acknowledge TCU played in the natty last year, but they are quickly back to irrelevancy in the national conversation).

Understood. But as a fan base who has historically said, "we can't have nice things" can't we just have nice things? Can't we just be with this and appreciate it without qualifying it with all of our fears?

While they may not be making direct money off of tv ratings, I can't imagine the ADs of big blue bloods are not looking at TV rating numbers. It's how they pull in those big media contracts. When little ole CU is beating them in the raw numbers, I would be shocked if it wasn't a topic of discussion and that they are not envious of our sudden rise in national exposure.

We need to lock that **** down now.

Maybe it's just my personal concern being elevated, but damn, those numbers are juicy.

But again, the SEC and B1G are already making almost 3x what the Big 12 and ACC are making from their TV deals. Those conferences are already getting their ratings and therefore the big media contracts. I'm not sure Prime at Florida forces ESPN to rip up the SEC contract and give each school $100m.

Agreed, but it's also fair to acknowledge that this is absolutely shocking, even for the most ardent Prime believers. With shock, come irrational thought....that will wear off and we can just sit on our high horse and laugh at the rest of the country for being so much dumber then us over the last 12 months.

Isn't this higher than either of the first 2 games?

BTW can't stand that show, was just flipping past and caught my eye
