Las Vegas Bowl is ending MWC partnership after 2019

The San Diego taxpayers have already shown that they aren't interested in putting huge amounts of money into subsidizing a giant stadium. If the Holiday can't make do in Petco then it may be time to downgrade the bowl.

It isn't as if we don't have enough bowl games as it is. If the Holiday downgraded it would still be well ahead of some other games out there. They already ended the Poinsettia Bowl.
Very different situation between a private nfl owner and a public project like this one, and the chargers owner is one of the worst in sports so there was already a hatred there.

Spanos in SD was a bad owner but San Diego has also never been in love with sports teams. Even when the Chargers were good they weren't exactly a "tough" ticket, pro basketball failed multiple times (granted again the last time was a terrible owner,) the Padres have done alright but aren't supported like many other MLB teams. SDSU has trouble drawing.

As the demographics change soccer may eventually become a strong focal point but that will only be with a segment of the population.

Overall it is pretty clear that in general the city just isn't tied up enough in sports to get huge public support for stadiums or other facilities. A 35,000 seat building is a much more realistic fit for the city.

Obviously, the locals can do what they want. San Diego is the 8th most populated city in the country and growing fast. It's big enough to support a stadium of at least 50,000 through concerts and one-off sporting events, especially considering the weather and soccer conducive population.

New SDSU stadium is moving along...should be done in time for the 2022 season.

They mention "expandable" several times but never mention expandable to what...?

Does anyone know?

Based on the basic bowl design, I'm sure you can expand in the future with additional construction; or do they mean expandable for bigger events (like the Holiday Bowl)?
50,000

It seats 35,000 for college football. It can be downsized to 25,000 for professional soccer. It can be expanded to 55,000 or more if the NFL wants to return.
