Leavitt to FSU (or not - UO backs up a Brinks truck)

IMG_1250.JPG

Oregon: After a report earlier today from Oregon reporter Steve Mims that Jim Leavitt would follow Willie Taggart to Florida State, Justin Hopkins of Scoop Duck tweets that Leavitt prefers to stay at Oregon. Leavitt himself tweeted earlier today: “Always been honest. Never have I mislead. Have great passion for the Ducks! Want to be a HC someday again Lord willing. Flying back tomorrow but tonight with my girls.”

While vindictive, this feels pretty good from the CU side. They've had more than a fair share of success in Eugene, so I love a little schadenfreude.

I understand it was not without justification on the field or in terms of recruiting, but they canned Helfrich two years after playing in the title game with a Heisman winning QB. He was an Oregon native at his dream job. He was part of the larger Brooks to Belotti to Kelly foundation that they had nurtured for DECADES. The foundation that had taken them from doormat to consideration to conference contender to title contender. His staff was full of Oregon lifers.

They decided that foundation and culture needed to be changed, and that they wanted to play bit time coaching musical chairs. When you do that, and hire mercenary coaches with no ties to your school, sometimes you get burnt. Occasionally, like in this case, you get burnt spectacularly.

Taggart and Leavitt leaving UO probably ultimately hurts the Pac-12- though we need to see who they hire now- but it feels so good given their petulant fanbase full of people whose only affiliation with UO is that they bought a hideous sweatshirt with the logo on it.

They all became Washington fans last year......

Even if Leavitt was offered the UO job, he still should leave for the FSU DC job anyway. Him and Taggart at FSU will bring in a ton of talent. They should win some ACC titles if not NCs.

Dux fans’ social media accounts are melting down. That is crazy how they’re in full sad panic mode.

I personally think the Oregon job is better than FSU; but, it is not better for Willie Taggart (and Jim Leavitt). It’ll be interesting to see who Oregon hires.

Hahaha. Oh the schadenfreude feels so good. Got what they deserved for stealing Leavitt. If they hadn’t, Taggart probably wouldn’t have had a good enough season for FSU to offer

All the money in the world couldn’t keep Taggart at Oregon. Sorry Phil.

Suppose HCMM leaves after next season, do we hire Leavitt as the next HC knowing that he's probably going to be in Boulder for a short time given his age? Then Chev takes over as the HC in that case. Things can change quickly in that timeframe but it's obvious that CU needs some big time recruiters...CU's location in the country compared to their Pac-12 peers is an advantage that CU needs to exploit.

In your situation Leavitt may last longer in Boulder than a younger guy might. He is still energetic and motivated and in good health.

Hire a guy in his 40s who comes in, gives us a few good years, and heads of to a perennial power that can pay a lot more. A guy like Leavitt may only have one more good rebuild in him and in a couple years be old enough that the big money schools wouldn't want to come after him.

We saw this with McCartney. By the time CU was a power his age kept him out of the attention of higher budget programs. Saw the same thing with Lubbick in Fort Collins. Had he been 10 years younger with his success some big school would have made it impossible for him to not move.
