In the last week of action before conference play begins next Thursday (9/21), VOLLEYBALL (6-2) continues its recent pattern of hosting and visiting the CSU Rams (5-4) on back to back days (Thursday and Friday evening this season), followed by a Sunday afternoon match vs. the DU Pioneers (0-6).

Not that last season means much of anything anymore, but just to maybe get a ROUGH idea on the competition, CU ended up #44 in the last RPI rating in 2022, while CSU was #55 and DU #105 .

Looks like both matches hosted by the Buffs are scheduled to be shown on the Pac 12 Mountain channel, while Friday's match at CSU should be viewable via a free live stream on the Mountain West Network website. (More info and links provided near the end of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

(As I type this, no cubuffs.com preview is available.)

Preview for this week's matches - https://cubuffs.com/news/2023/9/12/volleyball-buffs-prepare-for-golden-spike-showdown.aspx

BOULDER – The Colorado Women's Volleyball team (6-2) faces Colorado State (5-4) this weekend in the fourth annual home-and-home series in the Battle for the Golden Spike this Thursday and Friday. They will then be back home Sunday afternoon to take on Denver.

The Buffaloes will host the Rams Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the CU Events Center with a "Buffs Wear Black" them. Friday, CU heads to Fort Collins the to determine who will take home the Golden Spike Trophy. Friday night's match will also begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday's match will have a 2 p.m. start time.

The Golden Spike, which was donated by Colorado Volleyball supporter club members, is a vintage spike donated by the Comanche Crossing Museum in Strasburg, Colo., where the final spike was driven to connect the first continuous chain of train tracks from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Since the trophy's beginning in 2019, the Buffs and Rams have each won three matches. However, CU has won the Golden Spike three times by earning an edge since they won the latest match last season in Boulder.
...

Colorado is 6-3 against CSU under Mahoney, including a 2-2 mark in Moby Arena. Mahoney was the first in-state coach to defeat CSU coach Tom Hilbert in Moby back in 2017.

Thursday's game will air on the Pac-12 Network while Sunday's match will appear on Colorado's Live Stream.

COLORADO STATE

The Rams head into this weekend with a 5-4 record, most recently taking down Pacific in four sets at home. They've surrendered losses to three-ranked teams in Stanford, Baylor and Arkansas, and also fell to in-state opponent Northern Colorado. CSU currently has three players over the century mark in kills: Annie Sullivan, Malaya Jones, and Kennedy Stanford.

CU hasn't fared well against their in-state rival, holding a record of 17-26 in the 43 total matches. They do hold a winning record at home at 11-9, but are 6-17 when playing in Fort Collins. The Buffs are 6-4 in the last ten matches between the two.

DENVER

The Pioneers are searching for their first win on the young season, as they currently sit with an 0-6 record. They will compete tonight against Idaho State before heading to Boulder to take on the Buffs.

Colorado rides a 10-match winning streak over Denver, after losing the first-ever match between the two way back in 1986. CU took care of business last year, taking down the Pioneers in a close five-set match.

A ticket offer for this and next Thursday's matches (with the later being the conference opener vs. Utah) -

And, request for fans to wear black tomorrow -

Match day! (Nice to see they're using some promotion to try and attract some more student fans tonight.)

26-24. Going to 5. Serving in bounds continues to be a problem. Skyy Howard is such an electric player to watch! Tight match in Boulder.

C'mon Buffs! I can't believe I'm missing this one! I had a late client and didn't make it down. This is on me.

really disappointing. up 2-0 at home and lose. Is Kuel hurt. I noticed she did not seem to do much in the match and Panye was in

Kuehl got hurt in the first set. Was taken from the court for a while and played very little after that. We need Alexia.

Moby is such a tough place to win. I will be watching. Go Buffs!

thanks. I was wondering about AK. Moby is rough and I have very little expectation after last night but hope they pull it out. It would be a huge win imo

Looks like we dropped the first two sets and are leading 11-7 in the third. Would love to repay the reverse sweep, but I'm not optimistic.

Way to go Buffs! Love the composure of this team. Losing at home after a 2-0 lead and being down 2-0 in Fr Collins, it clearly shows how tough this team is. Awesome win!

Way to go Buffs! This Golden Spike series stays even, down to sets won! Props to CSU for how tough they schedule in non-con. They continue to be a very strong program, even with the new head coach. It's good for our program to have another high quality program so close but playing in a different conference.

Speaking of conference, in PAC 12 news, Washington State beat Texas 3-1 in Austin today...HUGE win for the Cougs. Conference play is going to be exciting to watch this year. GO CU!! Beat Denver!

REVERSE SWEEP! HOLY ****! RIGHT BACK ATCHA, CSU!
Nice win. Got a random volleyball recruiting question. I'm a high school referee-and I worked a Mountain Vista match last week. Came away really impressed with their junior captain-Bridget Malone. Daughter of Michael.

Any word on CU recruiting her?

Colorado Claims Golden Spike, Reverse Sweep CSU

BOULDER – The Colorado Women's Volleyball team (7-3) won a thriller in five sets (17-25, 20-25, 25-19, 28-26,15-13) against the Colorado State Rams (6-6) Friday night in Fort Collins, and will take possession of the Golden Spike Trophy for the third-straight year.

The Buffs answer back with a reverse sweep of their own on the road and stun the Rams in a full five sets. CU's first win in Fort Collins since 2021.

Setter Taylor Simpson recorded her second double-double of the season with 54 assists and 12 digs. Her 54 assists shatters her previous career-high of 47. Maya Tabron notched her third double-double of the season and second of the week, with 12 kills and 12 digs. Lexi Hadrych led the way for Colorado in kills with 17.
Five different Buffs had double-digit kills on the night, including freshmen Lily Dwinell and Cayla Payne both earning career-highs in kills. Dwinell had 11 kills on 26 attempts (.423) and Payne with 11 kills on 17 attempts (.647).

Skyy Howard continues her torrid run as a Buff in the 2023 campaign, contributing 12 kills with a .579 hit percentage and 5 blocks.

"Excited to keep the Golden Spike another year in Boulder! A very well played match from an offensive standpoint by both teams," stated head coach Jesse Mahoney. "CSU always packs Moby for this match but once we got past the initial shock of the crowd and the environment I thought we did a great job of getting better each set. We really needed production from the middle and right side tonight and we got that from Skyy, Cayla and Lily."

Despite the loss, CSU outside hitter Malaya Jones broke her career-high that she set last night in Boulder (21) with 23 kills in front of the home crowd.

The Buffs will be back in action on Sunday at home, when they take on the Denver Pioneers at 2 p.m. MT.
