VOLLEYBALL (Last season 20-11 overall; 12-8 in conference play) opens up its 2023 season by playing 3 teams this weekend as the host of the Buffs Invitational. The season starts with what could be a stout challenge from UNLV (26-5, 17-1; the defending MWC champion who is also picked to finish there this season), followed by by a Saturday evening match vs. the Campbell Lady Camels (19-11, 14-2), and ends up with a Sunday noon match against the North Texas Mean Green (16-15, 9-5).

(In non-counting scrimmages/ matches last week, looks like the Runnin' Rebels defeated Northern Arizona 3-0. Campbell isn't showing having played anyone, while North Texas swept Oral Roberts.)

Not that last season means much of anything anymore, but just to maybe get a ROUGH idea on the competition, CU ended up #44 in the last RPI rating in 2022, while UNLV was #24, Campbell #203 and North Texas #114 . (If the opponents have seasons near or better than last season, this looks like a very solid way to start the season as to building up the RPI for the year given all 3 teams win-loss records.)

All the Buff matches are scheduled to be shown on a free live CU provided stream. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post. As some one who has been bummed when non-home tourney matches haven't been shown in prior years (when some schools DO show ALL matches) when they don't involve the host school, hope CU starts streaming all matches, even if they don't involve the Buffs, in the future.)

Go Buffs!!!

BOULDER –
The Colorado Women's Volleyball team will kick off the 2023 season this Friday against UNLV at 7 p.m. in the CU Events Center for the Buffs Invitational.

CU, entering its eighth season with Head Coach Jesse Mahoney at the helm, will square off against UNLV, Campbell, and North Texas over the course of the weekend. The match against Campbell will be on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. followed up with another match on Sunday at noon against North Texas.

The Buffaloes are coming off a very successful 2022 season where they reached the 20-win plateau, the second time coach Mahoney has done so in his tenure with Colorado. Mahoney has an impressive 30-2 record (.938) in home non-conference matches and hasn't lost a home opener since the 2018 season. Colorado has also won nine straight matches in the Buff Invitational and will look to continue that streak against the Rebels this Friday.

OPPONENT OVERVIEW

UNLV
The Rebels are coming off a stellar year, earning 26 wins en route to a regular season Mountain West title. Their top two scorers, Isabel Martin and Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, return for their senior years and look to lead the charge for UNLV. There is just one matchup all-time between the Rebels and the Buffs, dating all the way back to 2011 when CU won in three sets to one.

Campbell
The Camels enter the 2023 season after earning 19 wins and a 14-2 conference record the year prior. They welcome back their top five scorers, who all logged 200 or more kills in 30 matches last year. Campbell has squared off against Colorado just once in program history, when CU won with a sweep at the CU Events Center in 2019.

North Texas
The Mean Green will enter the Buffs Invitational after ending last season just above .500 (16-15). UNT's top scorer from the 2022 season, Treyuanna Rush, will once again suit up for North Texas along with Sh'Diamond Holly, who led the team with 153 blocks last year. They went 0-2 against Pac-12 schools, dropping six of seven sets total.

About 9 hours until the season opener!
(Hope the crowd is good, especially with tonight's match vs. UNLV possibly being one of if not THE the biggest challenges of the non-conference schedule.)

The match is beginning, with the lineups just announced.

If I caught it right, the 1st CU starting lineup is:

OH - Hadrych, Tabron
MB - Howard, Kuehl
S - Simpson
RS - Dwinnell
L - Riddle

UNLV ties it up 1-1 after a 23-25 2nd set. (Buffs battled back from a 15-20 deficit to tie it at 22, but UNLV earns the win late.)

After a strong 4-0 start to the 3rd set, pretty much nothing goes right for the Buffs and they're now down 1 sets to 2 after a 14-25 3rd.

Buffs hang pretty tough through the halfway point of set 4, but then give up a crushing ~6 point run that puts them way down, and UNLV closes out the match with a 25-18 4th set win.

UNLV looked like a very good team, while CU looks like a work in progress that may still see quite a few lineup experiments, along with just getting more used to playing together in pressure-filled matches. Hope the Buffs learn some productive things from tonight, and come back strong tomorrow and Sunday.

Yikes. Bad start to the season. Isabel Martin hit lights out tonight for UNLV (.658, 28 K), but CU seemed flustered and out of sync the entire match. Serving and passing need MAJOR work. I hope they bounce back tomorrow and Sunday.

yeah, the serve/pass gone was awful for CU. They have to be better. So many errors and soft serves. UNLV was great in the serve/pass game and always seemed to be in the flow of their offense. It seemed the freshman opposites got an education as they got cooked. If the ball control does not get better than it will be a real bad year. Credit to UNLV but CU was not good tonight and it was a lost opportunity as the student section was full. Now getting them back will be tough

Still pissed about that game. I do have to give credit to UNLV they played well and beat CU. They had 2 ladies hit over .600 and CU had trouble. Tabron only had 3 kills and hit in the negative numbers. Have to give credit to the student leaders. I do not know if they had a competition with CSU to get more students to the game but the official attendance was over 4800. 90% of that number was students. Just a wasted opportunity with how CU played . The crowd reminded ov the big 8 days when Nebraska came in. It has been a while since I seen that many for a volleyball game.

Tough way to start the season. But it’s the first game and a chance to use this as motivation to put the pieces together and win. I liked what coach prime said about the fans not just wanting to win but to dominate in football. We all want that for CU volleyball too. And it’s possible for this team. I believe this team can surprise the PAC 12 this year. We’ve now invested in football. What does our volleyball program need to become dominant? Mahoney loves the buffs and is a CU grad. He’s done a great job. To me, sure seems we have the right coach in place. Soccer has new lights at Prentup. How about volleyball? Let’s figure out what support is needed and make it happen.

There are many NCAA volleyball programs, including several in the (future) Big 12 Conference, that have a dedicated venue for their sport. There is no way in hell that something like that is even on the radar of our AD, unless a donor writes a huge check specifically for volleyball. I don't know that facilities are an issue here, really. I like Coach Mahoney, and I want him to succeed here, but this game against UNLV was very frustrating to watch.

This team has many very talented, skilled players and a decent amount of experience on the court. Like I said, passing was a huge problem tonight. Serving was not good. Maya had a rough evening at the net. Of course, the Rebels are a great team and deserve credit, but our players should have been able to get some sort of rhythm going on their home court in front of the big student section that showed up. Conference play will be a blood bath if they don't get things cleaned up in the next few weeks.

I remain hopeful! Go Buffs!!

When CU added the practice courts, there was supposed to be a dedicated volleyball court for fans, but CU ran out of money for volleyball.

Facilities are an issue at CU. Back in the olden days, Nebraska was the first place I knew of that had the dedicated volleyball venue.

Playing in a place like Coors doesn't give the Buffs the advantage of having fans right on the court making noise.

The announcer made it sound like the student section had so many kids because it was one of their orientation activities to teach them the Fight Song and cheers to get ready for football.

While the team didn't play well last night, Jesse and the program are not getting the support from the AD that it needs.

I hope this team gets it's act together quickly or it will be a long, long season.

Wanted to mention that it was overall a TOUGH start to the season for the Pac 12, as the conference went 6-9 yesterday.

(Stealing Borrowing from a Volleytalk forum thread (https://volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/94570/pac-12-2023?page=7), Pac 12 team results yesterday were:
"
Pac-12 after Day One: (6-9)
Stanford (1-0) W 3-0 vs U of Northern Colorado
Oregon (1-0) W 3-0 vs U of San Diego
WSU (1-0) W 3-0 vs Wright State
Cal (1-0) W 3-0 vs Army
ASU (1-0) W 3-0 vs FGCU
Washington (1-1) W 3-1 vs SEL, L 2-3 vs UTEP
UCLA (0-1) L 2-3 vs LSU
USC (0-1) L 1-3 vs Houston
Utah (0-1) L 1-3 vs UVU
Colorado (0-1) L 1-3 vs UNLV
Arizona (0-2) L 2-3 vs UNC, L 1-3 vs UC Davis
Oregon State (0-2) L 1-3 vs KENN, L 2-3 vs MTST
"
)

I will agree on resources not being great, but does CSU have better resources, they beat #10 Kentucky last night. Last night was not about resources, it was about not playing well. Yes it is one game but they had the same issues in the black vs gold game with the pass/serve game. I imagine their was something going on and that was why the students were there, but they only sang the fight song once and it was after most were gone after the 3rd set if I remember it correctly. Lexi had an awful day receiving the ball and a couple times JM took her out to put in somebody else because of her struggles. They have to be so much better in that area or else they will not compete in the pac 12. I have seen them live twice and it is an issue both times. I hope it gets better. To be honest, no program at CU has the support of facilities to even be in the top half of the pac 12 let alone other conferences such as the big 10 and SEC. Hope it can change, but CU has never had great resources

I'm honestly struggling to read the schedule over at cubuffs.com. When are we playing?

The match has just begun. Looks like largely the same starting lineup as last night.

The Buffs get the 1st set 25-20.

(Note that these early season tourneys can often be weird. I had thought the UNLV match would be by far the toughest of the weekend for CU. However, looking at live stats, North Texas, who tonight's opponent Campbell took to 5 sets yesterday, swept UNLV earlier today, so the Buffs had better not take tonight or tomorrow's match for granted.)

Colorado goes up 2-0 after a 25-11 2nd set.

(Nice to see as a Buff fan that after a tough night (at least statistically) last night, Maya Tabron is back to leading the Buffs, as she has 9 kills while hitting .533, and also has 2 aces.)

BOULDER - Colorado women's volleyball showed up to play against Campbell with a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-11, 25-22) here Saturday evening, earning its first win of the 2023 season on day two of the Buffs Invitational.

After a tough match against UNLV yesterday, the Buffaloes (1-1) bounced back tonight with a victory over Campbell (0-2), holding the Camels to just a .076 hitting percentage throughout the match.

Maya Tabron and Lexi Hadrych had impressive offensive performances as they accounted for 23 of CU's 41 total kills. Tabron's 11 kills included three service aces while hitting a strong .474. She picked up seven digs and four blocks on the receiving end as well.

For the second straight match, middle blocker Skyy Howard led the team in blocks with nine total. Continuing on the defensive end, Lily Dwinell and Cayla Payne each had four blocks tonight.

Colorado will seek to hand North Texas its first loss of the season tomorrow at noon to close out the Buffs Invitational. The Mean Green will provide a good test for CU as they defeated Campbell in five sets yesterday and swept UNLV earlier today

QUOTES:

Head Coach Jesse Mahoney

Opening Statement
"Winning is fun, right? It's nice to get a good win under our belts after last night. I didn't feel like we passed particularly well last night. It was good to see us respond in our serve and pass today and in that match. We did a lot of really nice things and we held them to a low attacking percentage. We left some blocks on the table but still did a nice job there. This is the first opportunity we had to scout a team and then implement a little bit of gameplan, and I think we did a nice job there as well. We got some other players in and they played well. Avery Bolles won that second set for us at the start, which was exciting to see. Cayla got some opportunities as well. It was good to get some more people in today. Obviously tomorrow's match is going to be a tough one, and we have to get ready for that."

On North Texas
"They are good. They run a "6-2;" they're really balanced and a little undersized, but have really nice arms. They've got an opposite that we tried to recruit here. She's really really good. You saw what they did to UNLV today, they're going to be a test no doubt about it. I'm sure they're going to be up for that match, so we need to be up for it as well."

nice bounce back. did not see the first set or much of the second as I got the time wrong. From what I saw they passed better and good to see Myra get her groove back. The UNT sweep of UNLV surprised me. That will be an interesting match tomorrow. Just watched CSU lose to Stanford. Stanford is good and CSU does not look to be that big or formidable imo. They beat UK last night but I wonder if UK is a little over ranked.

I never heard of Campbell until UNCC played their inaugural football game against them. Anyway nice win for CU Women's Vollyball

So we beat the Flying Camels. I don't know if Campbell upped their game in Set 3 or CU's got worse, but we won.

North Texas is probably going to be a touch match the way they took it to UNLV yesterday.
