Official 2018 Fall Camp Thread

I think we can agree that those stats were padded with Miller and Worthington not playing along with vanilla defense and no hits on the QB.

What encourages me is that those are the type of stats I'd expect a top college QB to put up under those circumstances. Any time a guy is both over 10 yards per attempt and completing over 65% without throwing an INT he had himself a helluva day.
The D gave the O different looks in 7-7. The QBs didn't look as sharp in that environment vs. the scrimmage and that was without a rush coming at them.

Was Drake available two years ago?

Drake would not have even been considered two years ago. He was finishing his second year as the DL coach at Tulane after being a grad assistant. Before that he at the HS level.

I can guarantee though that Drake isn't the only guy out there who was able and willing to put more energy and more enthusiasm into the job than Jeffcoat was doing. I like Drake a lot but he isn't the only guy out there that would have been a major step up from what we were getting before.

I'm loving what I'm hearing, this is just about as good as could be expected. You know the db's are going to be pretty good I don't worry to much about that. I like that the Qb's and Wr's are winning I hope they are dominate all year. It sound like the linebackers are awesome and deep, and the Dline is probably going to be better. Dline is what it is there's 6 schools in the country that can recruit that position just not many of those guys to go around. Hope the scheme and tempo helps the Oline getting it out quick and throwing it a bunch should help. Rb's isn't going to be the same, it's tuff to replace the second best back in school history (imo). All kinds of koolaid going down over here

I think there's a real good chance that we see a lot of Lewis-Landman-Gamboa-Taylor as our starting/main 4 lineup on the second level.

I think it's reasonable to get to 7 with Moretti as a wildcard. If he's healthy, he's #8 and maybe even one of our best 2 or 3. I don't know how far away he is, though.
They need reps. Lots. And lots. And coaching.

So, Montez was 11-16 for 185 yards, 2 TD's and no picks. I thought he looked pretty good and those stats seem solid. But what does that mean in regards to QB rating? I googled QBR calculator and found this site. His results?

That would be better than Baker Mayfield's NCAA leading rating for last season, but in all honesty, we are hoping our defense is average. And they were missing 3-4 starters. And we will face many above average defenses over the season.

That being said, I do expect him to be a difference maker for us to start the season against CSU, kNowledge U, UNH, and UCLA, based on what I saw today. The comments about him making his progressions, no longer doing that foolish blind side circle under pressure and instead stepping up, and improved touch are all true.
Teams will take away that slant eventually. Gotta have another go-to play or two.

That's what we said about Jerry Rice for about 20 years. :sneaky:
Yes, CU’s WRs are just like Jerry.

I did really like the skinny slant off the weak side RPO. Except Bish about ripped the ball out of Montez’s hands.

Hey hey. only 9 days in. Don’t give up Jon stealing some time.
:D

I'm expecting it. My thought is that the depth at ILB allows Lewis to pretty much play OLB in order to get our best 11 on the field. Then we see the strength of our depth from there with Jon, Akil and Chase all playing meaningful snaps on the inside.

Also, I'm thinking about the beginning of the season. Most years, the young talent continues to rise as the season goes on. I'd bet on that happening in 2018.

Others that have not been mentioned that stood out to me:
Derrion Rakestraw - kid has closing speed and brings the wood. He got a lot of run out there today at Safety. The rumors of his demise are greatly exaggerated.
Hunter Vaughan - may develop into a serviceable backup to Haigler at RT. Maybe not this year but the potential is there. Can't really say that about some of the other backup OLs.
Donovan Lee - made some nice decisions. I like him better than Evans or Fontenot at #2 RB. He had a fumble though(caused by Rakestraw channeling Laguda).
Kanan Ray is yoked. Too bad he is hurt. I'm guessing that he'd be in the 2 - deep on the inside immediately.
Daniel Arias - got out there for a couple plays and looks like he belongs. BIG,
Dante Wigley - made a couple nice plays and showed good coverage skills.
Carson Wells - is an effective pass rush specialist. IDK why he didn't play during scrimmage. Callier either. Probably didn't want to rattle Montez.

The offense looked good but you have to remember that the D was missing 4 starters. Worthington, Miller, Mustafa and Mulumba did not play. Countered by the fact that Jaymac and Winfree did not play and LaViska played sparingly.

I will echo everyone else by saying that Antwine and Lang are the future and the future is now. Javier and Tui should be on a very short leash at NT. Montez, McMillian and the WRs look good. Tyler Lytle ran some option plays and it will be really fun when he takes over. The emergence of Landman at ILB permits Lewis to move to OLB, bookended by Davion, which makes our D better. And I love the "experiment" of moving Kaiser inside to LG and playing Sherman at LT. That just may be a winner.

Amazing what happens when you have a good QB coach.

It's interesting you mention the fade to the back pylon out of the slot. I seem to remember that Sefo was money with that throw, and used to do it with DD Goodson and Devin Ross quite a bit
haha. DD "iron hands" Goodson.
I'm not sure if you watched CU football in the Kordell Steward - Michael Westbrook - Charles Johnson era...but the holy ****ing **** the pylon fade. It was absolutely UNSTOPPABLE. Get CU inside the 10 and it was auto-6.

Forcing his way onto the field.

Sounds like the 3 young guys doing that are Jackson, Landman and Antwine. Possibly Hypolite joining that mix of guys you just have to play even though there are good upperclassman players at the position.
That's the best way to do it man. You want some run, go ****ing take it.

2016 Utah vs Colorado is on the Pac 12 Networks Football in 60 from 11-12 MT today (in 15 minutes) for anyone wanting to remember when CU was pretty good.

Edit - same game replays from 7-8 MT this evening.
