Official CU Head Coach Search Thread - Primetime

If you’re worried about Sanford securing the job for next year, remember that we’re only half way through the season and this team is still very bad. This game will be a distant memory by the time we run the gauntlet of Oregon, USC, UW, and Utah to end the year.
Oooorrrrr…

I think I can somehow get more excited about any name being tossed around than I was about KD. I'd be hard pressed to come across another candidate that would underwhelm as much as KD did
I can think of a certain guy that's been floated who has a predilection for sharks that might fit the bill.

Also, thank ****ing Christ that no one has mentioned a certain in-state candidate in several pages.

Talking coaching trees. Grimes is from the Bronco tree (though he has bounced around a lot, so not sure which coach to attribute him to). Two of my top three (Herman, Bronco, and Grimes) are from sameish tree.

New coach announcement date over/under. December 10th.
Really depends on if they swing and miss on a couple candidates. Best guess is that they don’t hit in their first choice, possibly their second, and end up with a plan B type with a mid-December announcement. I’ll take the over, but would be pleasantly surprised if they land their first choice and hit the under.

I’d hope the weekend of the 3rd. That would allow at least a chance of salvaging a recruiting class. The early signing period is tough on teams going through a change. But I suppose the portal does provide an out. And given our bottom heavy class, maybe hitting the portal is a better option. Transfer issues aside.

I didn't have time to read through 39 pages of suggestions but mine is Deion Sanders....I know that's not realistic but that dude can recruit. Guys would want to come play for him.

and with Deion comes a very pugnacious attitude about most things. I don't want a guy who can't take criticsm from another coach in his league and then in response wear a shirt that advertises that conflict. Dude, you gotta be above that.

If he matures a bit, I may be interested. I don't think he will mature though.

Meh. “Mature” is overrated. We need results in recruiting and on the field. Whether or not a competitor coach likes him is irrelevant.

Deion thought it was relevant if he put that much time into his response. He is a guy that has to get the last word in- no matter the cost. Mel Tucker or Mike Sanford for that matter would have just shaken the opposing coach's hand and moved on.

(this is NOT an endorsement of Mel or Mike)

Why is another opposing coach liking DS after a game relevant? DS would kill it recruiting and bring a ton of publicity to CU football.

It isn't relevant. It was Deion's actions afterward that I am forming my opinion of him. I don't like what he did and to me, that is not how a head coach behaves.

I’m trying to decide what is out of bounds here.

Lots of coaches have personal squabbles with other coaches. Some have much bigger issues.

Examples off the top of my head:

Tom Herman (and his wife) got into it with former Ohio State coaches. Nick Saban had a kerfuffle with Jimbo last year over recruiting that made news. Steve Spurrier was notorious for getting under the skin of opposing coaches, especially Fulmer. Jimmy Johnson was a total dick to other coaches too. And then there is the behavior of Meyer (gal pal bar grinding), Freeze (escorts), Petrino (mistresses) to also consider. Doesn’t seem to impact them in getting second or third jobs.

Deion Sanders is a really smart guy. People who have coached him or played with him frequently speak of his intelligence and that the “Neon Deion” nickname, which he hates by the way, is really inaccurate.

Sanders isn’t coming to CU, though, so the discussion is moot.

You’re still an optimistic fan. No logic changes that!

Meh. Most think that RG's last by-the-book FB coach search went relatively well by landing Midnight Mel. It's not illogical to expect that he will do the same this time. Yes, all the contract f*ck-ups that you mention are true . . . but also irrelevant if a good coach is hired.

As for whether RG's hiring of KD has made it more difficult to attract suitable candidates, I have no insight.

I think we need some Spurrier classics:

On fire at Auburn football dorm that destroyed 20 books — “But the real tragedy was that 15 hadn’t been colored yet.”

On playing Georgia early — “I don’t know. I sort of always liked playing them that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended.”

Jabbing Florida State — “You know what FSU stands for, don’t you? Free Shoes University.”

A shot at Tennessee — “You can’t spell Citrus without U-T.”

And another —”In Knoxville they’re still doing cartwheels because they went 7-6 and won a bowl.”

Poking Peyton — “I know why Peyton came back for his senior year. He wanted to be a three-time star of the Citrus Bowl.”

A shot at Alabama — “In 12 years at Florida, I don’t think we ever signed a kid from the state of Alabama … Of course, we found out later that the scholarships they were giving out at Alabama were worth a whole lot more than ours.”

WTF is that all about? Is it the thing about how black folks talk differently among themselves than when around white folks which Deion is trying to address?

I sort of get that.

But if it's about your language and demeanor in a professional setting should be the same as in a personal setting, then Deion is completely out to lunch. If it's this, I worry that he's never had a real job, has no point of reference, and is giving young people horrible advice about keeping it real & being yourself at work.

He seems like an arrogant dick.
He's the HC at an HBCU that has been trying to get the most talented black players to forego the current elite CFB system, dominated by white coaches and administrators. I'm sure it struck a nerve having a conversation with another black man and then listening to him change the way he speaks, presumably to sound more acceptable to a broader audience.

I do agree with you that it was a dick move, though
