Today starts the last Pac 12 Championships of the school year for any Buff sport, as the multi-event athletes (male decathletes and women heptathletes) compete today and tomorrow in Corvallis to kick off the Pac 12 Track and Field (T&F) Championships. Then, next Saturday and Sunday, all the other events will be competed in Eugene. Today's action starts at noon PT, or 1:00 MT, while tomorrow starts at 10:30 PT, or 11:30 MT.

Various links I could find so far-

(Buffs have 2 of 8 athletes entered overall in the decathlon and 4 of 14 entered in the heptathlon. Overall, the Buffs are a relatively young squad, as the men competing are a sophomore and a junior, while the women's representatives are a freshman, sophomore and two juniors.)

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Colorado sophomore Isaiah Oliver is sitting in first place with 4,006 points in the decathlon after breaking two Colorado records, one that he owned already, on his way to a great first day here at the Pac-12 Combined Event Championships at the Whyte Track and Field Center.

Sitting in sixth place after the first round of events with 3,524 is Colorado junior Andrew Ghizzonerounding out the men for Colorado.

As for the women's heptathlon sophomore Maja Wichhart-Donzo is leading the Buffs sitting in seventh place with 3,099 points. Junior Michaela Wenning sits twelfth with 2,819 points, fellow junior Mariah Slack is right behind her at thirteenth with 2,733 and freshman Drianna Mustin rounds out the Buff women sitting fourteenth with 2,675 points.

...
"

Go get'um Buffs. Finish strong tomorrow!

Isaiah Oliver just keeps getting better and better. Love seeing peak performances at the championships.

When you throw football into the mix, Oliver isnt a decathlete. He's an undecathlete.

Congrats to the Buff multi-event athletes for a solid start to the Championships, with 3 finishing "in the points", sophomore Isaiah Oliver and junior Andrew Ghizzone going 4-5 on the men's side (good for 9 points), while sophomore Maja Wichhart-Donzo finishes 8th (1 point) for the women. (Edit- the 9 decathlon points by the men is their best ever finish in the Pac, surpassing the 6 earned in 2012.)

Also, big congrats to Isaiah Oliver for a new career best! And, both the other Buffs who also competed last season showed big improvement in Pac 12 competition, with Mr. Ghizzone's points going from 6,724 to 6,925, while Ms. Wichhart-Donzo has gone from 4,793 to 5,083.
____________________________________________________________________________

Here are just some nerdy and I'm sure uninformed notes and stats I find interesting just looking at the numbers regarding Mr. Oliver. (Smart readers will skip this section.)

As was noted in the cubuffs article (http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2017/4/...u-decathlon-score-in-40-years.aspx?path=track) the last time he competed in the decathlon less than a month ago, Mr. Oliver's 7,331 points then was a CU BEST over the last 40+ years and placed him 3rd overall in Buff decathlon history. With his improved 7,394 points this time around, he's getting closer and closer to those top 2 which, per the record book (http://static.cubuffs.com/custompages/track/mens_outdoor_records.pdf), are 7,645 points for Mike Hill in 1976 and 7,470 points by Mike Wedman in 1972.

As Coach Wetmore is quoted below, Mr. Oliver is 23rd right now (https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/1912.html#39) in NCAA qualifying, but with a few top conference championships still to come, it might (???) be hard for him to keep a top 24 National position which is required to qualify for the NCAA Championships. A few points-
  • Assume athletes themselves probably don't think this way but, as a fan, a bummer that it seems like this is an up-year overall for NCAA decathlon scoring. In the 3 most-recent prior years, which were pretty consistent, his point total would have safely qualified him. Per queries in the tfrrs.org webpage linked to above, the 24th place points in those years, and where Mr. Oliver's 7,394 points would have placed him, were - last year (7,339, 22nd), 2015 (7,337, 18th), and 2014 (7,344, 21st.).
  • Of course, I'm sure Mr. Oliver himself, as a fierce competitor, just wishes HE'D done a little better in one or more other events (when thinking of NCAA's anyways), and doesn't care about prior year totals of other athletes. As with his prior competitions, his current weakest event, the pole vault (PV), is where he lost a lot of ground to his competitors. In this meet, he earned 562 points in the PV vs. 819 for the 2 winners (one of whom was his teammate Mr. Ghizzone- congrats to him!), and everyone in the top 5 in the event earned at least 760 points.
  • Where Mr. Oliver has definitely improved a LOT already, and should also be a continued area for points growth in future years, is in the 3 decathlon throwing events (shot put, discus and javelin). Last season, he totaled 1,593 points in those 3 disciplines at Pac 12's, and finished in the bottom half in each compared to his fellow Pac 12 competitors. This season he earned 1,830, a great 240 point improvement, while finishing from 2nd to 4th relative to the rest of the Pac field.
  • Overall, he improved his Pac 12 score by 442 points this year vs. last, so obviously is improving pretty much "across the board" in all the disciplines. I'm sure as he improves in the vault, along with of course all the other 9 events, he should be a Pac 12 favorite in his junior and senior years!

Buffs End Decathlon With A Pair Of Top Five Finishes At The Pac-12 Combined Event Championships

CORVALLIS, Ore. – After beginning the day in first place, Colorado sophomore Isaiah Oliver slipped ever so slightly, finishing fourth with 7,394 points, but Oliver wasn't alone in the top five as a strong finish from junior Andrew Ghizzone gave him a fifth-place finish with 6,925 points to give Colorado's track and field team two top five finishes in the 2017 Pac-12 Combined Event Championships.

On the women's side sophomore Maja Wichhart-Donzo lead the way for the Buffs finishing with 5,083 points good enough for an eighth-place finish. Junior Mariah Slack came in twelfth with 4,568 points, freshman Drianna Mustin finished thirteenth with 4,420 points while junior Michaela Wenning rounded out the day for the Buff women accumulating 3,937 points to finish fourteenth.

...

Quoteworthy: (CU Head Coach Mark Wetmore): "Isaiah had a good weekend. Some big personal bests and a 60-point improvement on his score, which moves him from 25th to 23rd nationally. 24 are invited to the NC's. There are some conferences still to go next weekend. We will keep our fingers crossed. Andrew had his highest finish at a Pac-12 meet. Those two have our men off to a decent start. The women struggled a little bit this weekend, but Maja worked hard and got us a team point. Many of them will be back helping next weekend."

Up Next: The Buff track and field team returns to action next weekend in Eugene, Oregon for the second weekend of the Pac-12 Championships where the individual champions will be crowned. The action starts on May 13 and continues the next day on May 14. The Pac-12 Networks will carry Sunday's (May 14) action live starting at 4:00 p.m. MT.

Just noticed that entry lists, heat sheets and live results links are now available for the non-Multi event part of the Pac 12 Championships, which begin tomorrow, and they'll be added in a minute to the OP.

And the Championships, weekend 2, have begun.

Things overall going OK early. Highlights-

Note- For those who like me who like to compare results with last year's, final team results in 2016-
  • the women ended up 6th (of 12, highest finish ever for the Buffs ever in Pac 12 competition) with 66 points, while
  • the men earned 63 points, which placed them 7th (of 10*, matching 2015 for highest Pac 12 finish). (*Note- Utah and OSU only field women's teams.) EDIT- I was wrong with this, the men's highest Pac finish was 6th in 2013, when they scored 70 point.

1st great Buff finish of the Championships, as true freshmen Madie Boreman and Sage Hurta go 1-2 in the women's steeplechase!

Edit- just noticed the live results include weather, and looking like "classic" Oregon- "Overcast, 55.2F, Wind: 1.3mph from the SE, Humidity: 75%, Pressure: 30.05in"

Note- Added summary of how events are scored to OP.

Also, nice prelim results for the men in the 400M Hurdles, as 3 qualify for the finals. With only 8 total making the finals, believe that insures all 3 Buffs will earn some points, (assuming of course in the final they finish and don't commit some infraction that get them disqualified).

Also, looks like one (true freshman Eriana Henderson) of the female Buffs also makes the finals in her 400M hurdles prelim.

In the final races of the evening, the 10K's-
  • the men's race just finished, and looks like the Buffs get 3 points total with a 7-8 finish from junior Ryan Forsyth and sophomore Ethan Gonzales.
  • Women are now I assume on the track.

At the 7.2K mark, it's one Cal runner (Knights) and Buffs Morley and Clark constituting the lead pack ~6 seconds up on 4th, who leads a 2nd pack of 5 which also includes 2 Buffs (Nun and Kelly) in the hunt for good finishes and points.

Onto the final 800M, with Knights leading, but not gaining any gap on Morley or Clark.

Clark CRANKS the fastest lap of the race by far in the final 400M for a convincing 6+ second win over teammate Morley, who gets 2nd. Fellow Buffs Kelly and Morley get 5th and 6th. If I'm calculating correctly, A BIG 25 point earning race for the female Buffs. Look's like Clark's 33:23.92 is also the 2nd fastest ever for the Pac 12 championships.

Note- In the almost always dual purpose nature of track, especially in the distance races, assume part of the reason the Buffs took the pace out strong was, in addition for a win at Pac 12's, to gain some qualifying times for NCAA regionals. Looks like five Buffs (senior Vernon in addition to the 4 named above) will have gained or insured their qualifying with the good pace set in this race.

I love seeing we had 2 freshmen women go 1-2 in steeple. Dynasty looks like it will continue for a long time.

A few more things on yesterday.

As I'd mentioned in an earlier thread, the weather, based on the weather report provided in the live results, sounded very Oregon-like yesterday. However, I didn't know it was like the below tweet shows. Even more impressive Erin Clark was within ~3 seconds of breaking the Pac 12 Championships record in the 10K. (I guess being the steeple champ the last couple championships, she was at least used to her shoes being wet! Edit- And I would guess being a Eugene native didn't hurt either.)

Also, links to a couple Pac 12 short (<1 minute) highlight and interview videos, with Ms. Clark and steeple champ Madie Boreman-

And, Runnerspace has an ~2 minute interview with sophomore Dani Jones after her qualifying run in the 1500M run- http://www.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?event_id=20&do=videos&video_id=209426

Also, just noticed that Runnerspace has an ~2 minute interview from last weekend with Isaiah Oliver after his 4th place finish in the decathlon- http://www.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?event_id=20&do=videos&video_id=209072

"
EUGENE, Ore. – For the sixth straight year, the Pac-12 women's Steeplechase title goes to University of Colorado, as freshman Madison Boreman took home the event title here Saturday at the Pac-12 Championships.

The Colorado women put together a strong showing on the first day as the team placed first and second in both the Steeplechase as well as the 10,000 meters. The women are currently in first place after the first day of competition with 44 points. UCLA sits in second with 37 points.
...

UP NEXT: The championships conclude Sunday. Action starts at 1:45 p.m. with the men's discus. The Buffs are currently in first on the women's team race with 44 points, while the men are in 10th with 13 points.

QUOTABLE (Head Coach Mark Wetmore)
"Long, rainy, sort of difficult conditions, but turned out some good results for us. Men's 4x100 meters got a surprising opportunity to advance to the finals. It was a patched together team with a couple late withdrawals. They are through to the finals and hopefully can get us a few points. Happy with them."

"The hurdlers were great today. Burke [Bockman]has done a very good job with his hurdlers. Jaron [Thomas] is through in the final of the short hurdles. And Jaron, Trenton and Kodie with Eriana are all through in the 400 hurdles. There will be some points there tomorrow."

"The men's distance runners are not having their best Pac-12 but, a guy who has never done the steeplechase got us a point there with Zach [Perrin]. Two guys that have never done the 10,000 meters for us at this level got us a few points there to get us a little bit of a start there."

"Of course, a really big day for the women in the Steeplechase and the 10,000 meters. A whole bunch of points. The women are in the lead of the meet at the end of the first day. A whole lot of events to come tomorrow."

"Ben and Joe both advanced comfortably in the 1,500. They walked away from it in pretty good shape, so they are in the finals tomorrow. Same with Nick [Harris] a well-executed win of his heat in the 800 meters which he walked away from comfortable."

"I was hoping for about 55 points as a team at the end of the first day and the women are already at 44."
...
"

STRONG relatively-easy looking win for Dani Jones in the 1500M (looked to be helped by a couple potential main challengers falling in separate incidences).

Buffs get a point in the women's hammer with sophomore Elisa Grandemange getting 8th place in what looks to be a PR (56 meters) under the "big lights" of the conference championships.

Also, forgot to mention, but in the 1st race of the day, the men finished 8th in the 4X100M relay to earn a point.

In the men's discus, junior Grayson Webber finishes JUST outside the points in 9th in what looks to be a PR (50.85m).

The women get a couple more points, as 8th place heptathlete (last weekend) Maja Wichhart-Donzo comes back this weekend to earn a 7th place finish in the triple jump. (Video of her best jump below.)
