Older guys can feel free to speak up. I don't feel comfortable judging how good or bad teams were unless I saw them play. Sometimes the stats don't tell enough of the story.
That being said, I'm comfortable saying this team is the worst since the late 80s (obviously 89 was awesome, but that's just when I started paying attention to cu football).
hard to say for sure until the season is over, but, so far, i'd say this team is at least as bad as the worst CU football i've ever personally seen-- the 1980 Buffs.
i'm pretty sure that when this season is done, there will be little doubt that this is the worst CU team in at least 45 years. i wasn't around, but i think some of the post-grandelius teams in the early 60s were pretty atrocious too.
Rice had some really bad teams back in the 70's. KU and KSU were largely jokes from the late 70's through the early eighties. Cal and Oregon were equally bad for long stretchs in the 70's and 80's. Baylor was, well, Baylor for long stretches through the 70's and again in the early 90's. CU isn't that type of bottom feeder, yet. The above teams were no better than CU now, but maintained their level of ineptitude for years. CU has sunk to new lows under Embo, but they are, so far, short lived.
Oregon State had 29 consecutive losing seasons...and Northwestern had a ton too. Probably one of their teams during that stretch deserves honorable mention.
i actually think we're worse than a lot of those teams. this will be 7 years with no bowl game and no winning record, which a CU worst ever record. ku and ksu and the others were bad for longer periods of time, but they didn't get beaten as badly as CU is getting beaten this year, if i recall correctly. baylor at their low point may be close to equivalent. and, of course, any of the directional schools that moved up to d-1 were more putrid than CU has been this year. of traditionally power conference schools, i'd say we are probably in the bottom 10 of all time worst teams.
I was a freshman in 1983. Horrible team....but this is worse.
This is the worst CU team I have ever personally seen.
There have been some terrible D1 schools over the years, but I can't say off of the top of my head that there's any team that I could say definitively was worse. We've lost by 56, 55, 44, 34, and 27 points - with the potential to have more bad losses coming up. Add on to that a loss to an FCS team at home and a loss to one of the worst teams in FBS this year in CSU.
Hell, we've only been in 3 games this year - a win over a 2-win team, a loss to a 1-win team, and a loss to an FCS team.
Ugh. This is depressing.
One of the worst Buff teams I have ever seen. I remember some low days during the Fairbanks days but at least the could put up some points against first team defenses.
I remember when Randy Essington played and could throw for a lot of yards and some TD's.
When I look at this team I think early Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They just didn't belong in the NFL at first and the Buffs just don't belong on the field with other D-1 schools at this point. Too bad for Embree and crew because I think they care about Buff football they just don't seem to have the tools to succeed right now.
Their play this year has put my interest at an all time low and I've been a fan since the Cliff Branch days.
worst team I have ever witnessed. Much worse than either Baylor or KU in the late 90s and 00s. We are the cupcake of cupcakes.
Worst team I've ever witnessed, although I'm not exactly DBT age. The Duke teams of the past 15 years were MUCH more competitive than this in many games, even during 1 win seasons. We're far worse than Indiana, Ole Miss, Wake, Rutgers in virtually all of their down years. The degree to which we get hopelessly obliterated and crushed is something I haven't personally witnessed. Being 21-0 down 2 minutes into games, etc. WVU putting up 80 on Rutgers in '01 rings a bell, but even Rutgers won twice that year with other competitive games.
This is the worst CU team I have seen...there are some other really bad teams to compare, but I would say CU looks like a D-1aa team that just moved up to FBS.
I'm trying really hard to find a CU team that looked this bad. I'm not having any luck. As liver pointed out, maybe 1980. That was horrible, too. I think that was the year we lost to Oklahoma 82-42. But at least we put up 42 points.
Man, I don't know. I may be blinded by the desperation of the current set of circumstances, but I can't think of a CU squad in my lifetime that was worse than this.
Worst CU team I have ever seen but some of the Kansas State, Kansas, and Iowa State teams in the old big 8 were much worse. Same goes for some of the old teams at the bottom of the Big 10. Northwestern managed to lose 34 games in a row. Duke had two winless seasons and Washington was probably worse than us when they went 0-12.
I am only including teams from major conferences as well.
The worst I've ever seen and I was a student during the Fairbanks years. I was there for 82 -42, this **** has it backed waaaaay off the map.
Is there a chance this team will drop lower in the Sagarins this week?
This team is another level of horrible. It is terrible in all 3 phases of the game. I've never seen a team so consistently capable of being out of the game halfway through the first quarter. I think you really have to try to be that bad.
It's not as bad as you think.
a) The Ducks make everyone look horrible. (See the "So, do you guys hate the Ducks yet?" thread.)
b) The Buffs are not even close to the worst team in FBS this year. UMass, Southern Miss, and a number of other teams are much worse. I don't know what Sagarin says, but I've had a computer rankings system since 2001 and the Buffs are currently #107 out of #124. The following teams are ranked lower: CSU , Army, Buffalo, Idaho, Tulane, Wyoming, Eastern Michigan, UNLV, UTEP, New Mexico State, Florida International, Akron, Hawaii, UAB, Memphis, UMass, and Southern Miss. So far from "the worst."
c) The 2012 Buffs are not even close the worst Pac-10/12 team ever. As another poster mentioned, some of OSU's teams from 1971-1998 (aka "the dark days" or "the first 18 years I was alive plus 9 before that") were absolutely horrific. In recent years, I'd have to say Washington and Washington State in 2008 were way, WAY worse than the Buffs and quite possibly the worst Pac-10/12 teams ever. UW finished 0-12 that year. Wazzu was 2-11 but may have been even worse, with their only wins against Portland State and UW in the "Crapple Cup", lol. No, the Buffs really aren't THAT bad, in the grand scheme of things. In CU history, yes. But certainly not at the conference or division level.
Pretty funny that the only team in your ranking system that is "worse" than us that we played, beat us. Couldn't name which of those other teams listed that we'd beat, either.
My first memories of the team date to the JV Cain, Troy Archer, Charlie Davis teams, I was at the stadium when Drake beat a team with Jeff Knapple at QB that I thought would be pretty good. Time heals bad memories, so to say this team is worse then 0-10-1 might be a stretch. The topic alone is sickening, I was truly hoping as I turned 50 I would never be discussing this again. The men I watched as a young adult bring so much pride to the school I love, hell to an entire state are for the first time failing and that in itself saddens me. Jon Embree must decide if he is the leader of this team, this brotherhood we all share in, or are his friendships more important then the pride and tradition of The Colorado Golden Buffalos.
This team is young and unprepared....I would put this coaching staff as the worst since Chuck Fairbanks
Thanks for being so nice
We like our Hemlock over ice
The buffs just suck
It's our rotten luck
Now kick us in the face.
That same CSU team beat Hawaii last night. We wouldn't be Hawaii
I've only been following the Buffs since 1987, so this is easily the worst team I have seen on the field. It's so bad, I didn't even flinch when I looked up from my phone at the bar and saw the score was 56-0 with time to play still in the 1st half. I hung out a while longer to see if our backup QB would show any sparks (not really) - and then went home without really feeling bad about the game - I'm just numb to it all at this point.
Point a) Agree, the Ducks are talented, fast, and well coached and do make everyone look bad. What is different here is that they were rolling up points against the Buffs when Kelly was trying not to. They scored 70 when trying not to embarass Embree, what would it have looked like if they had been trying to score.
b) None of the teams you list are in a "major" or AQ conference, those are schools that get paid by other schools to get beat up. Even then with CSU winning and likely one or two others since I'm not going to check even that list will be getting shorter.
c) Small comfort here. I have seen worse major conference teams. The PAC teams you listed are likely and I know that in the old Big 8 days some of the teams that Kansas State, Kansas, and Iowa State were worse. Also we will never approach the level of putrid that Northwestern set in losing 34 straight. Problem is that we are not that level of program (or at least shouldn't be.) We aren't a perenial elite with 100,000 fans in the stadium every week but this is a school that has a NC, has multiple top 5, top 10, and many top 25 finishes. We don't have an excuse for how bad we are.
No other BCS conference schools below us....
We really are last....
We are currently 2nd to last in the nation in points differential. Here some other FBS schools for comparisons.
UT - San Antonio -5.4 ppg
Texas St -5.8 ppg
South Alabama -9.9 ppg
UMass -30.5 ppg
Colorado -27.9 ppg
and the other worse BCS schools...
Illinois -12.8 ppgKansas -12.8 ppgAuburn -13.5 ppgKentucky -14.2 ppg
This team is as bad if not worse than anything Fairbanks put on the field. There is not a game left on the schedule that you can look at and say CU should win.
We got lucky to get the one win we have and that is because Pirate Mike is a bad coach.
Ku played UT tough at home, losing by 4. I am pretty sure UT would lay a serious *** whooping on the Buffs.
Bohn knew what he was doing scheduling that upcoming series with UMass. That is quite possibly going to be the two worst teams in the history of college football facing off. Going to to be epic. 6,000 fans in Foxboro to see a 5-2 game.
Separate names with a comma.
