Never was clear to me if we are offering up to $1M in salary or if we budgeted $1M to make a change.... Firing Baer and an assistant or 3, and hiring a guy for about $600k is probably in the $1M range. Maybe Adam clarified this?
Are we having to buy out any departing assistants? Not sure we do.

Every assistant's contract runs to July 1, so a half year. Baer had a full year left, not sure about the July 1 thing for him.

Baer had to pay $200K if he left before 2015. I am guessing both sides came to an understanding and no money will change hands. No idea on assistants.

Solid article indeed. From Mac's quotes about taking the defense in a different direction, I really don't think there's any debate about why Baer "left".

Thots on Clune?

Hawaii's Defense ranked:

86th with 418 yards/game
94th with 245 passing yards/game
75th with 172 rush yards/game
67th with 26.8 pts/game

All are pretty drastic improvements from Hawaii's 2013 Defense of 495, 281, 213 and 38.8, respectively.

Has a decent resume prior to Hawaii, but nothing on the P5 level.

Coaches may view CU as toxic right now but that will change. I was really hoping for David Gibbs, but if he chooses texas tech, maybe we will get Clune. Or maybe Todd Orlando? Or maybe someone else really good. I

It does sound from what others have said on here that Gibbs is really difficult to work with. We definitely don't need that here. And while he was exciting as a potential option, there are still unanswered questions. If he wants to go to Lubbock, then you have to also wonder if he really smart enough to be our DC anyway. Lubbock vs Boulder? Choose Lubbock and you fail the smarts test in my opinion.

Manny Diaz is scheduled to make an average of $600k per year for his 3 year deal as DC for Miss St. Is CU really ready to make a $1 mm/year commitment to their DC? Something tells me no. If CU was really prepared to make a million dollar per year investment in a DC, they would almost seemingly have their pick of the litter, right? Unless coaches view the CU job as too toxic and career hindering that even that amount of money isn't worth it. The amount offered/accepted/declined by various candidates could be very telling about what coaches think of CU's program.

When I thought D Gibbs was coming I read something he said about not caring about yards given up. That it is a useless stat almost. If I recall he preferred to focus on takeaways (which of course he did quite well) and points allowed. That last stat you showed, regarding a 12 point drop in pts allowed year on year, is definitely something that peaks my curiosity.

If we gave up 12 points a game across the board this year (I know you can't exactly do that b/c it is an average and it wouldn't work out that way in the real world) we would have won 4 more games this year (i.e. bowling).

Thots on Clune?

I didn't watch Hawai'i much this year. Impressed me in its PAC-12 games to start the year, though. Especially since the offense gave them next to nothing. Recruiting connections on the islands is a positive.

Not my first choice, but not someone I have a bad reaction to.

I like Clune, and I was impressed with Hawaii defensively when they were here. In fact, he was the first name that popped into my head as a replacement when Baer left. The one thing that struck me about their d was the adjustments they made at halftime that day-correct me if I'm wrong, but they shut us out in the second half. That being said, he's not a guy I'd think we'd have to break the bank for, and his resume doesn't scream it, either.

Very positive on Klune. He seemed to make good adjustments at half for manyUH opponents.

Not only would he bring good Hawaiian contacts, but also add depth to the Buffs' current Utah contacts. Big Polynesian community in Utah!

On Klune. I remember talk centering around his second half adjustments and just looked at the box scores for their games vs. Oregon State, Washington and CU.

Just need Clune to teach our new punter how to get movement on his punts like Scott Harding did against us. That alone would help our defense immensely.

He makes $160K right now and actually would be coming from one of the few areas with a higher COL than Boulder.

And an area where things to do run out real fast---offspring was stationed in Hawaii for 120 days and was bored to tears after two weeks....... and he likes to surf, swim and scooter around.
